"You ready?" Sebastian said from the driver's side as he parked his car on my parent's street.
I breathed out a shaky sigh, closing my eyes tightly as tears warmed them. "They're going to be so mad. What do I say?"
"What did we practice?" he asked me, smiling. "What did we say?"
"Tell them that I was kidnapped... and that I broke my way out, and then I came back home."
Sebastian nodded, smiling at me as I glanced over at him nervously.
"What if they can tell that I'm lying?" I questioned then.
He chuckled. "You're not lying, Skye. You were kidnapped by North a week ago, and then you broke your way out. Why else do you think you're covered in bandages?"
I glanced down at my arms that were covered in wraps. "I thought she healed me."
"Doctor Jen put those on as a precaution," Sebastian explained for the hundredth time. "North broke a lot of stuff, Angel."
I sighed and nodded, lowering my head.
He smiled at me. "Are you ready?"
I nodded.
He just nudged my arm, and I opened the door before I dared to stop myself, and I ran home, breathing shakily before I stopped at my house and slammed on the front door.
When there was no response, I slammed again.
But this time I heard someone yell, "Coming!"
Tears brimmed in my eyes as I gazed up, and the front door parted.
My mom stood there, looking half-numb, half-irritated as if people knocked on the door all day, but she looked down at me.
Her entire expression hardened.
She stared then; as if she couldn't believe it, and she stepped out onto the front porch, tears brimming in her eyes. "Skye...?" she whispered. "Tell me I'm not dreaming."
I cried out and launched to her, latching onto her as she caught me back, holding on tightly as I buried my face in her neck.
My soul was crushing... I'd been gone for so long. It was crushing, and I thought I might've been dying.
My dad came rushing to the front door, letting out relieved curses as he threw his arms around us.
We all exchanged sobs and cries of relief, letting out all our sorrow and frustration as we clutched onto each other for dear life.
After a couple minutes, mom drew back and eyed me in concern. "Where were you?! You've been gone for WEEKS!"
Tears brimmed in my eyes, and I breathed out a sigh before I whispered, "I was kidnapped... by a guy named North. And he... he broke my arms and my legs. I escaped, though, and... and I lived."
Mom clutched her mouth, dad's eyes hardening to stone, and I just looked away.
"But you're... all patched up," mom whispered.
"That would be me," someone said from behind us.
We all flipped around to find Sebastian standing there, and my eyes widened in horror when he stepped up the porch steps.
"My name is Sebastian," he greeted to my parents, stepping up until he stopped by my side. "Skye was kidnapped—as she said—but when I found her, she was injured; covered in bruises, wounds, broken bones and torn ligaments, so I took her afterwards to patch her up. I'm sorry I kept her from you for so long."
My mom's lips parted as she glanced at me, and then back at him. "Uhm... Skye. Who is this?"
I glanced at him nervously and chuckled. "Uhm, he's right. He... he saved me."
Sebastian glanced at me with a soft smile, though I avoided eye-contact.
Him introducing himself to my parents were not part of the plan.
"After what happened," Sebastian explained to them, "I'd recommend getting an alarm system intact to keep out the intruders. And don't worry about your daughter, she has amazing fighting skills."
"All thanks to the martial arts," mom whispered.
"Hold on..." dad said, narrowing his eyes, "are you that boy scout that came to our door? You were the one who came to our door the day she vanished!"
Mom looked over at Sebastian then, studying him. "No, no, he isn't. He has different features; I'd remember that."
Dad narrowed his eyes, but shrank back into himself before nodding. "Yeah, you're right."
I breathed out a sigh, but only Sebastian seemed to notice.
"Come on," mom said to dad, "let him in. He saved our daughter. Let him in."
"Actually," Sebastian said, smiling softly, "I have to go for now, but if I could come back later for dinner or something, that would be nice. Is that okay, ma'am?"
Mom blinked at his kind nature, but she just nodded, clearly confused.
"Thank you, ma'am," Sebastian said, nodding at her then at my dad, "sir."
And he spared me a smirk before descending down the stairs.
Mom stared after him as he vanished down the sidewalk, and she glanced down at me, making me stiffen. "Skye," she said, "is that your boyfriend?"
My entire being froze, and I looked away for a moment. "Uhm... yes, we shared a kiss."
"Well..." dad said as mom eyed me sharply, "I'm out of this conversation, have fun."
He then vanished as tears brimmed in my eyes, and I just waited for mom to scream at me for this.
"I'm glad," she said then.
