As Lyra sits at her vanity doing her makeup, I lay on the bed flipping through my books. For the past three day I've been going through all the books I've gotten from the library and it hasn't told me anything I don't already know. Hopefully the book I'm waiting for has some more information. Nothing in here says anything about visions. Or the four women I saw that were burned at the stake. I close the book and begin rubbing my temples, god I have a headache.
"Who knew reading books could give you a headache. Looks painful." Lyra says swiveling around in her makeup chair.
I give her a snarky look as she laughs at me. She's gotten all new makeup yesterday and has been testing it for the past hour. Now she's on the lipstick, some bright purple lipstick to be exact.
"Sorry." She laughs. "What did you find out?"
I let out a groan of agony, "Absolutely nothing Ly that's the problem. Most of the information in these books I already know. If you go to google and type in the Salam Witch Trial the information you find online will be in these books."
"Well let's shed light on a happy matter, you and Alexander finally getting together. How is it?" Her eyes light up waiting for juicy details.
"Were fine. Just been hanging out for the past few days." It really has been simple though, nothing drastic has occurred. Except the excessive making out in his car before and after school. He's so addicting.
"Does he know about the visions and stuff?"
"God no I don't want to worry him about this stuff." I say pointing to the books. It's something new that I'm dealing with so I don't want everyone to know about it. I know that he's my boyfriend and I should tell him everything, just some things need to be kept a secret and this is one of them.
Jumping off of Lyra's bed, I change the subject. "So, Claire came in on my shift. She wants us to get together and do something."
From hearing Claire's name Lyra let's out a squeal. "Claire? College Claire with the bright pink hair." She asked making sure were talking about the same Claire. The funny thing is we only know one.
"Yep, that's the one." I respond.
"Yesss I've missed her, haven't seen her in a minute. She is literally my spirt animal, I'm telling you Quinn she was my mother in a past life." When I first started out at the shop, Lyra would hand around and keep me company. After a few days of her being there, she started chatting with Claire. Next thing you know, there joined at the hip like Siamese twins.
"Right, that makes perfect sense." I say sarcastically. Moving on from the lipsticks now she's on the eyeliners. The store had 50% off eyeliners so she got all the colors.
"You know where we should go?"
"Where?" I asked curiously.
"Club Ten." She said enthused.
"Club Ten. Are you sure about that? Lyra really think about this?" I say sitting on the side of her vanity.
"I am Harlequinn, club ten is the perfect place. They have the most amazing strobe lights, the floors are broad and women get free drinks after 11." She says boosting up the idea of club ten. I pop a squat in her furry chair she got from IKEA.
"Nothing else. There's a big chunk about club ten you're leaving out." She looks at me trying to understand where I'm getting at.
"I'm not following so just tell me." She says, huffing and giving up.
I let out a deep sigh. "Club ten only let's people in over the age of 21. I don't think you noticed this, but we are only 17." She shrugs me off.
"I obviously know that Quinn. Mama Lyra handled it." She pats her chest while grabbing something out of her bag.
"Alright how did you handle it?" I focus on the items she took out of her bag. Looking closely, it's two ID cards, that are of me and Lyra's face. I take the one with my face on it out of her hands.
"Fake ID'S?" I say flapping around the ID card.
"Yep. Curtsey of Randy Bellows."
I get up from her furry chair and observe the card. It says that I was born in 1999, my name is Lauryn Smith, 5 ft 5 and was born in Albany, Oregon. Also, she added in that I was a organ donor.
"How did you know I was an organ donor?"
"Come on Quinn, everyone is a organ donor." She says in a matter-of-fact tone. In fairness she has a point, I've never seen anyone who wasn't an organ donor.
"Let me get this straight. You and Dana Bellows younger brother, Randy, made me and you some illegal ID's?"
"Hey don't judge. Everyone has their own hustle. For Randy, he busts his butt at the internship, which makes him no money, and also makes illegal IDs for underage teenagers who just want to live life. I don't know about you, but I support the youth. What do you think we talk about downstairs in the basement, certainly not about the front-page news." I just shake my head at her as she continues on.
"Oh, look Randy Gerald Rodgers died from planting azaleas, how sad." She mocks the average Samaritan voice. "Give me a break I didn't put a knife to his neck." She finally finishes up.
"Mr. Rodgers died how sad." He was a good man, when my Grandfather used to work, he would watch me on the weekends. We would watch Disney Channel together.
"That's not the point Quinn. The point is we are getting into Club ten, text Claire the details."
"I'll do it later." Looking down at the ID I think to myself. She better hope these ID's actually work or we will be sitting in jail. I don't look cute in orange.
Alexander's P.O.V.-
Knocking on my father's door, I wait for an answer.
