I propped myself up on my elbow as Skye lay on the bed next to me, and I hovered over her, lightly brushing her hair away from her forehead continuously.
She was awake, though she looked entirely dazed; her lashes were parted, but only slightly, and she was gazing up at me lazily, blinking at random times, and her lips were parted as she breathed softly.
I smiled down at her as she remained completely vulnerable, clearly too exhausted to move.
"Are you a feisty tiger?" I asked her as her eyes flickered up to me. "Or are you a snuggle bunny?"
She gave me a confused look and turned her head to the side—into my chest, mind you—and closed her eyes for a moment, though I just continued to run my fingers through her hair.
"I got my answer," I said, chuckling. "Snuggle bunny."
She just turned over, making my brows raise, and I let her turn toward me.
Though she just pulled my arm out from under me, and I yelped when I dropped back on the bed, and she crawled back onto my chest and snuggled closer.
I smiled. "So, demanding."
She just held herself closer. "You're right," she told me, "I'm a snuggle bunny."
I started rubbing her back, and she let out some cute sound.
"Goddamn it..." she muttered.
"What?" I said.
She just curled up. "I don't want to move. You make it hard to wake up."
I chuckled then, continuing to rub her back.
"Hey, Sebastain...?" she whispered.
"Yes?"
"With school..." she told me, "I want to... I want to graduate, but if I go to school, my parents will surely find me."
"Your school's mostly online, right?" I asked her.
She nodded in my chest.
"Then do it online," I told her, brushing my fingers through her hair. "You'll still get grades."
"But what if they track my computer?"
"There's one in the office that cannot be traced," I replied. "We can turn that into your workplace if you want, alright?"
She nodded then, sighing as she settled in my embrace.
"Sometimes I wanna bite you," she said then, and I glanced down at her in amusement.
"Now I'm starting to think you're the vampire," I quipped.
She gave me a bored look. "No, not to hurt you. I just wanna see your reaction."
I arched my brows.
"See?" she said. "Like this."
I winced when she sank her teeth deep into my neck, though not enough to break skin.
"Ow!" I said, lightly patting her head. "Stop that, vampire."
I instinctively pulled back, and she let go and giggled.
She just gazed up at me, and we locked eyes for a moment.
I stared down at her, finding those big eyes glistening, and those cheeks shaded over lightly, making her glow.
God... she was so gorgeous.
I brushed my fingers along the side of her face, and her lashes fluttered, though I just moved them to tuck a strand of hair away.
I then glided it down her cheek and under her jaw, tipping her chin up.
Her lashes fluttered shut when I lowered myself, and I clasped our lips together.
She let out a soft moan, clutching onto me as I groaned in response, pulling her closer.
God her scent was intoxicating, and her taste was so delicious... like fruit and sunshine, and she felt so good under my hands; her hair so soft, her skin so light and gleaming.
I needed everything she was...
But the moment I pulled closer, a knock fell on the door.
Skye and I broke off, and she blinked, clearly disoriented as I smiled down at her.
I just spoke up, "Who is it?"
"Uh, your sister?" Claire said. "I don't know what you're doing in there, but your girlfriend's best friend is here. Apparently, Chris was stupid enough to tell her everything."
Skye gazed up nervously at me as I sighed and pinched the bridge of my nose, seething.
*****
"I swear, man, I didn't break the law!" Chris said as I stood in the foyer, Skye standing next to me as Neveah leaned against the wall, clearly bored.
"It is against angel law to bring a human into a house full of angels, Chris," I told him, glaring. "It's like you're asking to get sent to hell."
He threw his hands up. "I had to do it! She belongs here!"
"I don't think the archangels would agree," I told him, brows arched. "Chris, erase her mind right now before the angels realize what you just did."
"No!" he said angrily. "No, I will not!"
"Guys," Neveah said.
"You are going to get all of us in serious trouble, Chris," Claire said. "Serious trouble."
"Guys," Neveah said again, but we ignored her.
"You broke what... three laws?" I told him, shaking my head. "Telling her about this world, introducing her to other fallen which—in angel eyes—is considered extremely dangerous for human, that and you brought a human into your home which is very forbidden."
