Yesterday night I went to see Dear Evan Hansen and it was so good.
For those of you who have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about, Dear Evan Hansen is a Broadway musical that originally premiered in 2015. It's about a guy named Evan Hansen who enters high school and who has serious social anxiety. His therapist tells him to write himself a letter every day because Evan is a good writer. So Evan on the first day decides to do that. He meets another guy called Connor Murphy who is seriously fucked up and takes drugs and who also has no friends. But Evan crushes over Connor's sister Zoe. In Evan's letter, there is Zoe's name, and Connor accidentally reads the letter. He gets mad and takes the letter.
Later, Evan discovers that Connor has committed suicide, and had Evan's letter in his pocket. Connor's parents believe that the note was actually written by Connor, and so chaos ensues, including everyone thinking that Evan was Connor's best friend.
It changed from those really happy and upbeat musicals that everyone likes, like Mamma Mia! or even Footloose. As a musical nerd myself, it was really good. It was advised for 16 and above, but of course it's one of my favourite musicals ever, so I didn't even care.
Like, it talks about suicide and feeling invisible. They might be triggering topics, but they're topics that actually happen in real life, not some crazy love story about two childhood friends or enemies to lovers kind of trope. It's a musical that depicts real life and mental health problems, and I'm all for it.
Now, you might be thinking why I'm talking about it. To make you all go see it, of course!
You don't even need to go see it live. You can see it online. For anyone who's interested, it's seriously my favourite musical ever. Anyway, I don't have enough time because Johanna is begging me to make a cake, so I think I have to go quite soon.
If you're a musical nerd, don't hesitate to comment down below what your favourite musical is!
Signing out,
