Thomas and Hunter entered the house remorsefully, obviously not having any more luck than the rest of us.
“Is this everybody?” I asked as Glenn showed Thomas and Hunter the news video.
Enoch looked around and counted heads.
“Yes,” he says. “Sixteen teens and one toddler.” He pointed to Sparrow who was being entertained by Elizabeth.
“Guys! Can you all come over here for a second?” I called out.
The teens started to sit around the living room.
All watching me.
“Ok,” I began. “So, it looks like we’re on our own. If anyone has something to refute that, please say so.”
The teens said nothing and looked around at each other.
“Oh boy.” I took a deep breath. “We need to plan our first step.”
“We should stay here. In case it is all just a joke, and our parents come back,” one of the junior highers piped up.
I doubt they were coming back, but maybe it would be a good idea to stay here to figure out a plan.
“Ok. We’ll stay here for the night. Unless someone has a better idea?”
The group shook their heads.
I glanced into the kitchen as something caught my eye.
“Um, Hunter? What is that?” I pointed at the ceiling.
Hunter looked at where I was pointing.
“Oh, that? It’s just a security camera.”
The group started to look amongst themselves in hope.
Hunter started to realize what he said. “It’s a security camera!”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, opening an app.
The teens gathered around him, peering over his shoulders.
Hunter rewound the footage to before.
We saw Sparrow playing in the living room while a couple of the parents talked in the kitchen.
Suddenly, they vanished, leaving Sparrow by herself.
Moments later, Thomas ran into the house and found Sparrow.
Everyone stepped back from the phone.
“Ok,” Grace began. “So, they’re all gone.”
No one spoke. Sparrow started to cry.
I started to push all the furniture against the wall opening up a large space in the living room.
I sat down in the middle of the floor.
Grace sat next to me. Elizabeth on my other side.
Soon, the teenagers were all sitting in a large circle.
With everyone lost in their own thoughts, I glanced around our circle taking everyone in.
Grace and her younger brother Levi.
Elizabeth and her younger brother Glenn.
Danielle and her older brother David and her younger brother Josiah.
The sisters Rose and Carmin.
The brothers Jack and Byrant.
Hunter.
Enoch.
James.
Thomas with little Sparrow on his lap.
Then me.
“Seventeen is an odd number, therefore it is an unlucky number. Who should we throw out?” Levi, one of the junior highers, comments.
“We could kick out Hunter. He’s a dead weight anyway.” Elizabeth glares at Hunter.
“Or Elizabeth. Why is she here?” Hunter glares daggers right back at her.
“Stop! We aren’t kicking anybody out.” I stand up. “We can’t be fighting. We must work together!”
Suddenly, a loud booming voice caused everyone to shriek in terror.
