“Everything needs to be perfect. She deserves perfection,” Clark muttered, pacing back and forth in the chapel.
“I know, honey, but things happen that we can’t always plan for. Besides, you seem to be freaking out more than she is,” his mother said, trying to comfort him.
“Thanks, Mom, but… I just… She’s been through so much. And we’ve waited so long. I just want everything to be perfect.”
“Careful there, son, you sound like a bridezilla,” his father grumbled.
“More like a groomzilla,” Blake said, leaning back in a chair with one leg draped over the armrest.
“You know, Blake, I’m starting to regret asking you to be my best man,” Clark sighed.
“Ah, you love me and you know it.”
“Mmhm… well, that is unfortunate… Is there really no one you can send?” Clark heard his father on the phone.
The wedding officiant had passed away from a heart attack just hours before the wedding.
Clark looked to his mother, “Mom, what are we going to do?”
“I’m sure it will work out. Maybe one of the guests has a license?” his mom suggested.
“It’s a small guest list, I doubt there’s anyone that could fill in,” Clark said sadly.
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. The group looked at each other, confused, as they weren’t expecting anyone. The wedding was due to start in 20 minutes, so everyone should be in their designated spots.
Clark’s mother opened the door and immediately was flustered. “Oh my, well hello! How may we help you, young man?”
“Young man? Well, thank you for the compliment, ma’am.” A tall man dressed in an all-black suit bowed. He had snow-white hair and ruby-red eyes. He looked around the room, made eye contact with Clark, and smiled. “I heard you might require an officiant.”
“Oh, um. Yes, we do, but we seem to be having trouble finding one last minute,” Clark said, confused by the familiarity of the stranger in the doorway.
“Well, I just so happen to be one. My name is Blaine, and I would love to marry this beautiful couple today if you would allow?” the man said, looking back at Clark’s mother.
“Oh, that would be wonderful! You are an angel! See, honey! I knew it would work out!” Clark’s mother exclaimed.
“Well, I wouldn’t say I’m an angel,” Blaine chuckled.
“I suppose it’s better than canceling the wedding. Thank you, sir,” Clark said, feeling the stress of the event lessen a little at this small miracle.
“It’s my pleasure,” Blaine said with a slight bow.
“How much do we owe you for your services, sir?” Clark’s father asked, getting his checkbook out.
“Oh, no need for that. I’m happy to do it, free of charge. My wife is a hopeless romantic, and she would love to watch the ceremony. That would be all the payment needed.”
“Well, it’s settled then,” Clark’s mom said with a clap of her hands. “She can sit on the bride’s side! Speaking of, I’m going to go check on her.” She gave Clark one last smile and left the room.
“Well then, I’ll head to give my wife the good news. I’ll be waiting for you at the altar. Oh, as your officiant, I mean,” Blaine awkwardly chuckled as he headed out.
“Well, that’s certainly odd timing, but I suppose it’s a good thing he came along when he did. I wonder how he heard about our situation,” Clark’s father said as he fixed his suit in the mirror. “Well, son, it’s almost time. Are you ready?”
Clark gulped, “As ready as I’ll ever be.”
The men walked out of the room and headed for the main chapel.
The bride’s song started to play, and Rena’s stomach jumped into her throat. Why am I so nervous? This is the happiest day of my life! Come on! It’s our song. Just walk down there like you did in rehearsal yesterday.
“You look absolutely radiant, miss! You’ll do fine. Once you step through those doors, just look for your love’s eyes. They will guide you and calm your soul,” a woman’s voice said, reaching Rena’s ears.
She looked up and saw the most beautiful woman she had ever seen. She had golden blonde hair and eyes as blue as the sea. Rena suddenly felt calmer.
“Thank you, Miss…?”
“Venus,” the woman said with a smile.
“Thank you, Miss Venus. I think I’m ready now,” she said, smiling back and stepping up to the door.
Once she stepped through, she felt all eyes on her. She gulped down the lump in her throat but quickly caught the eyes of her one true love who was waiting for her.
The expression on his face was magnificent. He was clearly in awe of his bride walking down the aisle. She was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. His emerald eyes glistened in the light.
She finally reached the altar, and he offered his hand, guiding her up the stairs.
“You two ready?” Blaine whispered.
“Mmhm.” “Yes,” they whispered back.
Blaine nodded. “Ladies and Gentlemen, we are gathered here today…”
