"So what's it going to be, doll?" he sneered. A menacing grin pulling at the staples of his face. His partner behind him looking less than interested.
Rena smirked, considering her options, she felt there was only one way out of this alleyway… alive. "Fine. You have a deal. I was bored anyway and from what I've seen you guys have tons of fun."
The man smiled and leaned off the wall he had pinned Rena against. "Smart choice. We do have lots of fun." he chuckled. "Give me your number."
"What for?" Rena raised an eyebrow in curiosity.
"Going to need to contact you somehow sweetheart." He grinned as he handed Rena his phone.
She took it and held it up to her phone transferring the information. Handing it back to the man, she noticed his confused expression. "What? Jealous of my fancy tech?" she smirked.
"Nah I don't do fancy. Just surprised is all. Where did you say you were from again?" he asked.
"I didn't but frankly it doesn't matter. I ran away. That place sucked. Too many stuckups wanting to be praised for doing a good job. Makes me sick. So I stole some of their stuff and left the country. Heard about you guys so thought I'd give it a shot here." Rena rambled, hoping her vague story would be believable.
There was an awkward silence as the man stared at her trying to gauge her story. After what seemed like an eternity he turned and said "Let's go," and his quiet companion turned to follow him out of the alleyway.
He paused for a moment before looking over his shoulder, his eyes glowing a dangerous blue. "Remember princess, you belong to the League of Villains now. I trust you'll follow my instructions. Prove to me that oversized chicken is a traitor. Otherwise, you'll wish you stayed in that boring past of yours." Then two men disappeared into the crowded street.
Rena breathed a sigh of relief as she leaned against the wall before she felt her knees give out and collapse to the ground.
"How'd this even happen?" she whispered to herself.
~Earlier that day~
Rena was walking in a park close to a temple she had just visited. She sat down and enjoyed some Japanese street food she had picked up along the way. After the awkward morning with both Hawks and Sy, Rena had gone out to do some sightseeing to keep her mind from drifting. She needed a distraction and what else was she going to do while Sy got her set up with a "Job".
Rena didn't know much about how this world worked. There were Heroes with superpowers called quirks that would protect the citizens from villains that also had superpowers. Could she really pass off her magic as a quirk? How would working under a hero agency work? And what about the other option? Teaching at a school? Rena was smart, top of her class, and probably the biggest nerd at her school, which is why she didn't have friends. But could she teach a bunch of high school kids?
She sighed as she finished her food, realizing that it was getting late and she had not heard anything from Sy. "Guess I better head back," she mumbled to herself as she stood up and began the long walk back to her hotel.
She didn't notice a pair of teal eyes following her as she walked past two people when she left the park.
The man with the teal eyes turned and watched Rena walk out of the park. His face began to twitch as he smiled underneath the mask he wore to hide his face.
"Well, what do we have here? Looks like a lost tourist seems to be wandering the streets. We better help the poor girl." he spoke out loud to himself.
The man who was with him looked up from his phone. "What did you say? We need to be getting to the lab. I need to analyze these samples." he said, slightly annoyed.
"We're taking a little detour. I need to check something." the man with the mask said to his partner.
"Ugh just make it fast. We're wasting precious time." the other man said as he followed his partner who had already walked off, following Rena.
Rena was about halfway back to her hotel, lost in thought. She sent Sy a message asking if she'd heard anything from the agency or the school. No answer. Feeling a little lonely she decided to see if Versa was awake.
V? You there?
No answer.
Of course not. Seems like something is blocking her power and she used too much of it. She'll probably be asleep for a while again.
Rena let out a sigh, feeling a bit down, she was oblivious to the two shadows creeping up on her. She stopped walking for a moment to look in the window of a shop she was passing. She was focused on her reflection, blurring out the reflections of those passing her by.
Then she noticed something. Two people weren't moving, she moved her eyes to focus on the reflection to lock eyes with someone. She couldn't make out who it was. They were wearing a black jacket with a hoodie over their head and a black mask covering their face. Someone was standing behind them with a white coat and goggles on top of their hair. Wait.. That's.. Rena's eyes went wide and she quickly turned around only to be met with nothing but people walking by.
