I turned the lamp on in the kitchen to find Noel sitting at the island, inspecting her Pendant.
She jumped up, spooked by the sudden change in light.
“Oh, sorry,” I apologized quickly. “I didn’t know anyone else was up.”
I started to turn back around and head to the living room.
“That’s ok. I don’t mind.” She sat back down, letting the Pendant fall against her chest.
I shrugged, then walked over to the faucet and poured a drink.
In one step, I crossed the kitchen and slid into the seat next to her.
“This is scary, huh?” I sighed.
“Yeah.” She propped herself up on her elbows. “Especially knowing I’m supposed to lead them.” She motioned to some of the boys whose snores could be heard from the living room.
I looked at her. “I will help you. We all will. You of all people would be the best leader. You won’t let us down.”
Suddenly, the flashing lights returned, blinding me. But this time, they were circling me, not Noel.
