Enoch Flair: hidden

The light entered the room in streaks caused by the partially opened window, illuminating the bodies of teenage boys scattered throughout the living room.
I was surprised I was able to sleep at all with this nightmare we were living in.
Laughter carried across the room from the kitchen where the majority of the girls were congregating.
At least someone was able to laugh at a time like this.
I pushed myself up and out of my sleeping bag, reaching for the curtain. Opening it wider, I noticed that nothing outside had moved.
Maybe we really were the only people on earth.
Impossible, I reminded myself to think rationally.
“Ugh. Turn off the sun,” one of the boys moaned, rolling over.
I stepped over him and walked into the kitchen where some of the girls were preparing a makeshift breakfast.
“Good morning, Enoch! Sleep well?” Noel asked me, cracking eggs over a frying pad.
“Did anyone?” I grunted then sat down on a stool, observing the girls.
Multiple were sitting at the table doing each other’s hair and chatting away as if this were all just a sleepover instead of a nightmare coming to life.
Thomas entered the kitchen flanked by Hunter and took a seat next to me.
“Good morning!” a couple of the girls welcomed them but got are-you-serious faces in reply.
“Ok, yeash.” The girls returned to their own private conversations, excluding us.
Within a couple of minutes, breakfast was fully prepared with enough food to feed an army. Or a youth group.
“Can one of you guys go wake up the rest of the boys?” Noel asked politely.
I stood up calmly and walked back into the living room where bodies still slumbered peacefully.
“Wake up, guys.” I clapped my hands, lightly kicking the boy next to me.
“Go away!” one protested.
“Stop being my dad,” another grunted.
As soon as I heard that comment, I slammed my fist against the wall causing multiple boys to jump, startled.
“Get up this instant,” I commanded, then turned sharply and walked back into the kitchen, soon followed by a parade of boys.
Their eyes immediately lit up at the sight of the food, pushing each other out of the way for the front of the line with newfound energy.
“Thanks,” Noel mouthed to me.
I nodded back.
Moments later, the teens had broken up into different groups, scattering themselves around the kitchen and dining room.
“So, what are we supposed to do now?” Noel asked the group that sat around the dining table.
I paused for a moment to take in Noel, probably for the first time in my life.
She was sixteen but acted a lot older than that. She had blonde hair that fell around her shoulders. She acted and talked in such a way that showed everyone she was confident with herself.
“Well, we need to find where all the adults went,” Thomas spoke up from his seat beside Noel.
He was most likely one of the tallest members of the youth group; his tall frame held up comfortable clothing, letting others know he did not care much for his appearance. I think he was seventeen, but I am unsure since I have not had a real conversation with him in years.
“And how are we supposed to do that?” Hunter challenged from the other end of the table. As far as he could be from Elizabeth.
Hunter was smaller than most guys his age, but what he lacked in height, he made up for in spunk. His dark hair fell over his ears and curled slightly at the ends. Hunter slouched over in his chair, looking every way but at Elizabeth.
“Thomas, may I see your Pendant?” Elizabeth asked.
He slipped the Pendant off his neck and handed it to her.
“Don’t say anything when that is not around your neck. I don’t want to know what you will say.” Hunter joked with Thomas.
Elizabeth held the Pendant carefully in her hands, inspecting it from all angles. Her long brown hair fell in front of her, blocking her vision until she pushed it behind her ears. Elizabeth was not the very outgoing type like Noel, but she was not afraid to speak her opinion. Especially when it came to Hunter.
Then there was me. The only black kid in the youth group. I was also older than everyone. In age and maturity.
“Guys!” Elizabeth practically jumped up from her seat. “I finally remember where I’ve seen this before.” She handed the Pendant back to Thomas who slipped his head through the loop.
“Where?” Noel encouraged her.
Elizabeth looked around at the five of us.
“There’s one in my family’s attic.”