I gazed up, alarmed.
She was smiling, and I almost thought she had a stroke or something because this was not like her.
"He's cute," she told me then, still smiling. "And he saved my baby. I should've never been hard on you with relationships, Skye. I'm sorry. Clearly you know which ones are for you."
My mouth dropped, but she just smiled softly. "What?"
"Mom, are you feeling okay?" I asked her.
She giggled, making my eyes round. "Yes, excited to have him for dinner. What's his favorite food?"
She walked in the house, and I watched after her before following and closing the door behind me.
*****
"Hey," Sebastian whispered as he slipped in bed behind me, making me glance over as he brushed his thumb along my neck, "how did tonight go?"
I smiled and rolled over. "You're a smooth talker. My mom actually likes you, and it scares me."
He chuckled, resting down behind me. "Your mom knows your going to be eighteen soon, so she's getting more lenient."
I turned over to face him, setting my cheek on my hands. "You've been wanting to kill me, and I still am in love with you. What does that say about me?"
He chuckled and scooted closer. "It means our love is real."
"But..." I whispered, "we can't have...." I trailed off.
"Sex?" he finished, chuckling. "I suppose not, but... is that really a problem? I get enough of a high kissing you and holding you."
My eyes softened then, and I smiled. "Hey, why don't you explain something to me."
He rolled his eyes, shifting onto his back. "Oh, no."
I just giggled and propped myself up. "When you were talking to Jacob that one day... when you talked to him in some language, what did you say?"
Sebastian smiled over at me. "You think I can think that far?"
I shrugged. "Wouldn't be the first time you'd think that far."
He chuckled. "You know me too well." He sighed then, and I shifted so I rested my head on my hand. "I was talking to him in French; his second language. He started with, 'isn't that the girl who....'" Sebastian glanced over at me. "He was going to ask if you were the girl who I was planning to kill."
My lashes lowered in despair. "Oh."
Sebastian nodded, sighing. "Yep. I told him, 'shut up, unless you want to die. I changed my mind. She is no longer the target. I was wrong.'"
"Wow," I said, "you and death threats. I guess it runs in the family."
He gave me a look, and I giggled.
"Anyway," he said, "he asked me, 'why,' and I replied, 'I don't want to do it anymore. You told me it was wrong; you were right. It was wrong.'"
I shifted over a little. "So... in your note, you said that Jacob was telling you to not kill me, and you resisted him. Why did he stand up for me?"
Sebastian gave me a look. "Because it was wrong."
I nodded, understanding, but he just leaned off and flicked off the light, and he caught my arms.
I gasped a little when he pulled me against him.
He buried his face in my hair, and I relished in snuggling into the soft skin of his neck.
"Why did my parents recognize you, then they didn't?" I asked him.
He just breathed me in, and for some reason, I enjoyed it.
It felt nice knowing that he liked the smell of my skin.
"I altered their memories," he replied, holding me tighter, "in that moment. Now go to sleep. I just want to feel you."
I just stared off into the darkness.
But my entire being stilled, and I nudged Sebastian's arm.
"What?" he said, annoyed.
I breathed shakily. "Someone's standing next to the door."
He turned over then, narrowing his eyes as the figure only leaned against the wood.
"I wanted to do that, you know," North's familiar dark tone said, and I froze. "Cuddle with her. She looks so warm."
Sebastian pulled me closer. "You injected her with daemivenom."
North chuckled then, and I just stared at his image, wondering if... if everything would ever be the same again.
"I told you," North said, smirking, "don't touch her blood."
"You're dead," Sebastian hissed.
North just kept his position, and I glanced down to find Sebastian pulling me closer and covering me entirely with the blankets.
Was he trying to get me closer?
"Listen, Skye," Sebastian whispered, gazing down at me then. "Can you do something for me?"
I nodded, lips parted.
"Stay close," he told me, smiling, "as close as you find comfortable. Forget he's there, and just snuggle with me and pretend everything's normal. He cannot get to you or your parents. I have a shield over us, and there are runes carved into your parent's bedroom door, so he cannot get to them."
North just chuckled. "You little ones think you're so intelligent, don't you?"
Sebastian pulled my head so I could hide my face into his neck, but I watched North still, breathing shallowly.
His smile was demonic, sadistic.
He was planning something. I could tell.
"Screw you," North sang then, eyes glowing in the darkness, "did you really think I loved you? Well... the fight's only started, and guess who's winning?"
His eyes glowed dangerously as his smile widened.
ME.
