I run downstairs with my backpack and jacket in hand. I woke up late today and I only have 20 minutes to get to school or I'm late. I wave to my grandpa and run out the door to my car and semi speed down the road to school. Never go to a party on a Thursday it will ruin you. I race my car into the parking space, grab my bag and run to my locker.
I check my watch it's 7:50, yes just in time to get my books and head on to Chemistry. I throw my backpack and jacket on the floor and start grabbing my books from the locker. I slam the locker and run to class as soon as I enter the class the bell rings, perfect timing. I open my book to chapter 8 and take out my notebook and pens. I start to write notes from the chapter when I get a ding from my phone.
"Hey, whoever phone that is turn it off." My chemistry teacher says.
I don't really need to get in trouble now. I raise my hand to ask could I go to the bathroom. He says yes and I run to the bathroom to check my message. I put the phone up to my ear and hear Lyra's voice.
"Hey Quinn I was going to tell you this at the party, but I couldn't find you. I had to stay home today I feel like crap I drank too many beers. I need to ask you a favor can you take my shift at the vet clinic today I will owe you big time thanks babe. Oh, and Jack has the key to the clinic you need to lock up." Voicemail ended.
Jesus leaves it to Lyra to get drunk on a Thursday. I leave the bathroom and start to walk back to class next thing I know I find myself on the ground. I groan in pain and look up to see Will. I scurry to my feet and back up. He starts to inch closer and closer to me. He wouldn't try anything in school, right?
"Hey, hey I'm not going to hurt you I just want to apologize for last night I was way out of line. I was super drunk." He said with his hands up in defense. I squint my eyes at him to make sure if he was sincere, he was.
"Hey uh water under the bridge. Just... don't do that ever again to me and to anyone else." I say with my finger flaring in the air. He nods his head letting me know that he understood me. He starts to walk the other way when I stop him with a question.
"Hey who was that guy that stopped you from potentially killing me the other night." I ask.
He turns around and walks up to me, looking at me with a smirk on his face.
"I don't know who he was." He responds to my question. I look in his eyes to make sure he was telling me the truth, he wasn't. Why won't he tell me what is this guy a different species? I let it go and wave him off and go back to class. The rest of the day was pretty regular, took some notes etc. The bell rings for everyone to go home, I grab my belongings and head on over to the field to get the key from Jack.
The sun beams on my face as I walk onto the track, God how could they stand to be out here. I run across the track so I wouldn't run into anyone, that would be embarrassing. I search around for him but I didn't see him anywhere. I saw a football player on the field and walked over to him, maybe he could tell me where Jack was. I tap on his shoulder and he turns around to look at me. It's Myer's I have been dying to see him since the party last night and the diner. I try to keep my composure and mustier out my words.
"Hey I'm looking for Jack, Jack Thompson, he has something I need." I ask him.
"Jacks held up in the locker room by the coach he said you would be coming out here follow me." He waves his hand for me to follow him and I did. He opens up the small pocket of Jack's bag and pulls out the shiny key. I open up my hand for it as he places It there gently.
"Thank you... Uh tell Jack I said thank you and I'll see him tomorrow. What's your name again anyway?" I ask him. I know his name obviously, but Lyra told me to always act like you don't really know the guy so they'll be more interested.
He steps up close to me and tells me his name. "Myer's". He says then walks away from me to the field. I stand there for a few seconds and look as him as he walks away, there's something about him I can't put my finger on it. I shrug off the feeling and walk over to my car, hop in and head to work. Pulling up to the antique shop I grab my bag and head on in. I sit down my bag at the front desk and go to Ida's office. I knock on the door and lean in to see her sitting down, shuffling through papers and drinking earl grey tea.
"Hey Ida I need to leave work early today to sub in for Lyra at the vet clinic." I speak.
"Let me guess Lyra got drunk again." She says without looking up at me.
"Yeah sorry...again." I tell her in a pleading voice. This isn't the first time I had to take off work for Lyra and it won't be the last.
"It's alright honey you are lucky the store is slow today go on in and work." She says shooing me off. I head on over to the desk and do just that work.
2 hours later....
I say goodbye to Ida and head on over to the vet clinic.
Opening the door, I'm welcomed by the stench of dog and the sounds of barks. I walk to the bathroom and throw on my scrubs. Since Lyra is always getting drunk and I always have to fill in for her I decided to buy my own scrubs. I put my bag in Lyra's locker and head on to the back. I'm greeted by Dr. Lee; he waves me to come on over to him.
