I left Suki alone for a while after she fell asleep with me last night; there were some chores I had to get done, so I left briefly to do them.
I wouldn’t take long, but she was sound asleep, and I was bored… so maybe I’d find something to do until the morning.
As I pushed the laundry into the dryer, I finally started it, sighing as I stood back up and dusted off my hands.
But—suddenly—an ear-shattering scream burned through the house.
My head shot up in her direction, and I scanned the upstairs through the ceiling, looking through the halls for signs of life… but there was only her.
I then gazed back down at the laundry, and my lashes lowered. “This again, huh?”
I sighed and stepped out of the laundry room, going up the stairs seconds later before I made it to her bedroom.
Without knocking, I parted the wood, and I gazed down to immediately find her bed empty.
Not bothering to look around, I stepped over to the bed and knelt, peering under the frame.
And there she was, hiding under the bed, curled up and shivering.
“Angel,” I said then, making her glance up at me uneasily, “another nightmare?”
She just kept holding herself, burying her face in her knees.
My lashes lowered immediately, and I just set my weight on my knees and smiled gently. “There’s no need to be afraid,” I whispered then, holding out my hand. “I’m here now.”
She gazed up then, tears glistening in her eyes.
“No one can hurt you again,” I promised her. “I won’t let anyone touch you again. You’re safe now.”
She stared at me shakily. “I can’t get the images… out of my head.”
By reading her mind, I knew very well she was talking about the death of her family… as well as the events from when she was kidnapped.
Her cruel mind still kept her reliving it in her dreams.
“There’s no need to be afraid,” I said then, still holding my hand out to her. “No one can touch you again, I promise.”
“But…” she whispered then, “what do I do… if they get in my head?”
I smiled then, repeating the words I spoke to her while she was dreaming. “Remember this,” I told her, “if you are ever afraid, just call my name. I will be there to save you.”
She stared at me now with glistening eyes, whispering the words, “W… W….”
I smiled.
“Wi… Will,” she said then. “Will!”
“I’m right here,” I promised her, holding out my hand. “They can’t hurt you anymore.”
“Will….” She breathed uneasily before she reached out to me, and I smiled when she took my hand.
I helped her out then, lightly catching her arms as she crawled toward me.
When she made it out, she gazed up at me.
Suddenly, a flash burned through the window outside, and then a sudden thunder boomed through the entire neighborhood.
Suki cried out, covering her head as if the ceiling was about to cave.
I just chuckled, pulling her hands away as her entire body shook with fear.
She gazed up at me hazily, and I just cupped her cheek, lightly running a thumb under her eye.
“There’s nothing to be afraid of,” I said then, smiling. “I’m right here.”
I then pulled her to my chest, wrapping my arms around her.
She shook in my grip, hands latching onto my shirt.
Come on… I thought, gently running my hand up and down her back. Give into me. I know you can. Give in, Angel.
She immediately buried her face in my neck, holding onto me tightly.
My lashes lowered as I smiled, feeling my eyes glow a bright red.
Good girl.
Her breath shook as she fisted my shirt in her hands, and she burrowed her head into the crook of my neck, hiding her face.
“You don’t have to be afraid anymore,” I promised her. “They cannot hurt you anymore. I will protect you forever… and ever.”
No one can hurt you again.
If they attempt…
I will KILL them.
