Slowly trudging into my room, I throw my bag on the bed and head to the bathroom. Today has been a long day, but the gods have shined on me because there was a gas leak at the school and they let us out early. I know it's not the best time to be happy, but you take what you can get these days.
In the bathroom mirror, I observe myself. I actually don't look that bad. When I woke up this morning I felt and looked like trash, but I guess I overreacted. In the middle of looking in the mirror my phone starts buzzing crazy in my back pocket.
It may be my Grandpa. Every time he goes grocery shopping he always forget what we need, so he'll call and make me walk around the house to see what we need. OR it could be Ida, sometimes the store will have busy days and she'll want me to come in.
"Hello?" I say into the phone.
[on the phone conversation]
L: Hey it's me Lyra
Q: Hey, did you lock yourself out of your house again because I don't feel l-
L: No, that's not why I called I need to know when your birthday is. And that only happened one time, I'm allowed to forget you know.
Q: I know that. Why do you need my birthday?
L: When you filled out the letter for the vet clinic you didn't put your date of birth.
Q: It's 5/25/2003. Why don't you know my birthday?
L: I bet you don't even know mines.
Q: It's on Christmas Day.
L: You only know that because it's a national holiday.
I let out a deep sigh and walk back into my room, "I really think you need to start listening to me more."
"Yeah, I do too. Oh my god you won't believe what happened to Rachel from the cheer team today." I can hear the excitement in her voice.
"Wait Rachel with the red hair?" There's a lot of Rachel's at St. Helena High.
"No, Rachel with the mole."
"On her face." There's also numerous Rachel's with moles.
"Stop interrupting me!" She says agitated.
"Sorry, tell me more."
"Rachel was seen kissing Reggie in the janitors closet right after they let us out from the gas leak."
"Who's Reggie?" Lyra lets out a groan.
"Damn it Quinn do you not know anything?" I just roll my eyes as she continues talking. I bent at the waist taking my shoes off and throwing them under my bed. Rising up, I let out a huge squeal by what I see from the side of my room.
"... then when they found them, they were totally starch naked I mean how embarrassing is that. I forgot the best part, Reggie wa-."
"Alexander." He looks in disarray, like he was having conflict or something. His hair was tousled, fist clenched and eyes narrow.
"No, I didn't say Alexander I said Reggie. Are you even listening?" I really wasn't.
"Ly, I got to go." Before she could object, I hang up the phone.
"Shouldn't you be a work?" It's 4:00, he usually doesn't get out of work until 6.
"I should be, but I'm not."
"Um ok, may I ask why?" I question while crossing my arms.
"This whole relationship has been a lie." He say's frantically shaking.
I laugh, "We've only been dating for like two weeks, we are still learning about each other. I reassure him. "It's alright that we don't know everything about each other. What? Do you have a birthmark in an embarrassing place? Nudes circling the web or something?"
"The web? Who the fuck says the- look this is no joking matter. You don't understand this is something you should've know, even when we were just friends."
"Ummm alright what is it?" I lean against my vanity mirror, the necklace is in my line of vision. I do my best and ignore it.
"I can't show you it here." He says panning his hands around my room.
"Show me?" What? Is this like a circus act or something? Did he bring an elephant?
"Ok Alex, you're starting to freak me out." I walk up to him cupping his face.
"Meet me in your backyard." His voice stern and void. He moves away from my touch, which he rarely ever does, this lets me know he's serious. What does he need to show me outside that he can't show me here?
"It's raining outside." I tell him pointing to the grumbling rain outside. Trees swish in the howling wind as a tsunami of rain beats on the house.
"Rain never hurt anyone." He responds shrugging it off.
"Alexander I'm not-." He swiftly cuts me off.
"Meet me outside right now." He says in a demanding voice, by the way he's looking at me, something inside is tells me not to object.
"Fine." I say silently avoiding his gaze. In what seemed like a flash, he jumped out of my window. Not he 'jumped-on-a-tree-and-then-landed-on-the-ground' he jumped out a window like a...superhero.
"OH MY GOD ALEXANDER!" I let out a huge squeal, panic starts to set in. Is he dead? Did I just witness a death, I'm too young. I pace around my room looking for my phone, something reflects off my wet window from the bed, my phone. The first number I come across is my grandfather's, my finger is just inches away from clicking the call button.
I can't call him, if I do, he'll know I was here with Alexander. I know in this situation I shouldn't be thinking about myself, but if he's dead I don't want to be dead too. I have to go outside and assess the situation myself. My grandpa taught me a few medicinal things, I can handle it.
The only shoes I can find are my rain boots. Putting them on quickly, I practically jump down the stairs to my backyard. Once I get there, I look below my balcony, I don't see a body. This is not making any sense; how could he survive that jump?
