Small feet padded on the roof, sitting down beside me.
I didn’t have to look to know who it was.
“They are counting on us.” Noel mirrored my thoughts. “It’s exhausting.”
I snorted. “Yeah.”
“We have to make it through this. For them.”
I looked over the teens again, watching their bodies rise and fall with deep breaths. They probably felt the most peaceful they have felt all week. “How do we know we aren’t being delusional about the Eiffel Tower?”
“We don’t. But it’s the only lead we have,” she responded.
I didn’t nod, but I did agree.
Maybe it was a long shot, but it’s all we had.
“What do you think will be there?” I took a deep breath. “What do you want to be there?” I rephrased my question.
“An answer.”
She didn’t need to say anymore. I understood.
Noel stayed on top of the bus a few minutes longer before climbing back down and joining the sleeping teens, soon becoming a part of the same peaceful darkness they were in.
I refused to fall asleep.
I was deemed their Protector.
So that’s what I was going to do.
