Enoch Flair: protecting

“One. Two. Three. Four. I declare a thumb war.”
Byrant and Josiah pulled and tugged on each other, shaking the van in their attempts to pin down the other’s thumb.
Of course, I would get stuck with the junior highers.
“Knock it off!” I yelled back at them, not taking my eyes off of the road.
They quieted down but continued to attack each other.
“I’m serious, guys!” I threatened. “When are you all finally going to understand that this isn’t a playdate?” I pounded on the wheel.
“But it isn’t real.” Glenn leaned forward from his seat in the back. “It’s just a dream. That’s the only explanation.”
Byrant and Josiah postponed their thumb war.
“Yeah,” Byrant spoke quietly. “And maybe if it is real, I think dying would be better than this.”
The others nodded their agreement.
The car fell into a hushed silence.
My Pendant hung against my chest, making my neck feel heavier.
And I do not think it was from the weight.
Why was I the one chosen to protect them? And what was I supposed to protect them from?
The Defendant?
Whoever took our parents?
Themselves?
At that moment, I made a decision. Whatever this is, I am willing to protect these teens with whatever it takes. Even if it means my life.
But that meant I needed to prepare myself.
I pulled off the route to the airport, deciding to make a quick detour.
Minutes later, I pulled into my own driveway with the other two cars directly behind me.
“You guys stay put. And I mean it!” I instructed the junior highers.
They nodded their understanding and then began planning a thumb war championship.
I hopped out of the front seat and ran towards my house, motioning to the other vehicles that I would just be a minute.
Time to prepare for what is to come.
