Kutarik pancingku dan seekor ikan menampakkan dirinya. Aku sempat tidak percaya pada yang kulihat. Itu terjadi semenjak 2 menit setelah aku melempar kailnya ke sungai. Secepat itu hatiku gembira.
“Kau pernah dengar orang hebat muncul dari sifat malas, Gwen?” ku ayun – ayunkan ikan itu tepat di hadapannya.
“Rubbish, Mark! Jangan bercanda!” sahut Gwendoline dengan sebal.
Kuambil air hingga setengahnya mengisi timba di sebelahku. Lalu kutaruh ikan itu di dalamnya.
“Oh, jadi ini yang namanya salmon?”
“Yeah, salah satu ikan yang paling dihormati karena kelezatannya. Itu membuat makanan lezat baik diolah mentah ataupun matang. Rasanya cenderung lebih kuat daripada Trout.”
Well, itu tidak seperti aku pernah mencobanya, tapi berdasarkan buku yang dipinjamkan Tn. Fischelich.
“Oh!” kata Beckey takjub, matanya berbinar – bianr.
Sementara dari ujung alat pancing Gwendoline juga bergerak. Wajahnya yang sebal kini menjadi bersemangat, senyumannya selebar lautan.
“Oh? Biasanya yang ketiga adalah keberuntungan!”
Kulempar mata pancingku lagi.
“Benarkah? Selamat menikmati hari libur.”
Aku sama sekali tidak menyesal mengajak Gwendoline pergi ke luar. Sebagai gadis kutu buku, yang cenderung menyendiri dan selalu berada di bawah atap, aku harus menariknya paksa untuk mencoba dunia luar. Ini tidak seperti aku mengenal masa lalu orang lain, kadang firasatku tajam untuk hal – hal sensitif. Aku ingin Gwendoline melepas penghalang di antara semua orang.
Itu juga tidak buruk bisa mengenal Beckey, gadis yang atletis, juga tipe – tipe yang suka pergi keluar seperti piknik. Malahan ia cenderung di dalam atap. Aku ingat tahun lalu, ia mendapatkan semuanya nilai merah. Karena hal itu, Beckey tidak mendapat kesempatan untuk meluangkan waktu bersenang – senang, tiap malam aku melihatnya jalan – jalan kecil di luar sendirian. Cukup menyedihkan untuk gadis yang tampak dari depan banyak celometan.
“Kau mau coba memancing, Beckey?” tanyaku.
“Dengan senang hati!”
Kemudian kuajarkan sedikit tentang dasar – dasarnya. Cukup sederhana, bila gagangmu bergerak, maka cukup tarik dudukannya dan mainkan katrolnya.
Gwendoline menarik tangkapannya yang ketiga.
“Wow! Baik, setidaknya ini bukan perch. Hm… trout?” katanya dengan wajah tidak terlalu puas.
Kulepaskan kail itu dengan hati – hati, lalu kutaruh ke timba Gwen.
“Well, lumayan besar. Kukira kau sudah boleh berbangga.”
“Kau pikir begitu?”
Aku mengangguk setuju.
Setelah beberapa saat, pancingan Beckey tak kunjung disahut. Wajahnya terlihat agak bosan, tapi setidaknya ia melepaskan kucing tadi. Maksudku, kucing dan ikan. Aku tidak mungkin melapor ke polisi bila kucing mengambil satu ikan kami, benar?
Setelah membiarkan Gwen dan Beckey bersenang – senang dengan alat pancing itu, aku mundur sedikit dan merebahkan diri.
“Gwen, tadi katanya kau bilang tidak asing?”
“Tentang Garnache?”
“Yeah.”
“Garnache? Bukannya itu orang yang dibicarakan Tn. Juan?” sahut Beckey.
“Eh? Pantas aku merasa pernah dengar.” Kataku agak keheranan.
“Itu loh, katanya salah satu pelanggan yang memborong semua jangkrik dan ulat. Saat kau pergi ia menambahkan bahwa Garnache ini sudah tidak pernah terlihat lagi sejak insiden di Widehope.” Jelas Beckey.
“Huh? Insiden apa?”
“Entahlah, ceritanya berhenti sampai di situ.”
“Kalau diingat – ingat, aku juga pernah lihat namanya di arsip koran. Tapi tidak terlalu penting menurutku, restoran yang hampir mendapatkan Michelin Star pertamanya.” Kata Gwendoline dengan yakin.
“Hampir?”
Pancingan Gwendoline bergetar lagi.
“Yeah, namanya tersangkut kasus. Itu saat malam hari, makan malam. Saksi matanya cuman anak, istri, kedua pembantunya dan tamu.”
“Uh huh. Tamu, katanya investor,” tangannya menarik alat pancing dengan kesulitan. “Mark, ini berat sekali!”
Aku bergegas membantu Gwendoline. Rasanya seperti menarik hiu bila kau membayangkan setinggi – tingginya, tapi kalau pesimis, ini mungkin sepatu boots.
