Gwen menyodorkan buku sejarah siswa Widehope yang diambil dari bawah meja. Sepertinya ia telah menyiapkan hal itu.
“Tidak mengagetkan untuk sekolah yang cukup besar ini, eh?” ia membuka buku tersebut hingga pada halaman tertentu. “Anak tunggal dari keluarga yang cukup terpandang.”
Kupicingkan mataku tepat pada namanya.
“Vera Hesselbein,” Tambahku. “Limburg, Belgia?”
“Jerman. Anak dari Gräfin Hasselbein. ”
Dari foto tersebut, aku merasa aneh. Sama sekali tidak terlihat bahagia.
“Gräfin?”
“Itu seperti Countess tapi versi jerman,” tambahnya. “Ngomong – ngomong, Vera Hasselbein, satu – satunya penerus Hesselbein setelah mengalami beberapa isu keluarga. Kepala keluarga mereka dulunya dijodoh – jodohkan yang berujung perceraian, 5 kali, 10 kali hampir menikah. Akhirnya ia harus menikahi istrinya yang adalah teman masa kecilnya dulu.”
“Jadi dia ini bangsawan?”
“Yeah, cukup mengejutkan.”
Aku mulai membayangkan bahwa 20 tahun yang lalu, Widehope sedang mengalami skandal yang besar. Mungkin itu tidak seburuk genosida, tapi tentu saja itu tidak seperti isu kematian satu orang. Masalahnya adalah bagaimana mungkin hal itu bisa ditutupi?
“Tunggu dulu, itu berarti garis keturunan Hasselbein sudah sirna?” tanyaku sedikit serius.
Gwendoline menghela nafas, ia mengangkat bahunya.
“Maksudku selain Rose-Marie G. Hasselbein ibunya, atau Bjorn Hasselbein, ayahnya, tidak ada lagi.”
Aku masih memandang foto itu.
“Sejauh mana pengaruh Hasselbein?”
“Well, mereka salah satu yang mendukung untuk mengubah paradigma pemikiran dari kedua bagian Jerman, blok barat dan timur. Mereka mencoba turun dan benar – benar mendengar pendapat rakyat, dan berita – berita bagus beredar.”
“Terbukanya perbatasan kedua wilayah. Pada akhirnya terminimalisir dari pengaruh soviet.”
Tentu saja itu jauh dari zaman tahun perang dunia kedua, kami membicarakan tentang masa depan. Berita itu tidak asing, bahkan dari mulut ke mulut pun tidak ada keraguan. Aku yang sudah terbiasa dikirim ke berbagai tempat pun pernah mendengar. Lagipula masa depan tidak sepenuhnya mendebarkan. Setidaknya bila berpikir ke arah potensial perang dunia ke tiga.
Ia mengangguk setuju.
“Well, benar…” sahutnya. “Tapi tidak ada yang beres apapun itu persetujuan yang dibuat manusia.”
“Yeah, aku setuju.” Tambahku. “Jadi apakah itu salah satu sebabnya mereka pindah ke inggris?”
Gwen mengangguk.
“Membangun reputasi mereka dengan beberapa bisnis. Hotel, restoran keluarga, dan yayasan sosial.” Gadis berkuncir permen itu agak menggurutu. “Setidaknya mereka belum menyadari yang sebenarnya…”
Beberapa orang berkelompok dengan tas yang terlihat berat tiba – tiba menuju tempat kami. Mereka terlihat seumuran.
“Permisi, bisakah kami meminjam beberapa buku untuk satu kartu identitas?” tanya seorang gadis yang berambut lurus dengan poni dipotong rapi, ia menyodorkan setidaknya empat buku yang cukup tebal.
“Maaf, maksimal satu untuk setiap kartu identitas. Kalau kau ada tugas berkelompol silahkan memanfaatkan tempat berkumpul yang ada di sana,” tunjuk Gwendoline. “Anda juga diperbolehkan membawa snack selama tata tertib selalu dijaga. Selamat membaca!” katanya dengan agak datar.
Mereka pergi dan terlihat kecewa, tanpa ucapan maaf dan hanya menyeleweng.
“Lihatlah mereka? Tidak lebih baik kukira.” Gwendoline masih menggerutu.
Aku bisa mengerti mengapa Gwendoline bersikap seperti itu. Pola pikirnya sederhana, bila kau bersikap baik, maka ia akan merespon sama. Baik untuk siapapun dan itu berlaku bagi siapapun. Sedikit sensitif, tapi aku suka karena ia tidak munafik.
“Jadi, Vera Hasselbain ini, apa yang terjadi?”
Ia menghela nafas, lalu menyodorkan koran lama. Lagi – lagi gadis ini menyiapkan segalanya atas keingintahuannya.
