Rena was standing in front of a colosseum type building. There were crowds of people surrounding the entrance cheering people on as they walked inside. Rena had her cloak draped over her shoulders. She was wearing her usual black leather pants, and a blue top. She felt a little out of place with her black converse but figured people wouldn’t take too much notice, or so she hoped.
She stepped into the coliseum and noticed the other applicants all standing around nervously. This must be a big deal to these people.
She heard a commotion form the side and noticed a short kid running around surrounded by birds.
“AHH, GAhhh. Cut it out. Can’t you ever give a guy a break?” the boy screamed.
A few other kids started laughing. “The way they’re swarming him–must have zero mana!” one said.
“Guess someone always has it worse!” another said.
Rena looked at the poor kid running from the birds. He had gray hair with a black headband with the symbol of a bull on it. Could he be from the Black Bulls?
“I told you guys to buzz off–Everybody knows I don’t have magic, so let’s move on, already!” the boy said, swatting at the birds.
Rena let out a little chuckle. No magic? He’s probably not a magic knight then.
Suddenly everyone turned their attention to the balcony as eight people stepped out and sat down. Rena followed them from left to right. Starting on the left was a short girl with purple hair, blue eyes and a pink pointy hat. Next to her was a tall, lean man with gold eyes and loose, medium-length black hair. On the left side of his face, he has a thin, red scar. Following him was a tall woman with blonde hair braided into a bun. A single braid hanging down on the left side of her face. She was wearing armor and a decorated helmet.
Next was a slender male with fair skin, narrow purple eyes, and small eyebrows. His bangs were braided down between his eyes down to the tip of his nose. There was an empty chair between him and another tall man with purple eyes and long, straight vermillion hair. He had red markings around his eyes and a red diamond mark in the center of his forehead. Next to him was a smaller, younger man with spiky, aqua-colored hair and pink eyes. Next to him was an extremely buff man with unruly black hair and gray eyes. He was smoking a cigarette. He seemed a bit more relaxed than the others. Rena also recognized the symbol on his cape. That must be the Black Bulls captain. There was one other man who was a little more full than the others, with a pale green handlebar mustache.
“The magic knight captains are here!” Rena heard a girl say.
“They’re kinda overwhelming, huh?” another girl said.
Not really. Rena thought to herself. Just then someone else stepped up to take the remaining seat. He started to speak.
He was giving his little monologue that Rena wasn’t really paying attention to. She was looking around trying to gauge what type of magic she should use. It seemed everyone in this world only used one type of magic. She was broken out of her trance when the sky suddenly went dark and a large tree reached down. Giving everyone a wooden broom. The exam had started and applicants were attempting to fly on the brooms. Is this..Harry Potter?
Rena had removed her hood but kept her cloak on. While she wanted to make a good impression she did not want to overwhelm them with her magical power. She decided to go with her air magic. Seemed simple enough to blend in and it’d help with this first test of flying on the broom. She started to fly on the broom like everyone else. She started feeling excited about the following test. This was fun!
The exam finally came to its conclusion and Rena could tell she made an impression, but not too much to stand out. They were calling each applicant to reveal if they passed or not. If they passed then whichever squad wanted them would come forward. A few had more than one so they were allowed to pick. Since Rena was a ‘last minute entry’ she was the last one to be called up. When she walked up the squad captains all stared at her with a strange look.
“Number 176, we need you to come with us.” The captain that had the tree magic said with an odd tone in his voice.
Rena heard whispers coming from around her. Was this not normal? She followed an attendant through a set of doors leading to a staircase. Once up the stairs she was led into a room where all of the captains sat at a rectangular table. There was a kid sitting at the head of the table and another man standing behind him. Everyone was glaring at her strangely except the kid at the head of the table. Rena was feeling a bit awkward.
“Um, Did I do something wrong?” she asked timidly.
“Well, not exactly.” the kid said, “But we would like to know why you joined the exam.”
“I joined because I want to be a magic knight.” She answered.
“Could you tell us what type of magic you use?” he asked in return.
“Elemental magic. Well specifically air magic.” she stumbled. Shoot.
“Hmm, is that so? May I see your grimoire?” he asked, smirking a little.
“Um sure,” she handed her book over.
He started to examine the book before setting it on the table. He rested his elbows on the table and rested his hands under his chin. “Say, which kingdom are you from?”
“Wh-which Kingdom am I from? This one obviously.” She said with a twitch of her eyebrow.
“And which Kingdom is this?” he asked, with a creepy, eyes closed grin.
“The clover kingdom?” it came out as a question.
“Then, why is your grimoire missing the clover symbol?” He opened his eyes and dropped his smile.
Oh no. This can't be good. “Um..” she stuttered but couldn’t make a response.
The man behind the kid frowned and pointed towards Rena “Arrest her!”
“No Wait! I can explain!” She yelped frantically.
“Please do, I would hate to put a wielder of such interesting magic behind bars.” The kid said.
“Interesting magic? You think my magic is interesting?” She asked, confused. Who is this kid?
“Well of course!” He then did some sort of magic and her book turned back into a staff. “Because this grimoire is not a grimoire. You use magic without one do you not?” Everyone gasped in shock and started to whisper.
Seriously, what is up with this kid? “Um.. I…It's.. Complicated?” She said questionable.
The man behind the kid spoke up in an authoritative tone. “You will answer the Wizard King's questions or you will be arrested under suspicion that you are a spy!”
Wizard King?! But He’s just a kid?! Right? She let out a sigh “I’m not a spy, but I am here on business. Would I be able to speak to the Wizard King alone? Oh um and also the captain of the Black Bulls?”
“What do you need with the Black Bulls?” The man wearing a mask that led the exam asked.
“HA! Must be important if she wants to talk to me.” The muscular man said.
“That seems rather suspicious,” The man with a braid in his face sneered.
“Hey! It’s alright. Everyone you may leave. Yami you stay.” the kid said.
“Sir, I’m not sure that’s a good idea. We have no idea who she is and she displayed a good amount of power in the exam but I feel that she was actually holding back.” the man with a blue bowl hairstyle whispered into the Wizard King’s ear.
“Oh Marx, I’ll be fine!” He said with a wide smile. “Now everyone out! It seems our guest is a little shy.”
With that everyone shuffled out leaving just Rena, Yami, and the Wizard King.