"Come in." His voice echoes through the hall. Opening the door, I see him talking on the phone, he points to the seat in front of his desk for me to sit in. I do as he say's and sits down.
As he talks to whomever he's on the phone with, I think to myself. After what happened with the guy in the woods it had me paranoid, what he said really made me scared to my core. Sasha is very dangerous, her and her father will stop at nothing until they have what they want.
In fear of Quinn being taken in the night I wanted to ask my father if he could give her security. I can't watch or be around her 24/7 it's nearly impossible. Her safety is the most important thing to me right now. Sasha has a whole Kingdom; she could kill me and take Quinneth in a matter of seconds.
"Ok Quentin keep me updated." My father says goodbye to Quentin, who's the Pack principal of our academy, and focuses all his attention on me. "So, you wanted an audience with me. You're my son you could've just came in here."
"I know, but I don't want to see seen getting special treatment because you're my father. Everyone has to make an appointment to get a private audience from you so I wanted to do the same, to be equal." Because my father is the Alpha of the pack people treat me differently, which I don't want.
"I can see that's being fair. So, what did you need to talk about?" He gives me his undivided attention.
"When me and Quinneth went out, there was this guy, one of Sasha's goons he relayed some information to me."
"Was it harmful to us or you?" He asked curiously.
"Not to us, but to Quinneth. I was wondering if you could set up security in front of her house to make sure that she's safe." I can see him running my idea over in his head.
"No." Wait, what did he say.
"No?"
"Yeah, that's what I said If I'm not mistaken." He leans back in his chair while writing down some things.
"If I may ask why a no?"
"Look Alexander one thing you need to understand is that I don't play favorites. I can't be giving your mate special attention because she may be in danger, hell we are all in danger." I rise up from my chair in anger, my blood boils beneath my skin.
"You can't possibly compare her situation to ours. We are trained fighters who can protect ourselves, she can't. One run in with Sasha and she's dead. That's what you want huh?" I asked leaning over his desk looking deep in his eyes.
"You know I don't want that."
"Then I can't think of no other reason why you won't do this for me. Her powers haven't come in yet, she can't protect herself. She means the world to me and nothing will happen to her so if you won't protect her then I will." I slam my hand on the desk and walk towards his door. Before my hand grasp on the handle, I turn back around to him.
"Do you want to know what the message was?"
"Enlighten me son."
"Four Lotuses rise, one will fall."
"What does that even mean."
"Quinn's favorite flower is the Lotus flower. Now who's symbol was the Lotus flower, the Black Lotus flower?" His eyes widen at realization of what I was saying.
"That's right they plan on using Quinneth to wake up the First Power. She's the only one that can do it, her being the only Zastitnik known alive. I think you know how dangerous they are, even more dangerous than Rhella. If she wakes them up theirs a chance she could die, I'm guessing you don't care." I sneer at him and proceed towards the door.
"Wait." I turn around to him.
"I can't just put guards in front of her house It's not my department. I will talk to the Gamma about it." I let out a sigh of relief.
"Thank you."
"You're welcome."
Quinneths POV-
Putting all my books in my locker, I shut it and head down the hall. As I walk by the cafeteria, I see a plethora of people decorating it. It looks quite beautiful.
"Hey Quinn." I look over to see Josh waving at me.
"Hi." I give him a small wave. Josh is a really nice guy, I had him last year in Algebra.
"I don't know if your busy or not, but could you hold the ladder for me so I can put this stuff up? Don't want to fall and break my neck." I would say no, but Alexander won't be here for another 30 minutes I need something to do.
"Ok, sure." I hold the ladder steady as he climbs on up. While he's doing his thing, I look around at the cafeteria. Tomorrow is the Valentine's Day dance; they always go all out for it. Big red and pink hearts hang from the ceiling, in the middle there's a shiny disco ball.
"So, are you going to the dance tomorrow?" Josh asked while he tapes another heart to the ceiling.
"No, not really. I don't think my boyfr-." Josh immediately cuts me off.
"You don't think your older, rich boyfriend would want to go huh?"
"Yeah, how did you know I had a boyfriend?" Who's rich and older. I only told Lyra and the girls. When I told them they totally freaked out, Khadijah went on and on about how much money he had and I should take him for what he has if he breaks my heart. I just shrugged her off, sometimes she can be way too much, even more than Lyra and that says a lot.
"I saw him pull up in his expensive, sexy car to pick you up. Just an FYI, the car wasn't the only sexy thing that I saw." He gives me a wink.
"Yeah, he is sexy." I come to the realization of what he's talking about. "HEY! No gawking at my boyfriend."
"Sorry honey when I see something nice, I have to stare. If he was gay, I would totally tap that." I let out a laugh.
