Semua orang terlihat heran dan bingung.
“Kenapa? Ini hidangan yang enak,” tambah Tn. Cake. “Benar begitu, Tn. Fischelich?”
“Et bien, kau menggunakan bumbu asia?” ia mengendus. “Kecap kedelai hitam. Aku tidak mencium adanya masalah.”
Pria yang dipanggil Fischelich itu memandang setiap orang dengan kebingungan. Wanita bor itu menjelaskan dengan jelas.
“Jadi kau mengundangku hanya sebagai testimoni, Tn. Mark?” tanya Tn. Fischelich dengan nada agak kecewa.
Semua orang terdiam, dan aku merasa itu agak menakutkan.
“Anda bisa dapat resepnya gratis kalau mau.” Kata Tn. Cake menawar.
Suasana kembali hening lagi untuk sesaat.
Pria botak itu menghela nafas.
“Nak, aku tak seburuk itu,” tambahnya memandang lagi setiap orang. “Baik, baik, aku mengerti garis besarnya.”
Ia mengambil gigitan pertama. Aku bisa melihat orang di sekitar gugup. Tidak satupun dari mereka berkedip.
“Hey, nak, bolehkah aku pesan ikan itu?” bisik nenek tua itu. “Aku tidak mengerti kenapa orang – orang itu tidak mau makan.”
Aku menjelaskan pada nenek itu apa yang terjadi. Masalahnya itu adalah yang aku dan Tn. Cake beli di pasar ikan aquarium di Horley. Ditambah ia menceritakan soal racun yang bisa membunuh manusia bila terkena durinya.
Aku berbisik pada Tn. Cake
Ia kemudian kembali ke dapur untuk membawakan satu lagi untuk nenek tua itu.
“Ini nenek, silahkan!”
Makanan itu telah sampai pada mejanya.
“Wah, terima kasih, nak.”
“Mark, kenapa kau sangkut pahutkan dengan orang luar?” protes Miss Pusscat.
Setelah beberapa menit makanan itu tinggal separuhnya, sementara milik paman botak itu telah menyisakan tulangnya.
“I-ini luar biasa! Ka-katakan apakah aku bisa beli satu lagi untuk kubungkus?”
“Maaf nek, hanya itu yang terakhir.”
Paman pria botak itu menuangkan sirup di gelasnya.
“Kalian itu kenapa? Bila dingin itu akan berkurang!”
Mereka masih terlihat ragu – ragu. Namun Tn. Cake menunjukkan botol hitam. Mereka kemudian mulai mengangkat garpu tersebut.
Dalam beberapa menit, mereka terlihat menikmati hidangan tersebut. Aku agak menahan tawa saat wajah Tn. Cake menatap Ms. Pusscat dengan mengejek.
“Ini enak, aku akui itu, Cake,” tambah wanita glamour agak bingung. “Aku memang tidak di sana, tapi ini aneh. Apakah kau mengganti ikannya?”
“Non. Ini sama seperti yang dulu. Salah satu ikan paling beracun dan bisa menyebabkan gangguan kardiovaskular. Well, misalnya serangan jantung.”
“Stonefish,” tambah pria botak itu. “Masih satu keluarga dengan lionfish. Ini termasuk makanan eksotik tapi sangat bernutrisi. Kalian jangan meremehkan, aku bisa menjual ini di restoranku sekitar dua ratus pound lebih.”
Tidak mengagetkan bagiku. Lagipula kami beli dengan harga per kilo dua puluh pound.
“Ini hanyalah pembuka. Seperti yang kalian lihat, itu telah berubah menjadi makanan enak dan sehat. Sehingga kalian bisa menyimpulkan sendiri, bagaimana bisa ini membunuh orang banyak.” Jelas Tn. Cake
“Tapi itu tidak mengubah ikan itu adalah yang paling beracun, bukan?”
Tn. Cake menggeleng dengan santai.
Sementara Miss Pussett mulutnya masih mengunyah. Aku sedikit khawatir ia tersedak tulangnya.
“Ini enak! Aku tidak mengerti kenapa pada waktu itu, tapi ini enak!”
Miss Pusscat memukul kepala rekannya itu dengan ringan yang membuatku sedikit tertawa.
Beberapa orang terlihat piringnya telah kosong. Aku, tanpa kode isyarat, langsung membawanya ke belakang dapur. Lalu kembali ke tempat semula.
“Dua hal, Mark. Pertama, itu ikan beracun. Kedua, ada kemungkinan waktu itu kau memberanikan diri mengolahnya lalu terjadi sedikit kelalaian yang menyebabkan kau gagal mengolah ikan tersebut. Apa kau ingat? Kau waktu itu pernah bilang belajar instrumentasi pengolahan pufferfish?”
“Exactement!” tambah Tn. Cake. “Seperti yang kau bilang, Gwen, Tn. Fischelich mengajariku itu.”
