The time had come. The contract was fulfilled.
I walked into Suki’s bedroom to find her lying on the mattress, staring off into space uneasily.
My smile was gone; it vanished the moment I came home.
Suki just gazed up from the bed. “Is it time?”
My lashes lowered and I nodded. “Yes, Angel.”
She let out a sigh and sat up on the bed, sniffling.
I just stepped over to her and gently scooped her up, holding her by her bottom as she gazed down at me, seeming numb.
“Where would you like to go?” I asked her then, eyes softening.
“The cemetery,” she whispered. “I want to die with my family.”
I just nodded and carried her out from the room.
She buried her face in my neck and wrapped her arms around me, and I let her.
The walk to the cemetery was horrific… my thoughts were spinning like a hurricane, and it didn’t help when I heard hers doing the same.
I just urged myself forward as she kept holding onto me… as if I was the one keeping her alive.
Almost ten minutes later, we entered the cemetery, and another two after that… her family’s graves.
I wish we were under different circumstances, I heard her think. I wish I could live with him forever.
“Are you afraid?” I asked her.
“A little,” she whispered.
I just ran my fingers through her hair. “I’ll put you to sleep first, I promise. You won’t feel a thing.”
She nodded.
We were both silent for a moment.
“Can I tell you something…?” she whispered solemnly.
“You can tell me anything,” I responded.
“I think I…” she trailed off, as if she was afraid to say it. “I think I’m in love with you.”
I closed my eyes tightly, trying to rid of the cold pain developing inside me.
“I’m going to die soon,” she said then, voice quiet. “So I thought you ought to know.”
After carrying her to a bench, I gently set her down onto it.
She let go of me and stared at my chest, still seeming entirely numb.
“There’s no need to be afraid,” I promised her, tipping her chin up. “I won’t hurt you.”
Her lashes lowered, and she nodded quietly.
I knelt in front of her and pulled a tube out from my jacket, and I popped it open, looking down at her. “Drink this, my Angel. It’ll put you to a peaceful sleep, okay?”
She parted her lips, and I pressed the rim of the tube to her mouth, tipping it into her throat.
She swallowed every last drop, but I finally pulled back when she finished.
Almost a second later, she fell forward.
I caught her limp body, knowing by her lack of muscle movement that she was asleep.
I scooped her back up to lay her down onto the bench, staring down at her face as she breathed softly.
Her expression was relaxed, her body loose… and she looked… calm now.
I just hovered over her, letting the tips of my hair drop onto her forehead as I leaned down to gently peck her lips. “You’ll be safe with me now. There’s no need to be afraid anymore.” I closed my eyes. “I love you, too, okay?”
I then hovered down to the nape of her neck, feeling my fangs tear from my lips when I leaned to bite.
I stopped.
I squeezed my eyes shut tightly, trying to reconcile myself.
Her blood smelled so good, sweet yet bitter… the scent intoxicating. I wanted it… I deserved it.
But… but I couldn’t.
I lowered my head.
I couldn’t do it.
I was daem… I had no emotions when it came to killing… so why with her? Why her? What about her made me so attached?
Despite the scent of her blood numbing me… I grew nauseous at the thought of biting her. I felt like it would’ve been a greater sin to murder her than all the other sins I’d committed.
I breathed shakily and opened my eyes, watching my sight blur as my tears dropped onto her forehead.
I just set my forehead on hers, closing my eyes tightly as I smiled. “What are you doing to me?”
I finally drew back and smiled, raising my wrist as I tore my fangs through my skin, and I drew back when blood bloomed from the wound.
I just leaned down and opened her mouth, tipping her head up… and pressing my wrist to her lips.
She choked a little at the taste, but I just smiled.
“Drink it,” I told her. “Don’t hesitate.”
After a moment, she relaxed against the bench, and I knew my blood entered her system.
I pulled back then, brushing her hair away from her face. “Now no one can kill you… my little Angel.”
No matter how hungry I was… I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t kill her.
I should’ve accepted the fact before I took her here.
I smiled then, tucking some hair away from her face. “I think it’s time to go home now.”