"I know you would." I chimed in. He comes down from the ladder, glitter decorates all over his figure.
"Thanks for the help, your free to go. Make sure you keep him on lock Tara or her Siamese twin Sara will try to snatch him up."
"I'll do my best." I say goodbye to him, pick up my bag and head to the front. As my hand comes into contact with the door, I hear a light scream from behind me.
Turning around I see a guy clutching his hands to his body. Everyone around him rushes over to see if he's ok.
"What happened are you ok?" Dana says worried.
"Uh I don't know." The guy responds. Dana grabs his hands trying to see the situation.
My eyes widen with shock. His hands are soaked with blood, the vision this was in my vision. I let out a gasp while stumbling back into a poster sign. A few people give me weird looks, "Sorry I get... squeamish around blood." I leave everyone to the situation and head out the double doors.
I let out a exasperated breath while clutching onto my shirt. It's been days since I've seen a vision, then all of a sudden this happens. The bloody hands don't really make any sense. I mean the oak tree showed me the four girls that were burned at the stake, but the bloody hands have no connection to anything. The blood wasn't mines or someone I knew, and the hands weren't either. I'm kind of rethinking these visions, maybe they mean nothing.
I get myself together, can't have anyone seeing me freak out. Looking down at the clock on my phone, god better get to the front of the school before Alexander leaves me. I sit on the curb and bring out my book to read. Lately, the information in here has been cool and interesting, but none of it has been valuable to me.
The wind has been blowing relatively hard today. I tuck my hair tightly behind my ear as I turn the page. Reading intently, I see something interesting, maybe even beneficial.
The paragraph says, 'Majority of the women who were accused of being witches were of all different ranks. The women that were posted below most likely were assistants or mentors of the top ranked witches. Whereas the women posted above were the most powerful ones of all, making the rules and spells.'
For days I wondered how important the girls were, guess they were the top dogs. On the side there's a picture to compliment the text. I'm taken back by the image, it's the picture from the image of when I touched the oak tree. Under the photo I don't see any names. My hands glide over their faces they look so lost and alone.
"What does this all mean?" I whisper silently to myself.
"Quinneth?" I hear a voice say, it sounds muffled to me. "Quinneth, baby?" Looking up I see Alexander screaming out my name.
"Coming." I quickly pick up my stuff and head towards his car. My grandfather has been currently borrowing my car for the last week. His had some kind of problem with the engine, so Alexanders been picking me up. I do kind of feel bad, his father's company is all the way in San Francisco and he drives an hour out here to pick me up. I know he doesn't mind, but I do.
I open the car door and jump right in. "Hey cutie." Leaning over I grab his face and give him a kiss.
"Mhm, sweet like candy." He coos out. I tap his cheek lightly while I put on my seatbelt. "I called your name two times and you didn't hear me, you ok?" He pulls out of the parking lot.
"Yeah, I'm fine just was so entranced with my book." I put my bag below my feet. "You didn't have to drive all the way out here to pick me up, not that I'm complaining or anything."
"I know, but I love picking you up." He pinches my cheeks, "I can't get enough of you." I swat his hand away.
"Oh, if you don't mind, we need to stop by Ida's shop."
"What for?" He turns down the street.
"I left my book for English there. Do you mind?" I mean it is his car.
"You know I don't mind." He turns on the street that will take us into town.
"I'll be back in a jiffy." Stepping out the car, I walk in the shop seeing Ida talking to a customer.
"You have a good day and enjoy that painting." She says to the customer, when she spots me her lips turn into a smile. The customer walks past me out the door.
"What are you doing here honey, you're not working today."
"I know, I just forgot my book here." I lean over the counter and grab it from the shelf.
"Ahh that's not good." She looks past me to Alexander sitting in his car, waiting for me.
"So, you and Alexander huh?" I blush when she mentions his name.
"Just happened a few days ago." I tell her.
"How has it been?" She asked curiously leaning on the counter behind her.
"Amazing." I say smiling from eye to eye.
"He is very handsome, if I was a few years younger I would tap that." My face scrunches up in disgust.
"Alright I'm going to leave now." I awkwardly back up.
"Wait, before you leave this came for you." She hands me a small package.
"For me? Why was it sent it here." She shrugs her shoulders.
"It was left on the doorstep."
"Thanks Ida, see you in two days." I walk out the door and head back to Alexander's car.
"Is that it." He asks clutching onto my hand.
"Yeah." He starts his car and heads down the road. While he drives, I stare at the package, who would leave me something? Why wouldn't this be sent to my work and not my house? Hopefully it's something good I'll open it when I get home. I tuck it safely in my backpack and look out the window.
