For some clarification, this isn't about the movie, but more so the character of the Joker. I haven't really found the last couple of live-action Jokers really that great. Not saying that the actors are bad, but the characters aren't what I expect when I think of the Joker. I understand that it's DC's obsession with their movies being edgy and gritty and I know many of their comics are the same, but there's something about the Joker that I miss.
I look at the more recent Jokers and I don't see the Joker. All I see is a psychotic, anarchic terrorist who is fighting against society...I don't see the Clown Prince of Crime. It seems to be about the Joker being committing his crimes against society because it beat him down rather than committing his crimes for the stuff and, most importantly, the laughs. He thinks he's funny and has wacky gadgets and plans to do what he does, and I haven't seen that in a live action Joker since Jack Nicholson which is what makes him my favorite. He's campy which is, to me, what the Joker should be. Driven mad by the chemicals he fell into changing his brain chemistry and just looking to have a little fun while causing a ruckus.
This isn't to say I think the recent Jokers are bad since they're supposed to be a tad more realistic with the character, but I'm tired of it. I want a campy Joker who makes sure he still looks nice when he goes out to cause trouble in a suit and slicked-back hair. I want the Joker who uses toxic laughing gas and has a poison-dart bang flag in his gun. Far from me to complain about something being edgy and angst, but I'm not really into it when it comes to certain things. The more recent Jokers just aren't Jokers to me...they're nothing more than anarchists who fight society because they believe someone has to. At least Heath Ledger's Joker was actually abused by his father to explain his insanity. I just miss the Jokers who were having fun while causing problems...and I doubt I'll ever see one in live action ever again.
