Before you say "It's not an anime" let me say something first...get over yourself. It's close enough for me to call it such and I don't particularly care if it's not from Japan. Anime, to me, is as much of a style as it is a genre. Anyway, now that that's done, let's get on to my opinions.
Thanks to a friend and my general love for Rooster Teeth (Fails of the Weak will always be special to me) I found and fell in love with the series. It was well-animated, had history and showed off the powers that existed in the world. I found something to like about every character they introduced and had my heart ripped from my chest in volume 3. Volume 4 was a bit boring but, as a filler volume, I didn't mind to much. We got some more lore as well as a continuation. The series was great...right up until volume 7.
I've got a bit of a bit pick opinion that I really don't like the new designs of a couple characters, namely Blake. I know a lot of people who look good with a bob, my ex had one for a bit but decided she liked her hair shoulder length, but she looked good. Blake...does not look good in a bob. There was really no reason for 90% of the character changes being what they turned out to be. Jaune, I feel, is another not great redesign with shaving the sides of his head. It just doesn't look right.
Now...on to the bigger problems I have. Season became a political drama which is something that I just can't push through and, in this case, I can't skip it because it's important. I tried twice to push through, but just couldn't as it felt so heavy-handed in the way it approached the political unrest in Atlas. Hopefully many of you have noticed that I said I enjoy Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood which, I will agree, has a bit of political drama but that's not it's focus. It's a story of revenge and desire for power more than the inner workings of the political system. Political dramas often bore me as I can just read the news and get something similar. I like a bit of escapism in the things I enjoy, sometimes. There are so many series I wanted to watch and get into, but the political drama just pushed me away.
Next, I want to talk about the community. I seem to find things to like that have rabid, toxic fan bases and basically limit my interaction with others and I'm not just talking about the shippers. I rarely ship characters but I can appreciate the fanart (I personally like Monochrome as it's more often sweet and cute) but many RWBY shippers are just the worst...and Bumblebee becoming official, I feel, was Rooster Teeth giving them what they wanted too soon. There was no scene where Blake and Yang really had a true heart-to-heart moment where they talked through what Blake had done by running off after the fall of Beacon even if they did seem closer after Adam's death. That doesn't get rid of the need to talk things over as Yang would still have that sore spot.
Some of you who read Stolen Hearts may look at this as a bit of hypocrisy, but I want to make a counter point. I never said William and Lindsay were 100% with each other. What happened between them still exists despite the fact that he got close to her for a client. I left it that way because love doesn't always fade even if the other is bad. There might be a sequel planned where I go into more, but I'm up to my eyes already so sit tight.
Another thing I hated about the fans is their reaction to stuff with Qrow. People threw a fit over RT selling pint glasses with Qrow's logo on them since he's a recovering alcoholic...he's also fictional. There are more pint glasses with different logos on them yet they threw a fit because a fictional character is a recovering alcoholic. A pointless outrage, if you ask me.
Needless to say, this great series just kinda led me to jump ship with the direction it was taken, but I think the fans would've pushed me away at.some point regardless.
