This is possibly the biggest thing I hate about liking anime despite being ragged on what for what I want to watch, don't want to watch, like, and don't like. I'm someone who prefers to watch dubs because I have a bit of a tough time focusing on the subtitles and what's going on. This does not mean I won't watch subs when a dub doesn't exist such as for when I plan on watching Komi-san Can't Communicate. Despite this very valid reason and the fact I watch dubs for personal reasons, I only see outward despise for dubs and borderline hatred for those who enjoy them.
I understand that not every dub is great, but just because some are bad does NOT mean that they're all pieces of garbage that have no place in entertainment. Most of the issues with poor dubbing, I've found, lies more with VAs who aren't that great, localizations not getting things right, and even translators using the dub to force their political ideologies into the story just because. I am not saying that these are not bad things...but not every dub is garbage because some are. The dub for Black Butler is very well done and the voices fit the characters as much as the Japanese voices do. Same for Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. Just because some are bad does not mean they all are.
Another argument I've seen from sub watchers is "You're not getting the true experience" and my reaction to that is who the fuck do they think they are in saying that? People enjoy things in different ways, so who's to say what the proper way to enjoy something is? This is extremely toxic behavior much in the same way saying "You only like it because it's popular" is with the difference being the latter can actually be true that some people only like things because they're popular and for absolutely no other reason, but that's another topic.
Something I've noticed between dub and sub watchers is that some sub watchers are almost ready to riot and go on a crusade against dubs and the people who enjoy them. I rarely see people who prefer dubs in chats and on comments, but when I do the replies are almost always mostly people telling them that they're wrong and not a real fan. I do know some sub watchers who just shrug and say, "You like something I like, so it's all good" but so many more I've seen are toxic to dub fans.
This is legitimately one of the dumbest arguments in the anime community, and it's very one-sided from my experience. We are all enjoying the same thing just in different ways, and that is perfectly fine. Some people just need to get it out of their heads that just because they have poor experiences with dubs, that doesn't mean other people don't or don't let it affect them that much. Dubs are fine...subs are fine...both are fine. Can we dub enjoyers just live in peace?
