A couple of girls screamed.
“Sparrow!” I heard Thomas cry out.
“She’s with me!” Carmen called back over the sound of the little girl’s cries.
“What just happened?” A teen spoke up from somewhere in the room.
A hand smacked me in the face followed by a hushed sorry. Someone ran into me, almost causing me to trip over a chair.
I lifted my hand in front of my face but could not see it.
“Everyone, stay put!” Elizabeth yelled.
I could hear her shuffling around inside a drawer.
Suddenly, a small strike followed by a little flame allowed a little light.
Elizabeth reached for a lamp that was sitting on a shelf.
She promptly lit the lamp, then shook out the match, setting our only source of light on the desk.
The small fire cast a hazy orange glow on everyone’s faces.
“What happened?” A junior higher tried to get closer to the light as if it would protect him.
“I think the electricity went out.” Thomas walked over to the light switch and flipped it multiple times but to no avail.
“And of course, we were in the only room with no windows,” Enoch rolled his eyes.
“But why did we lose electricity?” I asked.
“Maybe 'cause there’s no one to operate it.”
The comment left us stunned.
“Wait,” Hunter spoke up. “If we lost electricity, we might lose the water."
We looked at each other in shock.
“Elizabeth,” I took charge once again. “Go fill up as many pans as you can. I’m going to plug the bathtub and see if I can get it filled.” I turned to the group as Elizabeth rushed out of the office. “Everyone else, let’s relocate to the living room and figure out our next step from there.”
I was about to run down the hall but stopped once I noticed Thomas looking at me weirdly.
“What?” I asked him.
He shook his head. “Do you feel ok?”
I stepped forward to see him better in the dim light. “Yes. I’m fine.”
Thomas shrugged. “Never mind.” He walked out to the living room with the rest of the teens.
I rolled my eyes. Boys.