"GUYS!" Neveah yelled, making us glance over. "Can I SPEAK, please?"
We all stared at her; brows arched.
"I have a secret," she said, crossing her arms over her chest and leaning against the wall, "I'm not human."
The room seemed to freeze in time, though I just arched my brows as Skye stiffened next to me.
Chris turned to her, stunned, and Claire was just standing there, lips parted.
"What...?" Skye said finally, voice cracking.
Neveah never replied, just leaned against the wall, seeming bored.
I waved my hands around then. "Then... what are you?"
"My dad died ten years ago," Neveah explained, emotion cut from her voice as if she was suddenly numb. "And my mom's still alive. My father was a fallen angel, my mom was human. The archangels killed my father when they found out."
Skye started breathing shallowly. "Why didn't you... tell me?"
Neveah glanced over at her, smiling softly. "Honey, I didn't know you weren't human! I didn't know that spy-boy here wasn't human either." She gestured to me.
I rolled my eyes, slightly irritated but I just dropped it.
Skye looked over at Chris. "Did you know?"
He glanced back and nodded.
She just let out a noise of protest and stormed off, and I glanced as she walked back upstairs.
"You going to get her?" Claire said, eyeing me.
I sighed. "Thinking about it."
But I just glanced over at Chris; who seemed slightly hopeful for my reaction, and I knew he was asking despite him not saying it.
He always had those goddamn sparkling eyes when he asked me something.
I rolled my eyes. "Pick one of the bedrooms upstairs and have her make it her own. Just remember," my eyes glowed with warning, "one of them is off limits."
Chris nodded. "I know. I'll show her another one. Thank you, Sebastian... It's just with all that's happening, her mom won't be able t—"
I put my hand up. "I know. Same situation with Skye. Just... show her around. I have to go play the nice, emotional boyfriend."
I then walked off and up the stairs after Skye.
I knew where she went, anyway.
After a moment of walking, I stopped by the double doors of the library and pushed them open, stepping in without announcing myself.
But I glanced up, finding Skye on the top floor, lying back-down on one of the couches with her head dangling off, though she was just playing on her phone.
I sighed and closed the doors, then making my way toward the latter and climbed it.
When I reached the top, I stepped over to her, settling on the couch across from hers as I set my cheek in my hands.
"Not reading?" I said, smirking. "That's new."
She glanced over at me in boredom. "I am reading."
"On your phone?" I inquired with a brow raised.
She nodded, looking back at the screen. "It's a short story me and Neveah wrote when we were in sixth grade; it was horrible, for one. But after Neveah told us that she was half-fallen, I remembered the plot-line of the story... how it was about a fallen angel girl who lived alone for so many years after her father died. Her mom was fine, but... she still was distant from her mother, and she had a step-father that she loved so much. So she acted as if he was her father...." She trailed off, looking lost. "I didn't know... that her current father... wasn't her actual father."
I sighed, feeling my heart ache slightly but I ignored it like I always did. "Sometimes..." I told her, eyes soft, "things happen that we just... don't know. And then when we figure it out, we realize so many things that were hints... but at the time they happened, you didn't see it. It's normal."
Skye rolled over to face me. "Sebastian?"
"Yes?"
"Did you have parents?" she wondered softly.
My stomach turned, and a flash of a woman's sadistic face crossed my mind.
I closed my eyes tightly and sighed, standing now. "I think we should go see if Neveah has settled in yet."
Skye's brows drew together. "You're dodging the question... you always dodge the question when it hurts to answer."
I looked over at her. "I'm not talking about it now, alright? Don't press into my life. I don't like it when people are nosey. It's not all about you, Skye."
She just glanced at the ground and rolled into a sitting position, her black hair draping over her shoulders as she moved to slide off the couch. "Alright."
I reached out to touch her, but she just pulled away, and I drew back, brows drawing together.
Why was my stomach turning harder?
Was it because... I upset her and I knew it?
I honestly didn't remember the last time I felt this way.
"Skye..." I said, "I didn't mean to—"
"It's fine," she said shortly, avoiding eye-contact. "I guess we're not..." she trailed off for a moment, "never mind. I'll leave you alone like you want."
And she moved to climb down the latter, though I just stared after her.
