The two sat there in silence for a moment.
“Well? Are you going to explain to me what is happening or not? I’m not really a patient man,” Law said, crunching his eyebrows in annoyance.
“Ah, sorry. I was trying to think of where to begin and how best to tell you. It might be easier if I just show you,” Versa replied, her voice steady.
“Show me?” Law asked, intrigued.
“I can show you memories. My memories, to be exact. But in return, I need a favor.”
“Oh? And what might that be?” Law inquired, his curiosity piqued.
“Tell me… If you can see souls, can you also move them? More specifically… remove them?” Versa asked, her tone serious.
“Theoretically… yes. I’ve switched souls between bodies, but I’ve never tried removing one,” he said with a smirk.
“I like you to try and remove mine from her body, but we can get to that in a moment. First the …” Versa stood up and moved towards Law. “To do this, I’m going to place my hand on your head, and my memories will flow through your mind. Can you remove your hat?”
Law removed his hat and placed it on the table. Versa reached for his head, but before she could, the door from the kitchen swung open, and there stood Sanji with a tray of food and a glass of water.
“Rena-chwann~ I brought something… to… cheer…” Sanji’s jaw dropped to the floor along with the tray. “She really is an angel,” he whispered to himself as he fell to the floor, blood spewing from his nose.
“Tch. Fucking idiot,” Law whispered to himself.
Versa paused for a moment. “Maybe we should let everyone know.” She shook her head. “But later. I’ll give you all the information, and then we can decide what to tell the rest.”
She placed her hand on Law’s forehead, and suddenly his mind was filled with Versa’s memories. He saw the trial, how Versa escaped, how she met a younger Rena and how Rena let her in. The first meeting they had with Sy and her explanation of all the gadgets. A few memories of Rena’s adventures in other worlds, saving people and them joining the fight to stop the mad guardian. The last memory he saw was the dream Rena had told him about, though this was a bit more detailed. After Versa had shown Law all the memories she deemed relevant, she removed her hand. Law sat there in silence, eyes wide, processing everything he just saw. It answered a lot of questions, but they were just replaced with others. The guardians? Other worlds? I had a feeling she was from another world, and this confirms it. But this is just insane.
“Fuck,” Law said as he sat back, his hand moving up to his head as he ran his fingers through his hair.
“It’s a lot. I know. But with Rena’s memories gone, it’s posing a very difficult problem,” Versa said, her voice tinged with concern.
“I understand,” Law replied, his tone more serious.
“So about that favor. My thought is that because I also reside in Rena, her memories are being blocked because mine are in the way. She’s not able to see them because I’m a guardian, but they are still causing a problem. If you… remove my soul, that would unbond us, and her memories should be able to flow back,” Versa explained.
Law pondered for a moment before posing a question. “Wouldn’t that reveal your presence to the enemy?”
Versa was silent for a moment before she replied. “Yes. It would, but I’m hoping Rena would be able to quickly recover, and we could bond once again before he can pinpoint our location.”
“Are you sure this will work?” Law asked, his voice filled with doubt.
Versa looked away. “No.” She turned back to Law. “But I don’t have much other choice, do I?”
“Hard to say. I’m not entirely sure I understand everything, but we can give it a shot. Lay on the bed, and let’s see what I can do,” Law said with a smirk, excited to try something new with his powers. He’s switched souls between bodies before but never has he just simply removed a soul. If this works, he’ll definitely keep this trick up his sleeve for future enemies. Specifically, for a pirate named Blackbeard, who he is planning on torturing relentlessly when he comes across him again.
Versa got on the bed and laid back into a comfortable position. This has to work, she thought to herself. I can’t do this without her. I can’t believe she got this seriously hurt, and it’s all my fault.
“Hey. I don’t know what’s going through your mind right now, but it might be best if we focus on the situation,” Law said as he raised his hand, ready to activate his room. Same goes for me… This woman needs my help. I don’t have time to dive into my sadistic side, however much I’m itching to right now. I may be the Surgeon of Death, but right now I’m this woman’s only hope of getting her memories back. It’s really unlike me, but something about her makes me want to help instead of hurt. I’ll save all my sadistic itching for when I come across Blackbeard again. He will pay for what he did to my crew and the Polar Tang. Law had unintentionally got lost in his own thoughts, and his face had twisted into a displeased frown.
“Um, Mr. Trafalgar? Are you alright?” Versa questioned, snapping Law back to reality.
“Yes. Sorry. Let’s get this started, shall we?” His hand was still raised, so he cleared his throat. “Roo—” but before he could activate his room, they were interrupted by a little reindeer scream.
“AHHH Sanji!! What happened?! We need a doctor quickly! Oh wait. I’m a doctor!” A few of the Straw Hats had come into the kitchen as lunch was supposed to be starting soon, and they wanted to check on Rena in the infirmary. They came in and saw Sanji on the ground in front of the infirmary door.
“I saw an angel~” Sanji muffled from the floor. Usopp and Luffy came over to help Sanji to his feet. Nami came up from behind and glanced into the room Law and Versa were in, noticing the change in Rena’s appearance.
“What’s going on? What happened to Rena?” she asked, her voice filled with concern.
Law’s face started to curl in frustration. “We’d gladly tell you if you can give us just a moment,” he growled as he slammed the door.
“No need to be so rude, Toraro,” Nami snapped.
“He doesn’t mean to be, Miss Nami. We just… He’s not himself right now because of what happened to us,” Bepo said as he moved into the kitchen behind them.
“Are you ever going to tell us what happened?” Nami questioned the bear.
“I’ll let Captain decide that. I’m sorry!” Bepo apologized.
Meanwhile in the infirmary, Law raised his hand again. “Let’s do this quick before those idiots interrupt again.” Versa nodded.
“Room. Shambles.”
It was strange. Normally when he performs his Personality-Transplant Operation, there are two souls and two bodies. Each has a place to go. But this time, he just pulled the soul out of the body. Surprisingly, it worked, and Versa’s soul popped out, encased in a transparent cube, and landed in Law’s hand.
“Interesting,” he said, smirking while inspecting the cube in his hand. He didn’t notice Versa’s astral form rise up and out of Rena’s body. She stood up in front of him and held out her hand.
“I believe that’s mine,” she said, eyeing the soul in Law’s hand.
His eyes widened at the sight of her and reluctantly handed her the soul. He was a little disappointed as he wanted to examine it more out of curiosity, but he could try again on someone else, now that he knew it would work.
“Thank you.” She turned to look at Rena. “I suppose we let her rest now and see what happens. I hope this works,” she said, turning back towards Law. “Now then… We should probably go tell your friends the situation.”
Law grimaced and turned his head. “They’re not my friends.”
Versa slightly giggled. “Yeah, sure.” She turned towards the door, but Law’s arm reached to stop her.
“Wait.” She looked up at him. “You should stay here with Rena-ya. We can tell them once she wakes up.”
“But why not tell them now?”
“Because they are idiots, and it might be more believable if Rena-ya is awake with her memories back,” Law reasoned.
Versa paused for a moment, then agreed. “I suppose you are right. But what will you tell them? A few of them definitely saw Rena in my form.”
“I’ll figure something out. For now, you stay here and watch over her.” He headed out the door and into the kitchen. Versa turned towards Rena and placed her hand on top of Rena’s.
“I’m so sorry, Rena,” she whispered.