"Hey Quinneth it's been a while, let me guess Lyra is "sick" again." He says as he quotes on the sick part. I laugh at this comment and nod my head in confirming this comment.
"Yeah."
"Well, uh well there is a lot to do today. Follow me." He says while walking to the back I follow behind him. "I need you to wash out the cages, fill up the animal's food and water. After that meet me in room 3 to help out with a patient." He finishes up and walks to his office.
I walk to the back and start with the cages; oh, Lyra owes me BIG time. After cleaning the cages, filling up the food and water, fighting with a dog and helping out Dr. Lee with a patient it was finally 8:00 and time to leave. Everyone already left so I have to lock up, yay me. I make sure all the animals are Ok, turn off the lights and lock the door. I throw my purse over my shoulder and head towards my car.
Suddenly, I hear a rustle in the bushes.
I stop in my tracks and pull out my pocketknife. I told my grandfather that I didn't need one because it's St. Helena only crime down here is running the stoplight. He insisted that I had it and thank the lord for that. I inch closer and closer to the bush as it rustles more and more. I jump with fright as the mystery creature popped out, it was a wolf.
I leaned down to touch him to almost have it bite my hand off I jump back. Someone's feisty.
I can't just leave him here and I can't call Dr. Lee it's too late. I muster up enough courage to put my hand against his snout so he could smell me, I don't know if this is going to work, I saw it on T.V. once. I wait a few minutes and reach for him it actually worked cool.
He's pretty heavy so I'm practically dragging him to the door. I sit him down gently, unlock the door and drag him to room 3. I lift him on the bed to examine him. I see a long gash going down his back, its bleeding pretty badly whoever did this wanted him dead.
I look through the cabinets for ointment, bandages and a towel. I grab everything and sit it on the bed. He whimpered in pain I could see the hurt in his piercing black eyes, wait PIERCING BLACK EYES this is the wolf that I saw outside my window and across the street from school. Wow fate has a way of working itself doesn't it.
I take the alcohol and dab it on the towel oh this is going to b-u-r-n. I put it to the wound and he yelps out in pain I flinch at his response. I put just a little more on there, apply the ointment and wrap him up in bandages. He finally calms down after 20 minutes I stand back and reflect on the room. Bloody towels on the floor, bottles of ointment and alcohol lay on the bed and blood takes over my shirt and pants. I throw everything away and wash my hands. I look at the wolf as he lays there all comfortably. I can't just leave him here Dr. Lee might freak out. I did the only thing I felt was right... Take him home with me.
Driving down the road it's 9:30 at night, got a wolf in my backseat, it's a full moon and did I mention I have a potentially rabid wolf in my backseat. Gosh what was I thinking I look back at him, he's sleeping peacefully. I need to head to the local store to get him some food and some dog pain pills. This has got to be the craziest thing I have ever done. Well can't turn back now I pull in the parking lot of the local store. I look in the backseat to see him awake, he is actually pretty cute for a wolf.
"You better appreciate this dude." I tell him. He lifts his head up and smirks. I know a wolf didn't just smirk at me. I smirk right back at him. "Stay in the car and don't let anybody know you're here I don't need P.E.T.A called on me." I tell him as I walk into the store. 10 minutes later I come out with a bag full of dog food, pain meds and some chew toys to give him some entertainment. I throw the bag in the passenger seat and drive on home.
I park the car in the drive way, grab my bag and the dog stuff out the car. Running it to the door then go back to the car to grab the wolf. Did I mention to you that he was heavy I manage to lift him and get him upstairs to my bedroom after 30 minutes of fighting with him. I wipe the beads of sweat dancing down my forehead, thank God grandfather is out at bingo night or else this would be a long conversation. I lay an old blanket on the ground with a pillow and lay him on it. He nuzzles up to the pillow and starts to fall asleep, crap not yet.
I grab the bag and run downstairs to crush up the dog pain killers and run upstairs. He isn't all the way asleep yes oh yes, I shake him a little and lift up his head. He looks me in the eyes all droopy like, awe he's pretty cute. He opens his mouth to the pain meds as I give them to him. He lays his head down and goes to sleep, pretty quickly might I add.
