Fans are saying that we should pass a law in honour of Liam Payne's passing on Wednesday 16th October 2024. This law would be nicknamed "Liam's Law" and would ensure that professionals in the entertainment industry (musicians, singers, actors, etc.) would have access to mental health support and that the entertainment industry would be blamed if an artist had a problem.
Personally, I think this is a good law. I signed the petition on Change.org, and I'll link it down below. Singers and actors go through a lot of pressure to release their songs or movies on time, and the industry is incredibly toxic to so many people. No wonder celebrities can never seem to manage the fame.
And some fans are completely crazy. Loving someone as an idol is one thing. Stalking that person and acting like you know them when you don't is another. We do not know these people personally. We know what has been shown to us, and that is why fans exist. We love the people that we see, but what if those people are just made up?
An example would be Liam. Everyone thought he was the most responsible one in 1D, but he's the one who has taken drugs the most and that resulted in his death. Not very responsible, right? That's because I bet it's their management which gave a role to every boy and they had to stay in it. Liam probably felt too pressured to be responsible, and besides, the number of fans that 1D had before they broke up was crazy. Some people just can't handle the fame. And Liam James Payne was one of them.
I don't blame him. I blame the industry. They went so hard on those five boys, and they were definitely at least a bit exploited. Zayn had an eating disorder and major anxiety issues as a result of the pressure. Liam obviously turned towards drugs and alcohol to vent his frustrations on. Two out of five. And we don't know if Louis, Niall and Harry had other problems, but they must have had some.
Liam's Law would protect other artists from the downside of fame, or at least try to protect them. It can't do any harm to pass a law that protects the interests of celebrities, right? After all, they might be famous, but they're still people just like you and me. They want a normal life, and even though they're famous, people should respect their privacy and not intrude on it.
I think Liam never got over being exploited in One Direction. I think he had problems with drugs and alcohol for longer than we were led to believe. I think he was right to blame management, and not right to blame the boys, but then again, were we ever there? No. So if you disagree with my last statement, don't come after me, okay?
My point is, we must protect people's mental health. Everyone is making such a big deal out of mental health, and yet we ignore it when the time comes to actually do something. Newspapers are always going on about World Mental Health Day and stuff like that, and then promptly post stories on how this celebrity slept with this person? Like, don't they realise how horrible it must be, to be reading articles like that when you're the person mentioned?
Let's protect celebrities. Let's make sure Liam Payne's death isn't in vain.
