It was later that night, and I sat in the library about two blocks away from my house.
It was nice, honestly. Especially for a book nerd like me.
I could drive? I just didn't have a car. And it was sad, but I still came here.
Usually Neveah drove me places, or I just took my mom's car, but Neveah was tired after the arcade and mom as well as dad were gone on another business meeting.
I wasn't even slightly exhausted after the arcade; in fact, I'd never felt more awake in my life.
I just had nothing to do, and my mind was rushing. I needed something to do.
So when I was bored, I came here to do something other than thinking.
Sometimes—when I was entirely overwhelmed—I would come here to read a book on one of their comfortable couches, and I wouldn't stop reading until the book ended.
I was overwhelmed. That event with Sebastian scared me senseless, so I decided to do whatever I did when I was afraid...
And pretend it never happened.
It actually worked; believe it or not, and surprisingly, I wasn't as scared of Sebastian as I should've been.
He knew that I was having hallucinations... but he didn't know before which meant that he didn't know.
He shouldn't have been the cause of them.
I think I just needed to process things, and my brain was making me hallucinate to solve things. So I'd be fine.
Yeah, I'd be fine.
I continued reading a new novel by one of my favorite authors, and it was good; it was about an angel who fell in love with a human, and they had to go through great lengths to see each other.
It was like a weird version of Romeo and Juliet.
The male character kind of reminded me of Sebastian a bit; his personality. He was so snotty.
Why did I find egocentric males sexy?
That was concerning.
But—as I read—I heard a short cough next to me, and I gazed up in curiosity.
My lashes lowered.
Sebastian stood in the young adult section of the library, humming some off-key tune as his fingers scanned the spines of some books.
I shut my book and stood, setting it aside as I stepped over to him.
When I stopped, I crossed my arms, tapping my shoe impatiently.
Sebastian gazed down at me and smiled. "Oh, hey, Skye. You're here, too?"
"Give up the act," I said, "just say that you're following me."
"Am I, though?" he said, gazing up. "I was just looking for a book."
"Oh, really?" I said.
He nodded. "Yep."
"What's the title?" I demanded.
He sucked in air through his teeth. "I forgot."
"Author?" I arched a brow.
He gazed down at me, smiling. "Don't know that either."
"What's it about?" I said then.
He tipped his head to the side. "I don't remember. I read it when I was little; it was really good. When I see the cover, I'm sure I'll recognize it."
"Uh—huh," I said sarcastically.
"Oh," Sebastian said, smirking as he slid a book out from the shelf, and he flashed it toward me. "Here it is."
"A Murderer's Guide to Arson?" I read, gazing back up at him.
I really hoped he wasn't serious.
He nodded. "Yep."
"You read this when you were little?" I confirmed.
He nodded again, smirking.
"How young?" I asked him. "What age?"
"Third grade," he replied smoothly.
I gave him a look. "You read a ninth-grade level novel in third grade?"
He nodded, laughing softly. "I'm a fast learner."
I just sighed and shook my head, turning and stepping back over to my seat and I collapsed back down, picking up my book and parting the pages.
Right as I started reading, Sebastian sighed and sat down on a bench next to me, kicking up his legs onto the table and sat back, opening his book to read.
I glared at him. "Do you mind?"
"I mind," he replied, starting to read, "everyone can sit here, Skye. It's a free community."
I sent him a look before I stared back down at my book. "Fine. Just don't bother me."
He only smiled in response, and I glared down at my book, starting to read the lines and get back into the story.
Right as I blended back into the make-believe world, I heard him laugh from next to me, and I blinked and stared up, finding him reading.
"What's so funny?" I demanded.
He glanced up. "I thought you said not to bother you."
"You are bothering me," I hissed.
"With a novel that has such a dark title," he said, chuckling, "it sure is funny."
I rolled my eyes and gazed back down at my book. "All books are funny in some places."
He smirked up at me. "They're burning down some rich man's house. It's hilarious."
"That is a very odd thing to find hilarious," I muttered, turning the page.
He only replied, "It's funny. Seriously, the rich man's screaming."
"You horrify me," I replied then, though I wasn't really honest about that.
He did scare me, but...
But I kind of liked how mysterious he was. I just needed to make sure he wasn't a serial killer first.
"Wow," he said then, "you started that book when you got here and now you're almost done."
"So you have been watching me." I shot him a look.
He smiled. "Partly."
I finished the last page and closed my book. "You're a creep, you know that?"
"I know," he replied honestly, staring up at me as I stood. "Want me to walk you home?"
I glared at him, and he attempted a smile.
I just rolled my eyes and nodded. "You're going to follow me, anyway, so what the hell."
He smirked and stood, but I just started walking, and he set his book down and followed me.
As we exited the library, I pulled my hood over my head and zipped up my jacket, watching my breath come out in clouds as the small glitter of snow rained down on us.
He followed behind me, somehow comfortable in his T-shirt and jeans.
It was like twenty degrees out here! Was he some warmth god?
I pushed my hands into my pockets as he caught up with me, walking by my side.
"You're coming into my room tonight, aren't you?" I said.
"You should stop asking questions you know the answer to," he replied smoothly.
I sighed and shook my head, turning and entering my street, and he came with me, still walking by my side.
"Sooooo," he said then, "is your mom home?"
"Yes," I said, being honest this time, "so stay out of her sight if you don't want to be murdered."
He nodded in response. "Alright."
After about two minutes of silence, I stopped and turned, making sure we were out of sight from the windows. "Good night, Sebastian."
He only smiled. "Say that to me later tonight."
I glared. "Fine, stalker. Bye for now."
Before he could reply, I turned and stepped into my house.
Ugh. I hated him so much.
But also... he intrigued me more than I liked to admit.
*****
Later that night, I parted my lashes when my bedroom door opened and closed silently, and I glared at the wall as a tall, lean shadow cast among the dark walls.
The moment I felt the sheets rise, I hissed, "If you so dare try to cuddle with me, I will scream bloody murder and then maim you with a pair of nail clippers while you're rotting in jail."
"Wow," Sebastian said, "that's... dark and oddly specific."
I turned over and glared at him. "What do you want?"
"I come here every night," he told me, though I couldn't see his face in the darkness. "What else am I supposed to do?"
"Uh, sleep?" I suggested, hinting the word "duh."
"Nah," he said, voice low, "sleep's for losers."
I groaned and rolled over. "That's how you die, Mister Ego."
He pulled the sheets back, and I narrowed my eyes when I felt him slip in behind me.
"I will maim you," I warned.
"You said you would if I cuddle with you. I'm just lying next to you. There's a difference."
I groaned and threw a pillow over my face, and he just chuckled from behind me. "Good night, Sebastian," I growled.
"Night," he replied cutely.
