I wanted to get this over with since I mentioned it in my last part very fleetingly and have noticed it here recently. A lot of Pokémon fans complain about how GF doesn't listen to them and what they want about the Pokémon games, but are surprised about it despite their attitude towards the company. People are also most likely misdirecting some of that hatred for some of their claims at GF rather than Nintendo as they publish the games and do have some say in them. This probably isn't true for the casual fan, even I who don't bother with the new games save for getting Brilliant Diamond a while after it released (which I quite enjoyed), but I still see enough to feel like making a point.
The first I want to make is about people complaining how the mainline games are too simple/linear. What these people, who I believe are older fans much like myself, tend to forget is that these games are designed FOR CHILDREN! They have always been kids games and always will be because that is the primary demographic that they are trying to reach. Even though I struggle through the games I played when I was a kid, I still loved them and felt really proud for beating a gym leader, rival, the Elite 4 and the Champion. Now...even though I still love to go back and play the games...I just don't feel that rush anymore.
I understand how the type match-ups work and that there's value in moves that have an extra effect or deal no damage but inflict a status or change stats. It doesn't diminish a ton of the fun I have with these games, but it's still something that I honestly miss about it. However, Gen 5 actually did a few new things like have only the regional Pokémon available until the post game...and people hate Gen 5. People hate it to such a degree that GF seemed to have taken the hint and have continued to play it safe since then since the change was received extremely poorly. Some "fans" just want to have their cake and it too, it would seem....
Speaking of change, let's talk about the spin-offs. I'm sure we can all agree that, generally speaking, the spin-off series' are pretty good. However, I think we can all agree that, when you're a kid playing a lot of them, they are immensely more difficult and often it takes way more time and effort to be able to beat them, even when you're older and have more experience in a lot of cases. Mystery Dungeon DX made a huge difference for me in grinding with how they changed the dojo to work, and I think it made the game better. Not saying red and blue rescue team was bad, but I couldn't appreciate them more until I was about thirteen because I just found them too difficult, and the same goes for the explorers series as well. I can't imagine this sentiment is too uncommon despite the love for these games, but they also didn't do as well as the mainline games which is pretty telling for a company that needs to turn a profit.146Please respect copyright.PENANASsU5ZvGV5j
Another thing I want to touch on is how a lot of Pokémon content seems to revolve around how competitively viable and nonviable some Pokémon are. I feel like people once again forget that this is a kids game and balancing will do more harm than it does good. The competitive scene isn't the only part of the community which is mostly casual gamers who just want to use their favorites no matter how good or bad they are, and I think it's not just Pokémon fans who miss that (will touch on this in another part). Super Smash Bros Ultimate tried to balance out the final smashes of every character, namely ones whose final smashes weren't that great like DKs, all in the name of making them competitively viable...and the competitive players don't use them along with the items. All we are left with is a bunch of fighters who had interesting, if useless, final smashes having basically just a fancy copy of someone else's (I know this isn't unique to Ultimate, but it is 100% more pronounced to me). Kids don't care about stats and natures and most casuals don't either because it's not fun for us to care that much when we just want to play a fun, turn-based lite-RPG.146Please respect copyright.PENANAx3i8JBpIad
Finally, another situation to Ultimate which I'll touch on briefly, is that people seem surprised that GF doesn't listen to their constant demands and bitching. I don't know about you, but if the majority of what I'm hearing is people saying 'it should be like this' or 'this is absolutely shit' I don't think I'd be so inclined to listen to those people. It's the same with the people who demand characters in Ultimate and are surprised when their bitching doesn't get them what they want. GF will make games that are popular and sell well and the formula works for the mainline games, so they'll probably stick to it. People can say that they haven't done anything innovative and that's true for a lot of game series' but you never see anyone complain about that. Before anyone says 'But that's not fun'...that's not your call to make for everyone.146Please respect copyright.PENANAueDsywn7ih
Things I think are fun are not what everyone else thinks are fun...and that's okay per my last part. Fun is subjective which is why I don't go ranting and raving on the internet about things I don't like as if my opinion is the only one that matters because I know that people do like those things, even if I can't understand why. People want the mainline games to become like Legends or even Palworld (someone is making a fan game that is basically Palworld but with real Pokémon and no weapons) but I'm still in the firm belief that Legends should remain a spin-off series that ties into the mainline games. People are wanting more spin-offs...why can't they just be happy with said spin-offs and let the mainline games be? Is it really that hard to accept that the changes you want probably aren't going to happen?
I actually have a bit that's solely about the fans and this is in relation to criticism about the more recent gens. There have been a lot of issues with recent games, from broken promises by GF and Nintendo as well as buggy launches that haven't been really been fixed (if a game is good because of the bugs it has, then it isn't a good game) and there have been some fairly lack-luster designs in recent gens such as Flamigo. Before any of you just dismiss me as a 'genwunner' my first games were Emerald and Sapphire and I'm not so blind to not be able to see some old designs are not good. However, in the case of gen 1, they didn't know this was going to become as hugely popular as it has, with merchandise being their main source of revenue from the ip, so of course they weren't going to put a boatload of effort into it.
Gen 2, my least favorite gen before gen 7, fell victim to the same issues that plagued Legend of Zelda II: Links' Adventure and Castlevania II: Simon's Quest where they simply just didn't know where to go with it next. However, we are nearing Gen 10 and there are 100% new designs that shouldn't have gotten approved. Again, people will say that this is just a 'genwunner' thing, but I see more people harping about 'genwunners' than I actually see genwunners complaining. There are valid criticisms to be had about designs and a bit on the hypocrisy of some loved Pokémon versus hated. People hated the Vanilish line in Unova, complaining that it was just an ice cream, but Alcremie gets a lot of love despite just being an ice cream. Same thing with Mareep and Wooloo. Not saying either are bad designs, but people seem to be a bit choosey with what they like, but turn around a hound others for being choosey as well with other things. This probably isn't a new phenomenon, but I just feel like I've noticed it a bit more.146Please respect copyright.PENANAmTnQSGee34
Anyway, this is probably just from the attitudes I've seen online and don't apply to the majority of the fan base, but these are still issues. And it's probably at least partially correct that GF doesn't listen to the fan base, but there's also believable reasons as to why they wouldn't, and it's just frustrating to me that some fans won't take some responsibility for this. That's enough for now...