"Quinneth!" I hear Alexander scream my name. He stands in the middle of my backyard under the pouring rain, at this point were both going to get pneumonia. He has no scratches, bruises or broken bones. He's in.....perfect condition. Am I in an episode of black mirror?
"How did you- I don't understand what's going on here!" I scream at him, due to the rain being so loud.
"Just let me explain in a few minutes everything will add up." His curly hair is now straight and dripping wet. The rain clouds my vision, making it hard to see him. My hands wipe away the rain like windshield wipers.
"Fine, could you kind of hurry it up it's hailing out here." No, I'm not exaggerating, its actually hailing out here. One hits my shoulder while the other aims for my head. I wouldn't be surprised if I have a headache after this.
"I'll try! Quinneth from the moment I saw you at that party, I had to get to know you. What you like, don't like and your passions. First, I needed to see if you liked me, which you obviously do. As we kept hanging out the feelings, I had for you grew deeper, deeper than any other girl I've ever been with. With having those feelings for you, I want you to know every single dark secret about me. Whether it's good or bad you need to know the real me. I actually told you everything, well what I wanted you to know at the time." I can tell this is something he's been sitting on for a long time, festering up into this.
"Alexander, what are you trying to tell me! You're freaking me out." I start to walk up to him; he holds his hand up.
"Quinn stay right there; I don't want to hurt you." His jaw tightens, stance widens.
"Hurt me! You could never hurt me, Alexander." I ignore his wishes and keep walking, my rain boots squeak under me.
"STOP!" His voice dooms loudly, even over the rain I could hear him loud and clear. In fear of how he sounded I stop dead in my tracks. His head hangs low, it's looks like he's trying to control himself.
"Ale-." My sentence is cut short, his head lifts up, I gasp at what I see. His eyes change from jet-black with grey specs to golden yellow. It's the same color from the night when he beat up Myers. Under all this gloomy weather, he shines like the sun.
"Let me show you who I am, who I really am." He starts to take off his clothes and throws them to the side. In an instant he's stripped naked, when I say naked, I mean NAKED.
I shield my eyes away from him, "I know that at some point you and I would see each other... you know naked, but not in my backyard and not this soon in our relationship. My grandpa will be home soon and I don't want him-
"Quinneth just shut up." He says breathing heavy.
"Don't tell me t- AHHHH!" I move my hands from my eyes to see his bones start to break. His nose turns into a snout, canines start to grow in his mouth, feet shift to paws. I try to run away but I slip onto the ground. I roll over on my back,?the rain starts beating on my face and body. All of a sudden the cracking stops the only sound is hardcore rain. I shut my eyes in fear of what I would see.
Minutes go by and I hear nothing. With my eyes closed I feel a sense of someone or something looming over me. Heavy breathing is on my face, slight growling echos around. Opening my eyes slowly, I'm in awe of what I see. A pair of sun kissed yellow eyes looks over my face, taking in every nook and cranny. It's like looking into the sun, just less painful. The creature opens it's mouth flashing canine teeth. They are so sharp, it looking they could slice me in half. I must be dreaming, right?
From the shock, I mumble out one word, "We-we-werewolf."
The rain engulfs me as I stare straight into the wolfs eyes, well Alexander's eyes really. At this point I don't really care about being cold or wet, I'm trying to wrap my head around my boyfriend being a werewolf. How does this happen? Is this even humanly possible? Was there a mutation, like in X-men?
I slowly reached my hand up to his face, the wet fur passes through my fingers he leans in to my touch, "Wow, amazing." I whisper quietly. His eyes close. "So fucking cool." He snickers.
"Can you kind of back up, I can't move." I tell him. He backs up so I can lift myself up. He just stares at me while I readjust myself. Mud is all over my body, my curly hair hangs over my eyes. Walking up to him slowly I place my hand on his head. While doing that I take in his werewolf body. He's about 1 inch taller than me, in the movies wolves are always smaller, but he's huge. His midnight fur is matted to his body due to the rain and his eyes hang low.
"Alexander." I say his name gently. His eyes connect with mine, a gasp escapes my lips. "Would you mind, like, turning back into a human, I want to go inside." I point towards my house. He backs up from me, his paws turn into hands and feet while his snout turns into a human nose. Back in front of me is Alexander, let me specify a naked Alexander. I quickly shield my eyes for his... Participle.
"You ok?" He asked in a worried tone.
"No, I'm fine, wait no I'm not fine but I am coping. Come inside so I can get you some dried clothes." Not even waiting for him to follow me I rush into the house.
"Ok, so I only could find a pair of my grandpa's old cargo pants and my dad's old quarry shirt. This fine." I keep my eyes close as I feel my way into the kitchen.
