When I woke early the next morning—yes, I sleep—I suddenly felt air cover me in a sudden cold...
My arms were empty.
I shot up from the bed, gasping as if I had a nightmare, and I glanced down to find the puppy still sleeping at the foot of the bed; in the same position he'd been in last night.
I looked around the room nervously.
Where was Skye?
But that's when I saw a small, female figure sitting on the windowsill, holding herself tightly as she stared up at the snowflakes drifting from the night sky.
She couldn't sleep, could she?
I mean... if I saw a woman die, then I wouldn't be able to either.
"Skye," I whispered, making her glance over at me, "come back to bed."
Her eyes glossed over with uncertainty, and she shook her head.
I dropped my hands. "Why not?"
She shook her head again.
I sighed and closed my eyes tightly, but I just slid off the bed, stood, and stepped over to her quietly.
She looked up at me hazily as I stood in front of her.
I held out my hand.
She glanced down at before looking back up at me, clearly confused.
I just wiggled my fingers.
She looked down to it again, lifting her arm and hovering her hand over mine shakily.
After a moment of hesitation, she finally set her palm on mine, and I curled my fingers around hers.
"Come on," I said, nodding to the bed.
As I stepped forward, she gracefully slid off the windowsill behind me before following.
After I made it to the bed, I sat on the edge, and she followed, settling next to me.
"It was North, wasn't it?" I said.
She gazed up, looking shy suddenly. "How did you know?"
I smiled, wondering if she remembered that I could read minds.
I told her that, but she probably forgot, so I didn't think it was worth mentioning again.
"I just know," I said.
She leaned forward slightly, her black hair slipping over her shoulder and covering her skin in its inky-form.
"I'm going to guess," I told her, leaning forward to see her face, "and you tell me if I'm right, okay?"
She nodded, silent.
God, she was traumatized... I wasn't used to this, honestly.
"You went for a morning stroll," I told her, "encountered him, found out that it wasn't me, he did his normal 'creepy talk' that somehow traumatizes you, you find out his name, North, then you ran away. After running away, he's following you, right? You come across a pedestrian walking a dog, ask for help, and he kills her."
Skye grimaced at the memory, and I knew I was on point.
"You take the dog," I said, "run off and lose him, then hide in a closed restaurant and call me." I then shuffled closer to her, but I wasn't sure if she noticed. "You realized that North didn't have runes, how?"
She glanced at me. "How did you know?"
I smiled. "You told me at the restaurant, 'your doppelganger doesn't have runes,' so that's how you knew it was me."
She looked back into the distance, clearly lost. "Uhm... he's... When he encountered me, he acted like you, pretended to be you."
I nodded.
It wasn't the first time he'd done that, sadly.
"He was wearing a very low-collared shirt," she explained to me, "exposing his chest, and I noticed he didn't have runes. I then knew it wasn't you."
I watched her for a moment, and she seemed to space out as if recalling the memory.
"You were right on point, though," she told me, making me blink as she glanced over. "You knew everything which is a little unsettling, but... I just... I don't know."
"You trust me?" I asked her, smirking now.
She gave me a look. "Don't be so cocky. I don't trust a sunflower."
I laughed then, and she gazed back into the distance, stance easing as if she finally felt a little better.
I then sighed, tucking some hair away from her face as she looked back at me. "Hey," I said, "it's still early and you need your rest."
She glanced down. "I suppose... I just woke up and I didn't want to sleep again."
"Nightmare?" I said.
She pursed her lips and shook her head. "No, I woke up with a sudden sense of fear—that I needed to watch the room and protect myself—so I walked to the window to make sure no one was breaking in."
I sighed.
She was right, North kept breaking in somehow and she could sense it like I could... which made her ten times more interesting.
I put runes on the doors of all bedrooms occupied so he wouldn't break in while we were sleeping, and I also put runes on the sidewalk outside our house and on the doors of the house.
Runes marked a fallen angel; they also resembled an enchantment—protection—and North could not surpass them.
That's why he could never get runes when he was a child; his body had a horrible response to them ever since he was born.
I bled back into the moment, glancing up at Skye. "Come back to bed."
She nodded, still looking shy.
I then crawled backwards and slipped under the covers, and she glanced over and followed me, sliding under and resting her head on my chest.
I wrapped my arms around her, pulling her closer all while trying to keep her warm.
She was still shaking, poor thing.
My first experience watching someone die wasn't pleasant, and having North comfort me was another horrible experience.
"Shhh..." I whispered, brushing my hands over her arm as I pulled her closer, pulling the covers more over her form. "I got you. I got you, okay? You're safe."
She closed her eyes tightly and rolled onto me, and I let her seek comfort, now rubbing her back.
It was silent for a moment, and she seemed like she was comfortable now because she relaxed into me, melting, really.
"Hey, Sebastian?" she said.
I kept her close and pulled the covers more over her. "Yes?"
"We tend to... do this a lot..." she explained to me, making me smile when I heard the embarrassment to her tone. "I see friends at school snuggle with each other when they're upset... They rest their head on the other friend's lap? Does that mean... we're friends?"
I chuckled at her nervousness. "It means a lot of things."
She glanced up at me, looking too comfortable. "But does it mean we're friends? Are we... friends at the very least?"
I arched a brow. "Do you want to be more?"
"Yes—no!" she quickly said. "I never... implied that!"
She did, but whatever.
"Yes," I said then, amused, "we're friends... at least."
Her brows drew together at my hint and she just looked back down, snuggling closer despite the subject.
I pulled her to me, trying to get her close.
"You're safe, Angel," I told her. "No one can hurt you when you're in my arms."
I felt my eyes darken. "No one."