I stand back up and look down at him. What am I going to do with him tomorrow? Leaving him here will give chance to grandpa walking in here and be scared half to death. Whereas I could leave him in my car it's going to be pretty cool out leave him food and water. What if someone sees him, I don't want a situation at hand. I sigh in frustration and proceed to ready for bed.
Walking out the bathroom I grab my bloody t-shirt and put it in the bottom of the hamper and throw my towel on top. If grandpa saw it, I don't know how I could explain that to him. I walk over to my bed and snuggle under the covers and get comfortable. Laying there I lean over my bed to stare at him in curiosity. What happened to him out there? Is his pack worried about him or is he a rogue wolf? All these questions flooded in my mind soon I dozed off into a deep sleep.
I wake up to the warm sun dancing on my face, stretching out my arms then rise up from the bed. Wiping the crust out my eyes I look around for the wolf. Wait... Where is he? My eyes bulge open when I don't see him, I practically fall out my bed and run downstairs. Where the hell is he I think as I run from room to room. I ran so fast I accidently ran into grandpa... GRANDPA!!!
"Quinneth what the hell are you doing running around at 6:00 in the morning!" He yells to me while sipping his hot coffee. What do I say?
"I was uhm, I stutter out looking for an excuse, umm looking for some pain pills massive headache." I said rubbing my forehead.
"OK." He said all awkwardly. "There in the cabinet behind you and stop all that running." He walks back upstairs in his room as soon as I hear the door closed, I run quietly and look for the wolf. This house isn't that big where could he be? I stop in my tracks when I hear something scratching at the back door. Leaning into the room I see him very much scratching at the door.
"Hey dude you can't be going wherever you want my grandpa could have found you." I tell him while raising his face at me so he will know. He looks in my eyes with curiousness and looks off into the woods. It is quite beautiful today, clear skies the wind blows amiss through the trees.
"Come on let's get you inside so my grandfather won't see you." Since he's still injured, I help him back upstairs in my room. He walks over to his bed that I made and lays down to rest. I check my clock on the phone to see that it's 6:30, time to get ready for school.
I come out the bathroom with a white fuzzy towel wrapped around my body. Water droplets descend down my legs. I look to my left to see the wolf staring at me with curiousness in his eyes.
"Hey, turn the other way while I change." I tell him in a demanding voice. Pointing towards the wall he gets the hint and turn his head. I dry off really quick and put on my clothes, turning around annually to make sure he isn't looking. I finish and start to pack my stuff and throw my hair into a bun. Walking over to the mirror I observe my outfit. A black long sleeve crop top with a red heart in the middle. Blue fitted jeans and my white sneakers.
I grab everything and head downstairs to put it in my car. About 5 minutes ago grandpa left to go to his friend's brunch party so I don't have to sneak around with the wolf. I close the front door and lean against it while looking towards the stair case. Do I bring him with me to school, or leave him here and risk grandfather coming home and seeing him? I did the only thing possible, I brought him to school with me.
I let down the windows in my car while I drive on down the empty road to school. The winds blow through my curly tendrils. I look in my mirror to see what he's doing; the wind blows through his midnight black fur as he looks out the window. I take my eyes away from him and procced to look back at the road.
I wonder where he came from and if anyone is looking for him. I know if I went missing my grandfather would hunt the ends of the earth until he found me and I him. I kind of like having him around, but I can't keep him forever. I see my school in the distance, kids riding their skateboards and bikes, girls kissing their boyfriends off to class and me pulling into the parking lot with a wolf in my backseat. I turn the engine off and turn around in my seat to look at him.
"Now look here buddy, I have to go to school today OK you can't go in so your only option is to sit in my car and go to sleep or play with the toys I bought." I point to the bag of toys and he looks at me with a 'are you kidding' face. I roll my eyes at him. I also roll up the front of the car's window's while leaving the back open. "No looking out the window someone may see you, I got you some water and food right here, I point to the food and water sitting on the floor of the car, and I will be out here every other period to check on you." I finish with my list and rub his fur as he leans into my hand. I give a half smile and throw my bag over my shoulder. He leans down and drinks the water from the bowl he'll be fine.
"Who are you talking to?" A feminine voice says from behind me. I turn around wide-eyed to see Lyra standing there wearing a white blouse with a black and white checkered skirt and black shoes. She really has style. I hastily turn to my car and push the wolf's head down to turn back around pushing Lyra and me towards the direction of the school.
