The teens started to scream in delight. Multiple girls were jumping up and down in delight.
The door opened and slammed shut, announcing the return of Enoch and Noel.
I ran to them, preparing to congratulate Enoch but stopped in my tracks as I noticed their panting.
“Lock all the windows!” Enoch commanded, turning around to lock the door he had just entered through.
“Everyone to the basement!” Noel stepped into the living room, frantically corralling the group to the stairs.
“What is going on?” I followed her, dodging out of Enoch’s way as he scrambled around the house, locking windows and shutting curtains in haste.
“No time! We’ve got to get everyone safely in the basement. I’ll explain there!” Noel yelled over her shoulder as she led the teens downstairs.
I took the back of the group funneling down the stairs, skipping the last two steps.
Thomas had already begun to move boxes against the wall, opening up a space large enough for everyone to sit in a large circle.
The rough concrete was cool against my legs as I took my seat in between Thomas and Jack.
Elizabeth set the lamp in the middle of the forming circle and then took her place directly across from me.
The light from the lamp created orange highlights in her hair.
She looked up and saw me watching her. I sent her a small smile, but she turned away, ignoring me.
Enoch thundered down the stairs, looking back up to confirm the door was locked. He remained at the bottom step instead of taking the open seat in the circle.
“So, is someone going to explain what is going on?” Thomas turned from Noel to Enoch then back again.
“We were attacked,” Noel answered quickly.
A couple of teens gasped.
“By what?” A chill went down my spine.
“A robot of some sort. It kept screaming ‘defend’.” Enoch crossed his arms at his post, looking as if he were a bodyguard.
“But what was it defending?” Elizabeth had a look of terror on her face.
Noel mirrored her look. “I don’t know. But I am sure these ‘Defendants’,” she made air quotes with her figures. “aren’t on our side.”
“So, let me get this right,” I spoke loud enough for everyone to hear. “We are in a world without any humans but us. The only clue we have is a Pendant that used to belong to Elizabeth’s grandfather. Plus, maybe a diary, but for all we know it could be speaking gibberish. And now, there is a robot out there that is attacking us, saying it is trying to defend something.”
The group looked around at each other.
No one corrects me.
I ran my hands through my hair. “This is unreal.”
