This'll probably be the last Danganronpa character I do as others I have found people have a similar opinion as I do. However, Nagito is not one of those characters. I don't like Nagito and can't really find a reason to even like him as the fandom seems nigh obsessed with him. Before I get to this opinion, I know about the trauma Nagito suffered and understand how it affects him, but I won't let that be an excuse for him. There's a problem with cherry-picking in the fandom I've noticed to determine who is absolved of their sins and who isn't.
Let's look at the first murder of Goodbye Despair. Nagito was both willing to kill someone and willing to die so that the others could show off their ultimate talents. The motive was to regain their school memories and Teru Teru took the bait to escape so he could see his mother. Of course, Teru Teru accidently ended up killing the Ultimate Imposter in both of their efforts to stop Nagito. Nagito admits his plans and reasons of murder long before it's figured out that Teru Teru actually did the deed, and he seems to not care about causing the death of an innocent person who wanted to keep everyone safe.
The second thing I hate is his treatment of Hajime after finding out he's a reserve student. Nagito, as the Ultimate Lucky Student, is at Hope's Peak for the sole reason that his name was chosen randomly. It's not really a true Ultimate and the fact that he sees Hajime as not worth his time because he doesn't have an ultimate talent is just infuriating to me. Considering most of the game shows Nagito trying to be close with Hajime, this rubs me the wrong way as Nagito is basically saying "You're not interesting enough for me anymore" and I've had "friends" who were like this and have a deep-seated hatred for people like this especially when they're nothing special themselves.
People try to excuse his actions through his trauma, but I'm not one of those people. Yes, I understand how trauma can change a person, but it's a cause of behavior...not an excuse. I think Nagito is a well-made character...but well-made doesn't mean likeable.
