As if on cue, everyone dropped their conversations and began applauding the older boy, giving out high-fives.
Jack stood up and sat next to James, inspecting his Pendant. “It’s a paintbrush,” he announced to the bus once we quieted down.
That means now over half of the group had been given their Flairs.
And I am one of those remaining seven.
Thirsty, I reached my hand into the bag at my feet, careful not to kick Thomas who was sitting beside me in a conversation with Noel.
The back of my hand brushed against a smooth paper. Pulling it out, I remember the stack of envelopes I had stashed in my bag.
Ended with his conversation, Thomas turned back to me, spotting the envelopes before I could re-hide them.
That is what you took from Elizabeth’s and Glenn’s attic, right?”
I nodded, shoving the stack back into my bag.
“You know that is called stealing, right?” He raised his eyebrows as if trying to decide if he wanted to start a fight with me.
“It’s not stealing,” I promptly replied. “I’m going to give it back.”
Thomas took a deep breath before continuing. “So, you are borrowing without permission? That is the literal definition of stealing!”
“It’s not stealing!” I raised my voice. Multiple teens near us glanced behind them to see what the fight was about. I lowered my voice as they looked away. “It’s not stealing,” I repeated. “Trust me.”
Thomas sighed. “How are we supposed to do this if we are keeping secrets from each other?”
“Do what exactly? What are we trying to do?” I challenged him.
He shrugged calmly. Survive.”
I gritted my teeth as I turned to the window, resting my head on the glass. My head bounced with the sway of the bus. “I’m starting to think it wouldn’t be the worst thing to fail at.”
