I came into the living room to find Suki on the couch, shaking heavily with her face in her knees.
My lashes lowered and pulled the blanket off my arm—the one I grabbed only two minutes ago—and I draped it over her, feeling her stiffen when I sat on the couch beside her.
I just pulled her to my chest, running my fingers through her hair as I gently shushed her, rubbing her back to calm her down.
She just raised her head slightly, gazing up at me with her tear-stained cheeks.
“Oh, this won’t do,” I said then, lightly catching her face.
I just kissed the tears away, hearing her breath catch, but she didn’t fight me.
I just pulled away slightly and ran my thumbs under her eyes.
She gazed up at me, looking very numb.
I just smiled, tucking some hair behind her ear. “Come here.”
I then pulled her to my chest, and she buried her face in my shoulder as I ran my hand up and down her arm.
Her body shook slightly as I attempted to soothe her. “Is… is it time now?” she asked me.
I just gazed down at her, smile softening as I ran my finger along the scar on her stomach. “Later tonight. When it’s dark.”
She nodded, sniffling. “Okay.”
I continued to run my finger along her stomach, and she just gave into my embrace, letting me soothe her.
As she held onto me, my smile faded, and I just gazed down at her with lowered lashes.
“Are you scared?” I asked her.
She could clearly tell I was talking about the ending of the contract.
She was silent for a moment but nodded. “I’m just glad it’s you.”
I sighed and lowered my lips to her head.
Yes… I’m scared, too.
