I smiled down at Suki when she parted her lashes later that morning, and she did, seeming genuinely exhausted as she gazed up at me.
“Hello, there,” I said then, smirking. “Sleep well?”
She never responded, just watched me lazily.
“I bet you did,” I said then. “It’s eleven o’clock. I knew you were tired.”
She just closed her eyes again, making my lips part.
But she suddenly coughed, and I blinked at the action.
She gazed up at me then, looking even more exhausted.
Her nose was runny, too—she was sniffling—her eyes were all teary, and her color of her face was shifted… something was wrong.
My brows drew together. “Are you alright?”
She coughed again, but this time a small wheeze slipped through, making me sit up immediately.
I gazed down at her, concerned. “Suki, are you okay?”
She just sniffled and shook her head.
“What happened?” I said then.
“I don’t feel good…” she said quietly. “My heart hurts, so does my muscles, and my stomach hurts, too.”
I just helped her lay on her back, and she coughed a third time when I pressed the back of my hand to her forehead.
“You’re burning up…” I said quietly, brushing her bangs back in place. “It must be an illness of some sort.”
It would make sense… she never slept; she was out in the cold for a while which made her immune system weaken. I made her exercise…
Yes, this was probably a cold or a flu.
I stood then and walked over to the fridge, leaning down to pull a water bottle out.
When I made it back to her, I set it on her forehead.
She lightly caught it and held it in place. “Keep it there for a moment or two, alright?”
She nodded.
“Give me one second,” I told her.
And I vanished.
A second later, I appeared in a Walgreens store.
I didn’t waste a second.
I dashed over to the health section, grabbing thermometers, ice packs, meds, and other medical supplies, not bothering to pay, I vanished again.
And I reappeared back at the motel room.
Suki gazed over at me hazily.
After placing the ice packs in the freezer, I sat on the bed beside her and pulled the water bottle off her head.
“Did that help the headache?” I said to her.
She nodded, closing her eyes as if she was very tired.
“Good,” I said gently, “I’m going to take your temperature, but first we have to wait for your forehead to heat up again.”
I opened the box containing the thermometer and threw the trash into a can next to the entertainment system.
Afterward, I pulled the plastic holding the batteries to activate it, and I tossed the thermometer on the bed, as well.
I then opened all boxes to the meds I got and dumped those, finishing with some warm packs.
I then waited about five minutes… which was the longest five minutes of my life, but I managed through it, knowing I needed to wait until I could take a valid temp.
I then gazed down at her when she coughed a little, the sound growing concerningly hoarse.
She looked asleep, though.
Her eyes were sealed shut, and she was breathing shallowly as if her throat and lungs were swollen. Not only that, but… her cheeks were flushed and filled with red, her arms and legs paled and whitened.
She didn’t look good.
But I urged myself forward and pulled the thermometer out, pushing her bangs up with my hand. “Hold still, okay?”
I clicked it, and it scanned her forehead before flashing me a number.
I nearly dropped it as a sudden cold pummeled through me.
104.1?!
JESUS!
Was that why she was growing concerningly hot last night…?
This wasn’t just a fever… this was dangerous.
I immediately ran over to the freezer and quickly tugged out ice packs and rags that I set in here, rushing over to her and setting them on her forehead and body.
I needed to get this fever down before it worsened.
After covering her in ice, I helped her sit up as she moaned in annoyance.
“Take this,” I said quickly, shaking two pain pills that had anti-inflammatory purposes in them. “Hurry, please.”
She slowly took them, hands shaking as she plopped them in her mouth.
I handed her a cup of water, and she swallowed the pills afterward.
I then guided her down.
Jesus… she must feel so ill… the poor thing.
“Your temp is very high…” I said gently, “does this happen a lot?”
She nodded, breaths still shallow. “Yeah.”
“Do I need to take you to the ER?” I demanded sternly.
She shook her head this time. “No, this happens every time I get sick. I have asthma, that’s all, and it worsens when I fall ill.” She coughed a third time, and my brows drew together. “I’ll be alright. You’re doing everything the doctors told me to do when I get sick, so I’ll be fine.”
I watched her cautiously for a moment, but my lashes lowered. “I swore to protect you. Even so from a virus. It is my duty to do so with the prize I’m getting in return. I shall care for you, Angel, I promise.”