"I could have sworn I saw… Ugh, never mind. That stuff only happens in movies." She whispered to herself as she turned to continue her walk back.
Just as she was passing an alleyway, a hand reached out covering her mouth, the other grabbing her waist, locking her arms against her body, and pulled her into the dark, cramped alley. She could feel someone holding her against their chest. Cliché.
"Don't scream or I'll give you a reason too, understand?" a man's voice spoke from behind her. She nodded and he removed his hand from her mouth.
"Good girl," he said with a slight condescending tone. Rena felt the man step back and she turned around only to be quickly pinned against a wall. She flinched, squeezing her eyes closed momentarily as she caught her breath.
She opened them to lock them on the man who was harassing her. She saw his eyes and realized he was who she saw in the reflection. She suddenly looked past him and saw his partner. Sure enough there he was, ashy hair, goggles, white lab coat, a horribly disinterested look on his face, and in his hand.. A briefcase. It's him! That scientist-looking dude from the mansion! Wait, that means… she looked to the man who was pinning her against the wall, recognizing that eye color.
"Dabi…" she said flatly, dropping the surprised look on her face for one of annoyance.
He chuckled as he moved his mask down revealing his face "Looks like you're a smart one, doll."
Rena chuckled nervously "You know, I said I was interested in the League, not that I was interested in you. So what's with this cliché alleyway, wall pinning motif?"
Dabi chuckled and leaned back a little. His hands, still on the wall to either side of Rena's head. "Oh, you don't need to worry about that sweetheart. You're not my type. Anyway, I see Hawks didn't do his job."
"Hawks?" Rena tried to play innocent.
Dabi dropped his smirk. "The oversized bird? He was supposed to get rid of you. Not let you walk the streets after seeing our hideout."
"Oversized bird… OH, Stalker guy?! Yeah, he probably shouldn't go by Hawks cause he's definitely not as sharp as one. It was so easy to sweet talk him into letting me go." She smiled.
Dabi was silent for a moment before he started to grin. "Say, you were lurking around because you wanted to join us, is that right?"
Rena gulped, I have a bad feeling about this. "Yeah, and I have to say I still am. So are you going to let me join or not?"
Dabi's smirk grew wider. Rena was concerned his staples were going to pop. "Fine. I'll let you join. But I need you to do something for me."
Renas' curiosity peaked. "Oh? What could you possibly want with me?" she smirked.
Dabi leaned in, glaring his eyes into Renas. "Spy on Hawks for us. Tell me his movements. We have him monitored but I still don't trust him. I'm sure he's found a way around those. It seems like he might have a soft spot for 'lost little American tourists' though. Do that, and I'll let you join."
Rena paused, thinking about her choice. She glanced between Dabi and the scientist behind him. Dabi noticed and dropped his grin. He moved a hand to light a blue flame in front of Rena, bringing her attention back to him.
"Not much to be considering. Don't take my offer and I'll make due on my threat to give you a reason to scream." he snarled. "So what's it going to be, doll?"
Rena was trying to will herself to stand. This was her second encounter with the villain Dabi. She was surprised she made it out unscathed minus her nerves. She was still on the ground when she snapped out of her trance as her phone started vibrating. She breathed in counting to 5, then released as she counted to 10, bringing herself back from wherever she had disappeared to.
Please be Sy. Surely she's heard something by now.
Unknown number: Remember the deal, princess. I expect to hear something by the day after tomorrow. Give me something good and you'll be invited to the mansion. If not, 🔥 ️
Guess I should tell Sy I got forced into undercover work. I suddenly feel like Hawks. This is going to suck. I hope we can get this over with quickly. Also, a villain using emoji… that's hilarious.
Rena finally got up and dusted herself off, making her way out of the alleyway that no one seemed to notice she was dragged into. So much for a society full of heroes… no one bothered to help a foreigner being dragged into an alleyway. She sighed as she finished her walk back to the hotel.