Saat itu sudah sampai ke permukaan, aku bergegas menghampiri ujung kailnya. Aku tidak mau kalau itu kabur atau malah pancingan ini rusak. Meskipun murah, membelinya lagi hampir mustahil.
Kupeluk erat – erat ikan itu meskipun banyak gerak. Aku tak peduli bajuku amis nantinya, yang penting hasil! Bahkan basah pun bukan masalah.
“Ini besar sekali!” kataku takjub.
Aku menyuruh Beckey menaruh pancingannya dan mengambil ember satunya yang kosong untuk diisi air. Ember yang dibawa Beckey masih belum terpakai. Masalahnya ikan ini dua setengah kali lipatnya dari ukuran sedang.
“Nah, Mark, itulah yang dinamakan professional!” Gwendoline unjuk muka.
“Well, kau dapatkan itu, little rookie!”
Sementara itu, pertama kalinya alat pancing Beckey bergerak.
“Mark, mark, lihat!” tambahnya dengan heboh. “I-itu gerak sendiri!”
Aku menyuruhnya tenang dan mengikuti dasar – dasar menangkap seperti Gwendoline lakukan. Ikan pun muncul di permukaan. Dan itu menjadikan Salmon yang kedua.
“Grrr… aku akan bergabung di klub salmon!” Gwendoline bersemangat melempar kail lagi.
Tidak membutuhkan waktu yang agak lama seperti kubayangkan, timba kami sudah penuh. Waktu sekitar pukul tiga sore, yang artinya harus segera kembali. Sebelum itu kami menuju menuju Fishmonger di Malton untuk menjual ikan – ikan ini. Itu hanya memakan waktu 10 menit dari Sungai Derwent. Setelah itu kami naik bus untuk kembali.
“Apakah ini mimpi? Ataukah aku akan mengalami kesialan?” tanyaku sambil menghitung hasil penjualan ikan tadi.
“Hey, hentikan itu!” sahut Gwendoline.
“Kata – kata adalah doa, Mark!” tambah Beckey.
“Well, maksudku ini 100 pounds!”
Biasanya aku dapat sepertiganya. Secara logika, memang dengan tiga timba lebih banyak tempat untuk ikan. Lagipula aku juga punya dua bantuan tenaga. Mari kita lebih rasional.
Uang itu kubagi dengan adil. Kusodorkan pada Gwendoline dulu.
“Huh? Tidak terima kasih!” tolaknya.
Aku menampar – nampar ringan pipinya.
“Oh ayolah anak manis, papa sedang bahagia!”
Aku sedikit menyesal mengusilinya. Bagaimanapun cubitan tangannya itu hampir sama seperti gigitan serigala.
“Auuch! Itu tidak perlu, kan?”
Dia membuang muka.
“Baik, baik,” tambahku menyodorkan ke Beckey. “Bagianmu?”
“Tidak, Mark. Terima kasih sudah mengajakku liburan.” Ia menolak dengan halus.
“Hey, hey, ayolah!”
Sekuat apapun ku memohon mereka tetap tidak mau menerima hasil tadi. Aku tidak punya pilihan lain selain mengantonginya. Mungkin aku akan memberi mereka dengan cara lain.
Perjalanan sudah dihabiskan selama tiga puluh menit. Suasana tenang dan itu wajar karena mereka juga kelelahan. Sementara kami masih menikmati snack yang kubeli. Tenang, aku beli dua stok, tapi tidak untuk yang satu setengah liter. Lagipula itu tidak seperti Beckey terlalu haus, hari juga sudah sore.
“Hey, Gwen, soal tamu yang tadi. Ada kriteria?” tanyaku sedikit penasaran.
“Hm… seingatku itu tertulis wanita. Nanti akan kuinfokan lagi.”
“Hey, kalian ngomongin apa?”
“Eh? Tidak – tidak. Aku dan Gwen memang sudah begini dari awal. Jadi, tiap kali ada berita aneh dan… aku bertemu Gwen, begitulah kami sering membicarakannya.”
Anggukan Beckey agak dipaksakan.
“Berita aneh? Oh, Tn. Juan pernah menyebutkan itu.”
Kemudian kutanyakan apakah persis dengan koran yang kubaca.
“Hm… bukan pembunuhan kok. E-entahlah aku juga tidak yakin, hehe.”
“Hey, ayolah!”
“Yeah, aku tidak tahu apa maksudnya tapi aku hanya dengar China Girl.”
“Dengar?” tanyaku agak bingung.
Beckey menjelaskan kalau mereka, Beckey, Gertrude dan Rita, sebelum tokonya tutup Tn. Juan membaca koran dan mengucapkan agak keras.
Selang dari tiga puluh menit, bus sudah di Darley. Sementara itu kami turun dari pertigaan. Anehnya kami mendengar sirine ambulan dan polisi yang tidak jauh. Mungkin aku harus mulai hati – hati dalam berkata.
