For those of you who have never played Pokémon before, you might know that there are usually two versions at least per generation. Usually there's nothing really that different between the two versions, save for the professors of Scarlet and Violet and facing off against either Team Aqua or Team Magma with Sapphire and Ruby respectively. However, there are differences between the two games in what Pokémon you can and cannot catch. This is honestly not a terrible idea since the idea behind it is to find a friend with the opposite version to trade for their version exclusives in exchange for yours. Usually, the version exclusive Pokémon are simply the same type and use and are just meant to be parallels. A quick example would be Vuplix and Growlithe lines from Gen 1, both of which are fire types and are usually best for special attack moves (when the physical/special split happened in gen 3) and have the same evolution method with a fire stone. From Gen 3 we got the Seedot and Lotad lines, both early grass types in case you didn't take the grass starter who both serve a similar purpose while needing a leaf stone and water stone to evolve respectively. 68Please respect copyright.PENANA2NGh3NoisJ
This is not to say that every version exclusive falls into this category since it's not always just Pokémon in the case of things like White Forest being for catching previous gen Pokémon while Black City, I believe, is more for rare items and battling npcs. Again, these are supposed to encourage you to find a friend with the opposite version and play together and not just battle. In the case of siblings, such as my brother and I, we just trade and play with each other and even ourselves since the 3DS was backwards compatible. With the Switch, I'm not even sure if local connection is possible even without the online subscription but most people only have a single one at any given time even if there are multiple kids due to price and other reasons. While the GTS wasn't a bad idea, even though it no longer exists, people are people and it was practically impossible to find what you wanted on it for a reasonable exchange and was honestly filled with people offering low tier, early game normal types in exchange for special event legendary and mythical Pokémon. But this isn't about that...this is about how paradox Pokémon are the worst for version exclusives.
In terms of paradox Pokémon there are two versions being Past and Future. Past forms basically just modify to the Pokémon to give it a more prehistoric design and, while I'm not super huge on the concept in and of itself, I can't deny that quite a number of them look good even if I don't like how they're named. Past paradox are the version exclusives of Scarlet and are definitely the better of the two. Players who chose Violet got stuck with the Future paradox which translates to basically "We took the Pokémon and turned it into a robot and didn't do anything else with it." As much as I think that quite a few Past forms don't really look good in any stretch of the imagination, Ragin Bolt comes to mind, I do like that they tried something different and interesting with the designs. The Future paradoxes are literally just a robot version and infinitely less interesting as an idea. I feel like this is a bit unfair to people who wanted to get Violet version since it feels like they didn't really try to put as much effort into the Future as they did the Past. The better idea, if they wanted to do the time travel bit (of which I don't really care for, but that's just me) would be to pick either past or future and make version exclusives based on that for both games rather than doing one for each. 68Please respect copyright.PENANALOJ37xLXzY
Like I said, if you can't trade without having the online subscription on the Switch, then you are stuck with whichever paradox you've got and I believe the people who chose Scarlet got the better half of the deal. I'm not talking stat wise (despite the fact that most content for Pokémon on YouTube seems to only care about stats, abilities and natures (which I hate)) but the Past paradoxes just seem like they had more time and effort into creating them and it really shows. Version exclusives just used to be parallels in either typing or strength or even just their lore which the Past seems to have in spades compared to the Future.68Please respect copyright.PENANAYOBsdzaKOE