“Tentu saja aku tak mengizinkannya untuk mengolah ikan itu! Lagipula aku tidak punya hak. Itu seperti pelatihan dengan sertifikat! Aku hanya ingin membuka wawasannya. Sebagai gantinya yang ia masak sekarang ini adalah versi mudahnya.” Jelas Tn kepala botak itu.
Beberapa dispenser sirup itu telah habis, aku segera mengisikan ulang. Sementara nenek itu, juga ingin minum sirup tersebut. Jadi sebelum kembali, aku menambah satu wadah.
Pria berambut rapi kuning itu angkat bicara, “Jadi itu seperti ular beracun? Aku pernah mendengar di Amsterdam, katanya ular bisa dimakan.”
“Tepat, tapi itu tidak benar.”
Tn. Cake kembali ke dapur untuk membawa sisa – sisa sirip punggung duri yang telah digunting.
“Pertama aku ingin mengoreksimu, Herald. Ular itu bukan beracun. Tapi berbisa.”
“Eh? Bukannya itu sama saja?” sanggah Nona rambut bor.
“Mari kujelaskan. Orang – orang sering salah dalam penyebutan yang pada akhirnya itu akan tetap berujung pada kesalahpahaman. Beracun, atau dieja “p-o-i-s-o-n-o-u- s” dan berbisa, atau dieja “v-e-n-o-m-o-u-s” itu adalah kedua hal yang sangat berbeda.”
Tn. Cake kemudian mengambil sirip punggung duri itu dari dapur.
“Perbandingan yang paling umum untuk tingkat keaktifan efek samping, bila berbisa (venomous) efeknya adalah saat disuntikan atau tertusuk (injected), sementara beracun (poisonous) adalah bila ditelan (ingested). Well secara fakta, racun bila dihisap, ditelan, dan ditusukkan tetap beracun.”
Sirip punggung duri itu kemudian ditunjuknya bagian ujung.
“Seperti ular cobra, dengan taringnya akan merobek permukaan kulit lalu menyuntikkan bisa itu agar masuk ke peredaran darah. Darah mengental lalu dalam beberapa menit, korban akan mati. Sama seperti sirip punggung duri ini cara kerjanya,” tambahnya. “Bisa (venom) hanya aktif bila masuk peredaran darah. Atau paling tidak ia masuk ke celah tubuh yang ada lukanya.”
“Jadi secara kasar, kau bisa meminum bisa (venom) hewan apapun?”
Itu pertanyaan yang cukup tabu menurutku. Lagipula untuk apa orang minum itu?
Tn. Cake mengangkat bahunya.
“Selama di rongga mulut tidak ada luka atau pendarahan lain. Beberapa orang bilang itu rasanya manis.”
Wajah mereka menjadi ngeri. Well, aku sendiri juga merasa jijik setelah mendengar itu.
“Tapi, Mark, itu tetap saja masih punya potensi. Maksudku kau bilang ‘selama di rongga mulut dan seterusnya tidak ada pendarahan’. Kalau itu diterapkan pada yang lalu, masih bisa saja.” Protes Miss Pusscat.
Wanita glamour itu mengambil sebuah dokumen dari tasnya.
“Menurut forensik saat itu beberapa orang disebabkan karena kardiovaskuler mereka terganggu, sehingga itu memicu serangan jantung dalam potensi yang sangat tinggi. Itu cocok dengan stonefish yang kau katakan tadi.”
Ia kemudian menyodorkan kertas itu pada Tn. Cake.
“Terima kasih, Ms. Mcpherson,” jelasnya setelah membaca dengan singkat. “Bagaimanapun juga, ada dua hal yang bermasalah. Yang pertama hasil forensik ini mengatakan bahwa terdapat kokain di tubuh korban. Sementara stonefish, mengandung verrucotoxin. Kedua, dalam ilmu memasak, bisa (venom) bila dimasak dalam suhu seratus derajat, maka mereka akan pecah jadi protein. Dalam hal ini verrucotoxin termasuk.”
Semua orang terkejut.
“Benarkah?”
“Well, itu benar, Verd.” Tambahnya sambil menepuk ringan pundak Tn. Fischelich. “Untuk itu aku bawa orang ini.”
Tn. Fischelich menjelaskan lebih detail.
“… bila itu pufferfish maka aku sendiri akan menghabisi bokongnya! Tapi untuk yang satu ini tidak masalah. Semua tepat seperti yang ia jelaskan.”
Ms. Pusscat mencatat hal tersebut. Sementara Tn. Cake menyuruhku untuk mengambil kue untuk ornag – orang.
“Baiklah, penjelasanku selesai. Mari kita membahas apa yang harus dibahas.” Katanya dengan serius.
Ms. Pusscat mengerang.
“Kenapa tidak dari awal saja?”
“Karena aku oportunis, seperti kucing, Gwen.”
