Rena just stared at the empty space where Ryker had just been. She was usually a calm person but something was creeping up the back of her spine. Anger.
“That bastard!” she yelled as she gripped her baton so tight her knuckles were turning white.
Vanessa approached her and placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. “Hey, it’s alright. You kept us safe. He didn’t hurt anyone.”
“No, but he got away. Again. This chase is getting so old. He pisses me off so much.” Rena gritted through her teeth.
“Yes but your power is extraordinary! I’m sure you’ll beat him next time, no matter what he says.” She answered calmly.
Her words calmed Mystic down and she released her magic, changing back into her crop top and pants. She turned to face the rest of the black bulls and offered a smile.
“Sorry to bring a mess to your front door, but he won’t be back.” She assured them, but turned her face away in disappointment.
“So, you gonna explain to us what all that was?” Zora said as he stood with his hands in his pockets.
Rena looked over at him, seeing the determination on his face, or that’s what she assumed it was. It could just be that his face looked like that.
Letting out a sigh she agreed, but decided it’d be better to go inside and sit down.
The group went inside and gathered around the couch. All attention was on Rena as she explained everything.
“Wait, you’re from another world?!” Vanessa exclaimed.
“Yes,” Rena answered simply.
“You knew about this, Captain?” Zora asked, annoyed.
“Yeah, I knew. Julius had Marx look at her memories. So I let her join the squad. Seemed like it’d be entertaining.” Yami laughed.
“Glad I could be a source of entertainment.” Rena chuckled a little.
“So what will you do now?” Vanessa asked.
“Well it’s time for me to go back. I set out to stop Ryker and that’s what I did. It would have been better to bring him back but that sneaky bastard escaped.” She sighed.
She may have won the fight but he still managed to leave her looking like a failure, or so she thought to herself. It was really getting to her for some reason. She was so much stronger, so why?
“That’s a shame. We could use someone as strong as you to defeat the Spade kingdom.” Yami grunted.
“I know but I can’t, I’m sorry. I’m on a much bigger mission. This was just a small battle in the midst of a war.” She sighed.
“A war?” Finral asked surprised.
“Yes, its a lot to explain. Actually, my partner might want to brief you on the situation.” Rena said as she pulled her phone out to call Sy.
“Whoa! What’s that?” Asta asked.
“Oh, remember how I said we use technology in my world. This is one of the items. It’s called a cell phone. It allows me to talk to people far away. Sort of like that device Yami and Finral used to contact each other. It can do many other things as well though.”
“So cool~” he beamed.
Rena just chuckled as she called Sy, not noticing the multiple text messages from a certain hero.
“Mystic, how is the mission going?” Sy answered.
“Well, we were right. Ryker was after the swords but he’s been delt with. I captured him and was going to bring him back but he escaped. Sorry.” Rena said with a sigh.
“That’s alright. Did he seem to give up or do you think he will try again?” Sy asked.
“I don’t think he will try again.”
“That’s good. Are you still with the Black Bulls?”
“Yes, should we bring them back with us?” Rena asked.
“Yes. I’d like to brief them on the situation as we have with the others. Are you ready now?”
Rena looked up at the members that were there, “There are a few here–” a sudden crash through the doors startled everyone. They all looked to the source of the commotion.
“Owie. That hurt,” the woman cried as she pushed herself up off the ground.
“Elowen?! What are you doing here?” Rena gasped.
“Huh? Who’s this?” Yami raised an eyebrow in confusion.
“She’s a dryad from the strong magic region of the heart kingdom. She trained the spirit guardians.” Finral answered.
“Mysticcc~darling~” the guardian cried as she ran arms open towards Rena, almost knocking her down as she held onto her. “I changed my mind. Can I come with you? I want to see Aether.”
“Mystic, what’s going on?” Sy asked.
“Oh um, well actually I happened to meet a lower guardian. One under Aether.” Rena smiled.
“Really? Well bring her along!” Sy said excitedly.
Rena chuckled a little, looking at the group “Well, how would you guys like to take a mini trip?”
“What about our training?” Noelle asked.
Now Rena was grinning, “We can have you back to this exact moment in time. So it will be like you never left.”
“Wait really?!” Asta asked with stars in his eyes. Seriously, does this kid just live with his eyes like that?
“Yes really. Well let’s get going. You too Elowen.” she said looking down at the dryad wrapped around her waist.
“WAIT! Mystic! You’re injured! Let me heal that for you before we go.” Elowen said as she hovered her hands over Rena’s leg, a warm yellow light emitting from them. Rena had forgotten Ryker bit her leg when he was in his cheetah form. Once she was done she looked up and smiled. “Ok let’s go! I can’t wait to see Lady Aether!”
