“You have got to tell us what happened on your date with Jafaris Page.” Tilly comes up to me while I am getting my books for my third period class. I turn to her, stuff my books in my bag, and close my locker.
“What are you talking about?” I know exactly what she is talking about. But, how in the hell does she know that I went on a date with Jafaris Page?
“The date you two had on Saturday.” She squeals. “I am dying to know about it and so is everyone else.”
I look around and see no one else interested in the date I had with Jafaris. I eye Tilly and arch my brow. “Yeah, everyone is just buzzing about it, Tilly.” I say sarcastically and begin walking to my class and she hurries by me.
“Well, not right now because it’s still fresh news. But, I want to know what happened. Please.” She begs.
I sigh knowing she won’t ever let up until I tell her what happened. But the thing is nothing happened. I look at my watch on my wrist, “Okay, he took me to a beach and we had a picnic. We talked about stuff and he took me home.” I continue walking after telling her the ‘juicy’ news.
She runs up after me bumping into a few students who are trying to get to their classes before the warning late bell rings. “Surely that can’t be everything.”
“Why does it matter?” I turn to her and massage my temples. “It was a date. That’s it. Nothing happened. There was no kissing or sexing, if that’s what you are hoping for. All we did was talk.” With that, I turn on my heel and leave her standing there.
Of course, I wasn’t about to tell her that he actually kissed me before I got out the car. You know, that old school thing. But, that’s none of her business, it’s none of anyone’s business. I think I need to have a talk with Jafaris at the end of the school day since we both have different schedules.
Walking to my class, I spot Jafaris talking to one of his homeboys, he smiles upon seeing me and waves. The corners of my mouth involuntarily turn upward in a small smile and I wave back. I couldn't mad at him even if I wanted to be. I signal that I need to talk to him after school and he nods.
The rest of the day, I was in a daze about my new crush on Jafaris. I spent some classes daydreaming about our next date or doodling his name on my notebook. I caught myself a few times doodling or daydreaming, I had to stop this nonsense. I couldn't let this boy take my sense away, or what I have left of it. I had to pay attention to my lesson. But who was I kidding. I am not saying I'm in love, but I do really like him a lot.
On our date, we found out we have a lot in common. Music, foods, and wanting to go to college along with what stores have the best shoes. However, we have a lot of things we don't agree on. TV shows, basketball stars, and football teams. But other than that we get along great in other aspects.
With the school day finally at the end, I walk up to Jafaris almost forgetting what I wanted to discuss with him when i saw the sweat glistening from his forehead. At that very moment, I realized how handsome he truly is and realized what the fuss is about. I truly landed me a cutie.
“Hey, Nubia.” He greeted with a smile and his friends behind him.
“This is Nubia?” His light skin friend questions with a raised brow.
Jafaris turns to his friend with his face twisted in annoyance, “Yeah? What’s up, Teion?”
“N-nothing, man. I just didn’t know.” He shuts his mouth when Jafaris steps a little closer to him. He looks at the ground and decides to go to his bus instead of hitching a ride with Jafaris.
I watch Teion hike his bag on his gym bag on his shoulder and walk to the bus. I flinch when I feel Jafaris’ arm encircle my waist. “Like I was saying, this is Nubia. She is my girl.”
Girl? Wait...huh? I wave as his two boys nod in approval, “‘Ight, dawg.”
But I don’t think their approval would have mattered anyway to Jafaris. They get the hint with a smirk and do some secret handshake with Jafaris and get on the bus with Teion. Once they get on the bus, Jafaris and myself begin to walk to his car.
“So,” he opens the door for me. I look back at the bus I was supposed to be getting with my sister, it is already moving. I shrug and get in the car. He goes and gets in on the driver side and cranks up the car. He pulls out of the school’s parking lot.
“So, what did you want to talk about, lil one?”
Lil one? What the fuck are we doing? “I was wondering who everyone was getting the notion from that we went on a date.” I tell him looking forward.
“I told a few people that we hung out. But gossip is like a game of telephone. Somewhere along the line, the communication gets distorted.”
I nod understanding what he is saying. “Oh.”
“Do you not want to be my girl?” He places his hand on my knee. The musles inside my tummy and vagain tighten.
“I mean I would love to be, but you didn’t even ask me properly. Everyone just assumed.” I shrug my shoulders. Am I really doing this? I hadn’t been in a decent relationship or any relationship in a long time.
“Would you like to be my girl?” We stop at a fast food restaurant. “And do you want something to eat?”
I look at the Cook Out restaurant, I’ve never been here before. “Ahh, never been here before.” I unclick my seat belt and just as I am about to get out. He locks the door.
“Ahh, my answer to my question.”
I turn to Jafaris and eye him. A small smile unknowingly spreads across my face, “Yes, I will be your girl.”
“Great.” He plants a surprise kiss on my lips then unlocks the door, but quickly gets out and opens the door for me.
I giggle at the gesture and get out.