"Quinn I'm over here." I turn my body to the sound of his voice. My hand touches a toned stomach. I feel the clothes leave my hands and his feet patter out of the kitchen. Slowly, I open my eyes to make sure he's really gone, he is.
In the meantime, I try to make conversation. "So. You're a lycanthrope?" I can hear him shifting around in the living room. I have so many questions to ask him, probably all won't be answered within the day.
"Well, that is the correct terminology, but we prefer to go by werewolf." I give myself a mental check, don't call him a lycanthrope instead go for werewolf.
"Werewolf, exactly." He comes into the kitchen, I let out a giggle. The cargo pants fit perfectly, but the shirt is stuck to his body. "I thought I got your shirt size down; you want me to go look for another shirt?" He shakes his head at me.
"No, it's like a second skin." He lets out a small squeak while trying to get comfortable. "By the look on your face I can tell you have.... questions."
"I do actually, um how is this possible?"
"Just in my genes I guess."
"I can't believe my boyfriends a werewolf, this is shocking but also kind of exciting." I say biting my nails.
"It's exciting for me too." He lets out a chuckle.
"It must be painful, shifting into a wolf all the time." On vampire diaries it looked painful for Tyler.
"When you first shift it hurts like hell, but as you do it more and more it's painless." I just nod my head. "You know, if you don't want to deal with this or me I under-."
"Why wouldn't I be ok with this?" I'm a bit angry right now.
"There's a lot of territory that goes along with me being a werewolf, you know that right? Also, I'm sorry that I didn't tell you earlier, you deserved to know sooner."
"Look, you don't have to apologize. I understand why you didn't tell me that you were a werewolf Alexander. This is a big secret, hell I wouldn't tell you if I was one." I let out a snicker. He slowly walks up to me.
"Quinneth Margarete Worthingshire are you a werewolf?" I roll my eyes at him. "I mean it would make sense look at all this hair." His fingers run through my thick curls, god his hands feel good on my scalp. "Is this fur?" I swat his hands away.
"Shut up!"
"Now you know you can't tell anyone what I am, right?" His eyes bore into mine.
"I won't." I reassure him.
"Not even Lyra, Quinn." I let out a deep sigh.
"Scout's honor." I hold up my fingers.
In the kitchen I hear a car door shut outside the house, my eyes widen. "Oh my god that's my grandpa."
"What's he doing here?"
"Umm he lives here. I forgot he was at the grocery store; thought he would be there longer, usually he is." Panic starts to set in, if he sees Alexander were both dead.
"I'll just go up to your room." He starts to walk to the stairs.
NO!" He stops in his tracks. "It's too late for that you'll have to hide in the broom closet."
"Why the broom closet? I don't want to hide in the closet." He says pouting.
"Do you want a dead girlfriend?" I asked lifting my brow. He lets out a groan and gets inside the closet. "Make sure you stay extra quiet."
"Got it." He whispers. Before the door shuts, he pulls me in for a kiss. I smack his arm.
"What the hell is wrong with you?! This is no time for a make out session." His lips quirks into a smile.
"It might be the last one I get." I slam the door on him and head on in the kitchen trying to act normal.
Leaning up against the counter I hear the front door shut. "Hey Quinneth." He sits the grocery bags on the counter. "Wait, shouldn't you be in school?"
"Yeah, uh there was gas leak at school." As he puts up the groceries, I see Alexander's wet clothes on the counter. God, I thought I put everything up. As he bends down to put up the cleaning supplies, I throw the clothes behind the couch.
"You alright?" He asked me, his eyes narrowing in on me.
"I'm fine, just making sure everything is in order."
"So, besides the gas leak how was your day?" He asked.
"Decent, did some math work and took a test."
"You pass?"
"92." I say proudly. He gives me a pat on the back.
"Good job honey I'm pr-." He stops mid-sentence, something drops in the broom closet. Damn it! I told him to be quiet.
"What was that?" He looks around.
"Nothing." Panic yet again set's in. "You sure you're not hearing things?"
"Are you calling me crazy?" His scrunches his face.
"No, I'm not calling you crazy, it's just your aging." I reassure him. He just gives me the 'shut-the-hell-up' look. I do just that, shut the hell up.
We hear some more movement in the closet, can his dude stay still.
"Ok I heard something. It's coming from the broom closet." He starts to walk over to it.
"I thought I heard it come from upstairs, let's go check upstairs shall we." I eagerly pull at his arm.
"Quinn let go of me." He tries to release his arm from my grip, before I'm able to stop him out stumbles Alexander along with the broom and mop. My grandpa's mouth hangs open as his eyes dart to me.
"Well, this is unexpected, never seen this guy in my life." I say awkwardly. They both look at me, knowing that I'm lying.
"You got me, I'm lying." I sigh. "Alexander meet my grandpa, grandpa meet Alexander... my boyfriend."