“Alright. Sy, we’re ready.” Rena smiled as a glow surrounded the group.
There was a flash of light and suddenly the group was in Sy’s lab. It took everyone a moment to adjust to the light but soon they were all looking around in awe. Rena turned her head to Sy but saw someone else standing next to her, a cheeky smirk plastered on his face.
“Hawks!? What are you doing here?” Rena was surprised to see the winged hero, excited, but surprised.
He gave her his signature cocky smile. Sy just rolled her eyes.
“He insisted on being here when you got back. He wanted it to be a surprise.” She groaned.
“Well it definitely is a surprise. Why are you here though?” She asked.
He strolled up and wrapped her in a hug, “Cause I missed you kid!”
“Hawks…” Rena said in a warning tone.
“Whoops! I can’t help it sometimes.” He laughed as he stepped back, putting his hands in his pockets. “But also you were ignoring my texts, Mystie.” he pouted.
“Oh..I didn’t mean to...sorry. But seriously, what are you doing here?”
“Ah well, when I finally got Dabi to tell me where Kage was he told me he left with Ryker, 3 weeks prior. When I let Sy know, she told me about your mission and how it might be a trap. I got worried because of what happened last time so I wanted to make sure you were ok. Sy wouldn’t let me come find you though. She made me wait.” He explained, grumbling the last part.
“That’s because you can’t just stroll into another world. Also it’s a world of magic not quirks. You’d be way out of place. Especially with your wings, they’d think you were a devil,” Sy explained, annoyed.
“Well I am a devil, devilishly handsome. Anyway, I’m glad you made it back safely.” He said ruffling Rena's head.
“Thanks. For worrying about me.” She said quietly.
“I’m always gonna worry about you. You get yourself into too much trouble and have a record of walking into traps.” He joked, looking behind Rena at the new faces.
“So, these are your new friends?” He said leaning on her shoulder.
“Yeah, these are the Black Bulls. Well some of them anyway.” She said with a smile. Hawks was happy to see her smiling again.
“Are you going to introduce us to this devilishly handsome guy, Mystic?” Vanessa said with a wink.
“Oh! Sorry, this is Hawks!” Rena said, pointing up at the hero.
“Heyo! I’m her best friend.” He said, throwing up a peace sign with a smirk.
“Ooh~ best friend huh?” Vanessa wiggles her eyebrows insinuating something.
Rena waved her hands “Whoa not like Vanessa, were just friends.”
Hawks got the hint too and smiled “Yeah, just friends. Besides, she’s already got a special someone.”
Rena flinched when he said that and Hawks noticed. He looked down and realized he might have touched a nerve. “Ah, sorry if–”
“It’s fine. Um excuse me a moment. I just remembered I wanted to talk to Aether. Can you take over from here Sy?” Rena said rather quickly, ducking out from Hawks arm.
She walked out and the atmosphere got a little awkward. Hawks looked towards Sy “Did… I say something wrong?”
She let out a sigh “She didn’t tell you then?”
“Tell me what?” he said as he crossed his arms.
“When she visited her home to deal with the aftermath of the accident the police were asking her questions about her father. It was brought up that her father was seen with Clark, her childhood friend, a few times. The last time they were seen together there was an argument. Clark has been missing ever since. In her world, that was 18 months ago.” Sy explains.
Hawks eyes grew to the size of saucers as his arms dropped to his side “Shit. No, she didn’t tell me. She said she got some rough news but that she was fine.” He looked in the direction she walked off too.
“It’s a delicate situation. She wants to hang onto hope, and frankly she should because… They will meet again,” Sy smiled lightly but it faded as she continued “But one can only do so much when faced with misleading information.”
Hawks snapped his head back “Wait, they really will meet again? How do you know?”
Realizing she had said too much Sy quickly tried avoiding the question “Uh, I have the gift of clairvoyance so I’ve seen a few visions of them together. Anyway, I’d like to thank you magic knights for helping Mystic while she was in your squad. I know it was a strange situation but thank you nonetheless.”
“It was nothing really! I’m not sure why that guy wanted my swords but if Mystic hadn’t been there to stop him there’s no telling what he would have done. Plus seeing her magic power was so awesome!” Asta said.
“It’s a shame she can’t stay. We could really use a power like hers against the spade kingdom.” Yami said.
“I know, but she can’t be involved in major events of your world. It would disrupt the timeline and cause disastrous problems. We are only making these trips to other worlds to stop the uncanon events from disturbing the natural order.” Sy regretfully stated.
“I’m going to go check on Mystic,” Hawks said, excusing himself.
“Thanks, Hawks.” Sy said. She then turned back to the Black Bulls. “Now then, I’d like to explain to you the situation in more detail..” Sy began.
