Warnings: Character Death, slightly graphic
“Come out, come out, wherever you are, Rena~. It’s time for your big reveal. I’m sure everyone is dying to know who Sy is to you.” He sneered, his voice dripping with malice.
V, let me switch, please. I need to get her back.
But Blaine… Rena, his emotions, everything coming back to him at once like that…
I know but please, I need to get Sy back.
Ok… please hurry, but be careful. Something doesn’t seem right with the way he’s grinning.
Nothing ever does…
Rena’s hair turned back to brown as she stood up, her eyes locking onto Odysseus. As she did, Aether stepped in, holding Blaine, trying to calm him from the overwhelming emotions crashing over him.
Odysseus rolled his eyes at the sight of Blaine whimpering on the ground. “So pathetic, Javaraya. And you’re the Guardian of Death. Look at you, being comforted by the other Guardians.”
Rena’s glare could have cut through steel. “Shut up. He is not pathetic. He may have made mistakes, but he paid his price tenfold.”
“Psht, as if. He committed the ultimate taboo, and all he got was his emotions stripped? That’s not paying the price, that’s running away. But enough about him, moving on to your little sin. I’ll give you one… last… chance. Who is she to you?” His grin grew even more sinister.
“No,” she replied sternly, her voice unwavering.
“Fine, fine, we will just have to make this more fun.” He turned towards Sy, grabbing her chains and yanking her up. He looked down at her, “Well then, shall I spill it or should you?”
She spat in his face. “She doesn’t know, she doesn’t need to know.”
“She doesn’t, does she? She looks rather determined to keep it a secret though. I’d say she already knows, or at least has an idea.” He smirked, looking up at Rena.
Sy looked towards Rena, and Rena gave her a soft, reassuring look. “No…” Sy whispered, “You weren’t… supposed to know.” Tears started to form in the corners of her eyes.
“She wasn’t supposed to know? Well, I don’t know how she found out, but I’ll tell you how we uncovered the secret that will change this fight.”
Odysseus started to laugh, “Oh Rena… Rena. Rena. Rena. You made a vital mistake. Honestly, why they picked you to go up against me, I’ll never understand. Do you want to know where you went wrong?”
Rena just glared back at him, not saying a word.
“In that world, full of Heroes, where we first faced off, do you remember?” He asked.
She continued to stay silent, not wanting to play into his little game.
He chuckled at her defiance and continued. “You were taken to Kage’s lab, where he just so happened upon a vial of your blood. You humans are so interesting. So much can be learned from your blood, the information it carries. Well, when we took in your little pet here, we drew some of hers too. Then the unexpected happened. A small little beep came from his equipment. A beep confirming a match. Confirming who she is to you in a matter of seconds. It’s funny, we weren’t even searching for it, but there it was, plain as day. Your weakness. Sy… is your biological daughter.”
Rena flinched, ever so slightly, but remained silent.
“No response, huh? So you did know. Perfect, this next part will be so… much… fun…” he grinned as he pushed Sy towards Rena. She tumbled and fell to the ground.
“You know, I don’t find your silence amusing. Come on, dear Rena, you’ve got to give me something. I’m giving you your little pet back. Your daughter. So sweet how she came from the future to help you stop me, all for what? You to fail miserably.” He walked up behind Sy, who was too stunned to move.
She looked up at Rena and whispered through her tears, “I’m so sorry, Rena.”
~Flashback~
Rena was in Sy’s office. She had just had some intense training with Aether on her elements. She had finally mastered all the core elements so they were ready to move on to the stronger combinations. She needed the distraction after learning about her childhood friend’s disappearance.
Sy had stepped out to have Aether and Aviv help her with something so Rena was just taking a break in her office. She was looking around at everything when she noticed a folder on Sy’s computer titled “confidential”.
“Was this what she was worried the hacker was trying to steal?”
Curiosity getting the best of her, she clicked the folder and saw files with people’s names. She had a file of everyone, the guardians, Rena, the Fairy Tail members, the heroes, and even one for herself.
“Why would Sy have a file for herself in here?”
Rena clicked on it and began to read.
“ ‘Em., Sybil R.’ Is Em her last name or is it short for something?”
She continued to read..
“Birthday - April 11th, xx18
Mother - Serena Amara Reyes.”
Rena froze. She just stared at her name on the screen. “Wha–” before she could continue Sy walked back into the office, causing Rena to close the folder in a panic.
“Rena, Aether is ready for you if you want to continue your training.”
“OH! Perfect!” Rena squeaked.
“Are you ok Rena?” Sy looked up, concerned.
“Ah yes, sorry, just excited to learn more elements.” Rena covered her mishap, “Well I better be off, Find the next guardian soon, k?” She said as she quickly left the office, leaving Sy slightly confused at her strange behavior.
As Rena walked away, she continued to think about what she saw on the file. “Is she really my daughter? She must be from the future then. Is that why she knows so much? Wait, who would I even have a daughter with? Or is it a different me from a parallel world?”
“I saw it on your computer, in the folder that had everyone’s information in it. I was curious why you would have a file for yourself, so I opened it. That’s… how I found out.” Rena explained.
“When? When did you—” Sy started, but Rena interrupted her.
“Three months ago, well I guess it was longer since I was missing for four months after that.” Rena sighed.
“Yes, and in those months you were missing, we apprehended your pet here. Trying to get answers as to where the guardians were hiding, but she refused to tell us anything. Quite the rude houseguest if you ask me.” Odysseus mocked, stepping closer to Sy, who was still on the ground.
“Why don’t you get up, go back to your mother’s arms,” he taunted, his voice dripping with venom as he kicked her forward, a cruel grin spreading across his face.
Sy struggled to her feet, her body trembling with pain and fear. She took a hesitant step towards Rena, then another, each one feeling like a lifetime. The air grew thick with tension, every heartbeat echoing like a drum. Suddenly, Blaine shot up, his eyes wide with panic. “NO! WAIT! DON’T—” he screamed, his voice cracking with desperation as he reached out, but it was too late.
Sy took one final step, just an arm’s length away from Rena. Their eyes met, a silent exchange of relief and anticipation. In that moment, a sickening whoosh cut through the air. Time seemed to slow as Sy’s eyes widened in shock, her body freezing mid-step. “No… Please forgive me…” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Rena’s heart pounded in her chest, confusion and dread washing over her. “Sy, what’s wron—” The words died in her throat as Sy’s body crumpled to the ground. The world seemed to slow as Rena watched in horror, her breath catching as Sy’s head rolled to her feet.
“S-Sy… n-no… no no no… P-please… S-Sy… you… can’t…” Rena’s voice broke, her cries filled with anguish and disbelief. She dropped to her knees, her hands trembling as she reached out to touch Sy’s lifeless form.
Odysseus loomed over them, his eyes glowing a malevolent red, Death’s scythe gleaming in his hand. He snarled, his voice a chilling whisper. “I said I’d give her back… I never said alive.”