Aku membaca koran itu.
“Tidak menarik, bukan?”
Aku menolak sepenuhnya.
“Tergantung bagaimana kau menyimpulkan.”
Ia terlihat bingung. Aku langsung mengutip beberapa kalimat dari koran tersebut.
“Jadi kau tidak percaya pada barang bukti itu?”
“Tidak sedikitpun.” Kataku pernuh percaya diri.
Gadis kecil ini mulai terlihat sebal. Ia selalu saja ingin membuat orang lain setuju pada ceritanya. Well, aku mengakuinya tapi tidak pada bagian ‘surat terakhir yang ditemukan polisi’ itu.
“Tapi sidik jari dan hasil forensik menyatakan bahwa itu cocok!” protesnya.
Aku mengusap – ngusap kepalanya.
“Itu cerdik sekali! Sudah kuduga, Gwen imutku!”
“Grrr…” katanya dengan geram. “Aku setidaknya butuh seminggu untuk mencari informasi itu, bodoh!”
Wajar sih kalau dia agak frustasi. Dia ini teman keduakku, setelah Foscow, well aku cukup terbuka dengan orang yang agak melankolis dan penyendiri. Salah satu alasannya sering membaca buku adalah menumpuk pengetahuan yang suatu saat ia ingin bekerja berpindah – pindah tempat, selain menjadi salah satu hobi bagi Gwendoline.
Dan salah satu pekerjaan yang ia impikan menurutku cukup merepotkan. Selain menguras otak ia harus terlibat dengan masalah yang seharusnya bukan tanggung jawabnya sama sekali. Seorang detektif terkenal. Harus terkenal karena bila ia ingin berpindah tempat, namanya akan menjadi kredibilitas bagi kepolisian di wilayah lain.
Gwendoline terlihat bingung dan bolak – balik membaca koran tersebut.
“Dengar, dua hal bila kau ingin mencari informasi. Satu, jangan pernah percaya tulisan koran. Mereka adalah hasil satu persen fakta bercampur sisanya opini – opini tolol. Mereka menjual sebuah kisah yang setidaknya terdengar masuk akal.”
Ia masih sibuk mencari kesalahan dan keteledorannya.
“Kedua, kau harus punya alasan logis. Tidak semua garis adalah lurus.” Kataku maksud menenangkannya.
Gwendoline penuh ambisius akan yang dia raih. Seperti sekarang, meskipun paruh waktu penjaga perpustakaan, ia ini termasuk satu – satunya yang diterima oleh pihak Widehope dari sisi belakang. Tapi sebagai temannya, boleh kuanggap seperti adikku sendiri, aku cukup khawatir dengan tubuh kecilnya.
“Grrr… baik, baik,” tambahnya setelah menghela nafas dan agak tenang. “Menurutmu sendiri?”
Ini cukup merepotkan. Sebenarnya aku tidak datang untuk berdebat. Objektifku mengajaknya liburan, ke tempat yang tidak seperti kurungan moderen nan intelektual. Memancing, hehijauan, tanah lapang yang luas, angin sepoi – sepoi, itulah temanya.
Aku menghela nafas.
“Baik, pertama mari surat itu dianggap sebagai barang bukti,” kedua tanganku kuangkat, jariku kejentikkan ala mendongeng.
Ia mengangguk, matanya terlihat antusias untuk hal yang paling menguras otak. Aku menjelaskan panjang lebar. Tapi sebelum itu, ia telah setuju kalau aku menjelaskan dengan masuk akal, ia akan menuruti permintaanku.
“Hm… masuk akal.”
“Yeah, itu terlalu sangsi untuk alasan yang satu itu, tapi aku positif bila asma bukan alasan bodoh untuk orang bunuh diri.”
Pupil mata Gwendolin kembali membesar lagi.
“Baiklah, aku perlu cari tahu tentang keluarga itu lebih dalam.”
“Meh… terserah.” Sahutku yang kurang bersemangat.
Gwendoline mengambil nafas lalu dihembuskan dengan maksimal. Ia terlihat puas dengan teoriku. Ia kembali pada pekerjaannya, kali ini jarinya mengetikkan sesuatu di depan komputer.
“Jadi untuk apa kau menemuiku?”
“Mengajakmu liburan. Itulah proposalku.”
Ia diam sesaat, tapi wajahnya terlihat sebal. Ia sebenarnya menolak, tapi Gwendoline bukanlah orang yang ingkar janji. Well, proposalku lebih unik caranya untuk mencapai persetujuan. Tidak akan terjadi bila aku tidak memutar otakku. Tapi karena informasi itu, bukan hanya Gwendoline yang terpancing umpan atas rasa penasarannya. Paling tidak umpan itu dapat dua ikan.
