Toni
It was a beautiful morning. Warm sunlight poured through the open curtains of my bedroom. I soaked up the warmth for a moment longer before forcing my stiff limbs out of bed. My arms reached for the ceiling, elbows cracking.
A nice cold shower would be perfect right about now. After, I'll make breakfast for Sawyer and I. Something tells me he'll be far more cheery and easy to deal with in the morning after he's had food. I wonder how he takes his coffee?
With a fresh pair of clothes in hand, I walked into the ensuite bathroom. Normally I liked to listen to music, specifically Ellie Goulding, but I didn't want to risk waking up Sawyer.
It took ten minutes to lather myseld in my rose soap, scrub my hair clean and rinse off. Another five minutes to blow dry my hair, and for the finishing touch, a final six minutes to do my makeup.
I looked at the neon clock by my bed before I left the room. Almost eight. Still plenty of time for breakfast. With a skip in my step, I walked down the hall to the kitchen slash living room. I almost didn't see the two bodies on the couch. Almost.
I noticed my best friend first, curled up in the corner, the blanket I usually kept over the back was tangled in her legs. Half of her face was hidden by a curtain of dark curls. Sawyer was next to her, his legs draped over the side of the couch, laying on his side facing away from Kaylee. He had one arm draped over his face, the other hugging the tv remote to his chest.
More than anything, I was surprised Kaylee let him have control over the remote last night. She slept over all of the time, that wasn't a surprise. I'm glad they seem to be getting along well. This whole ordeal with Sawyer will go more smoothly with Kaylee by my side. Sometimes I don't know what I'd do without her. I wish I could come clean, explain the situation with Sawyer. My father and his made it very clear that this had to remain a secret, no one else could know.
I knew Kaylee could keep a secret, she could keep this secret. But I didn't know if she would agree with my decision. Ultimately, her disapproval is what kept me from telling her the truth.
Shaking my head, I picked up the two empty beer bottles on the coffee table and discarded them into the trash. As quietly as I could, I started pulling out a pan, eggs, an onion and peppers. I didn't know about Sawyer, but Kaylee was a light sleeper. Whenever she slept over, all it took was me shifting in the bed to wake her up. Usually she fell right back asleep, but I still felt bad for waking her.
When the pan started to sizzle, I heard a groan from the living room. Kaylee's head peaked over the side of the couch a second later, her eyes droopy and narrowed.
"Is that food?"
"No, it's tarzan."
Her laugh was riddled with sleep, rich and deep. "Just the same, I'd eat him too."
I'd never be able to look at that movie the same way. Another one of my favorite childhood movies, ruined. Wrinkling my nose, I looked from the omelet to her. "Eww, Kay."
There was a devious spark in her eyes that chased away some of the drowsiness I'd seen a moment ago. She grabbed one of the small couch pillows and slammed it against Sawyer's face. "Wake up bitch, it's time for breakfast."
A strangled sound came from my own throat. Something between a cry of objection and a scream of horror.
"Fuck off."
I couldn't see him from this angle. I imagined him frowning right as a pillow went sailing at my best friend.
She laughed, tossing the pillow aside.
"Kaylee."
"Bite me."
She jumped up from the couch like she'd never been asleep. No stretching, no sluggish movements.
Sometimes I envied her ability to jump out of bed in the morning so effortlessly. Whereas it took me forever.
"There's leftover ham in the fridge, would you mind grabbing it for me?" I asked.
She nodded, walking around the island towards the fridge.
"Kaylee." I said again, this time with even more criticism.
"I'm getting really tired of you saying my name like that." She said with a deadpan expression. She grabbed the ham from the fridge, placed it on the counter and sauntered over to the other side of the island.
"You're not suppose to walk around in your underwear when guests are here." I said quietly.
Sawyer's arm shot out, wrapping around the back of the couch. He pulled himself into a sitting position. "I tried telling her the same thing."
Kaylee shrugged, sitting down on one of the three stools across from me. "The way I see it, he's not a guest. He's a resident now. Loophole."
I shook my head, laughing at her nonsense. "You're impossible."
"And you're--" she stopped, stared, narrowed her eyes. "What the fuck are you wearing?"
I pulled self consciously at my red dress. It was new. Normally Kay's insults regarding my wardrobe never bothered me. We had different taste. But that was before Sawyer and I started going out. Before I started appearing in magazines. Before he was sitting in my living room, watching us.
He stood up from the couch, reaching out sideways. He rolled his shoulders as he joined us in the kitchen. "I think she looks cute. Like little red riding hood."
My cheeks warmed at the compliment. He'd never complimented me before. He tried once, on our first date, to tell me I had a cute smile. It had sounded forced. Fake. This one sounded real, even if he was only saying to disagree with my best friend.
She snorted, giving me a once over. "Little red riding hood was eaten by a wolf. Case and point."
"I don't mind being the wolf in that analogy." Sawyer said mischievously. He walked around the island and wrapped his arms around me from behind.
My heart fluttered like a hummingbirds wings. He was flirting with me. His arms were strong and too big for my small frame, but they felt amazing. He was warm, and his chest pressed against my back was good too.
He pressed a wet kiss to my neck. Only one.
It was enough to turn me into a pile of goo. Enough to forget Kaylee was even in the room, at least until she spoke.
"Your love struck happiness sickens me to my very core."
He chuckled, the sound vibrating throughout my entire body. Then he pulled away, taking all of his warmth with him. "I think you're burning the omelet, Toni."
