"What happened?" Claire said as I sat on my bed, leaning back while I checked my emails.
I glanced up. "You heard?"
"How that new-girl escaped, and you had to go find her? Yes. What happened?"
I sighed. "I don't know. I thought she was in the house all morning, but it turns out, she went for a morning stroll. Something happened, and she called me while hiding in a closed shop, asking shakily for me to pick her up."
"Do you think..." she whispered.
"North?" I said, nodding. "Yes, I wouldn't put it past him. That and it was on the news that a women was stabbed through the eye and her dog went missing."
"Skye has a new dog..." Claire concluded.
I nodded again. "Yes, she does. Reason tells me that she had an encounter with North, and she ran away, probably asking the woman for help, and then North murdered her, so Skye took the dog."
"Why did she take the dog?" Claire asked, confused.
I smirked. "She didn't want North to kill the dog. Skye's a softie when it comes to animals."
Claire laughed. "That's why that demon cat likes her."
"Lucipurr," I corrected.
"You know what I'm talking about," she said, giving me a side glance.
But a sudden knock cast on the door, and I gazed over to find a Skye standing in the doorway, looking too shy.
I smiled. "Hey, what's up?"
She glanced over at Claire and stepped back. "I can come back."
"No," Claire said, stepping out the door, "go on. I was just talking." She then sent me a smile, and I saw it, giving her a warning glance.
She just walked off.
"You can come in," I said to Skye.
"I—I know," she said a little harshly.
Aww... she was scared and shy, but she was still trying to act all self-confident. Cute.
"Close the door," I said to her. "You want to talk, right?"
She shook her head, cheeks glowing a bright red.
"Then..." I said, watching as the German shepherd puppy crawled out from behind her.
"Can I... can I stay in here with you...?" Her voice was quiet as if she couldn't physically ask that question confidently.
I decided to tease her and pressed my hand over my ear. "What?"
She glared at me in response, and I chuckled.
"Alright," I said, patting the bed. "Close the door and come on."
She sighed then, stepping over to the door and shut it, and she turned back toward me, looking half-shy, half-irritated as she stepped back over to the bed.
She crawled on then, making me smile as she slipped under the covers, and she settled against my chest, curling up with me, the puppy jumping on the bed and curling up at the foot.
I just wrapped my arms around her and started caressing her back, pulling the covers back over us as she snuggled her face into my neck, clearly seeking comfort.
And I let her.
Because I'm nice.
"I thought you were mad at me," I told her, keeping her close. "You've been avoiding me all night, Skye."
She only snuggled closer in response, making me hold her to me tighter as I started rocking her.
"You're shaking," I commented, feeling a slight rattle come from her form. "Are you cold?"
She shook her head.
My lashes lowered then.
Fear.
I set my cheek on her head, rubbing her arms as she huddled closer with me. "It's okay... shhh... You're alright...."
She seemed to ease at my voice, and so I just continued.
"You're right here," I promised her, "with me, see?" I pulled her arm out from the comforter and guided her fingers to touch the edge of one of my runes.
When I pulled back, she kept it there, tracing the lines as I smiled, continuing to rub her arm.
I let her calm down... it seemed as if when she traced or touched my runes, it grounded her in the real world, and she started settling back into herself.
"Something happened, didn't it?" I told her, making her stiffen. "Don't lie to me."
She remained quiet, though shivers started racking her body again, so I just sighed and guided her to touch my rune again.
"You can tell me later," I whispered, rubbing her arm. "I think right now you just need to calm down... and rest."
She pulled closer to me, and I raised my arms as she snuggled with my form, and I just smiled and held her to me.
"I'm right here," I promised quietly, "protecting you."51Please respect copyright.PENANAEoFlg2aeke
