“Hunter! Can you give me a hand with these drinks?” my dad called from upstairs.
“Sure!” I yelled back then took the stairs up two at a time.
Dad handed me a pitcher of lemonade and a stack of cups.
“Take these outside and set them on the table,” he instructed me.
Juggling the two, I opened the door and wobbled to the table. As I am setting them down, cars started to pull into the driveway.
“Dad! They’re here!” I called inside.
Glenn and Elizabeth climbed out of the first vehicle. They walked over to me as my dad went to talk to the driver.
“What’s up?” I welcomed them. Or at least Glenn. Elizabeth did not acknowledge my existence. Nor did I acknowledge her.
Enoch exited the second car.
“Is David here, yet?” he asked as he walked up to us.
“Not yet. Just us,” I replied.
Another vehicle pulled in with two more in tow.
Within minutes, the yard was full of different groups of people.
I took a step back to observe them all.
Over on the porch is the prominent girl group. Led by Noel, no doubt. Most likely talking about fashion. Or boys. Or both.
Surrounding the campfire is the older boy group. The topic of choice- guns. The leader of the group identified by his loud laugh and relaxed demeanor being none other than Enoch himself.
And last and most definitely least is the junior high group. Their location of desire is near the food, where they can ruin it with one of their overly-used pranks. There is no leader for this group. They play the every-man-for-himself game.
Then there is Thomas. He just does not fit in with any group. I do not think he cares though. He is perfectly fine observing everyone from a distance. As long as he has a plate of food.
Suddenly Thomas stood up and looked around frantically.
“Lost something, Thomas?” I called out to him.
“Sparrow! I lost Sparrow!” he started to run around looking under chairs and tables.
“What is Sparrow supposed to be doing here?” I yelled at him, attracting the attention of the other teens.
“Both of my parents had to work tonight, so I was supposed to watch her!” he answered, still checking around the lawn.
“Thomas!” Noel called from the porch. “Check inside! We’ll search out here. I’ll check the road!”
Thomas ran inside while the rest of us fanned out, looking for the little four-year-old.
“Sparrow!” teens started to call out.
“Bribe her with some cookies,” one of the junior higher suggested.
“Actually, probably not the cookies,” another junior higher snickered. “You don’t want to know what I did to those."
I rolled my eyes at them knowing it is a lost cause.
I ran around to the back of the house.
“Sparrow!” I cupped my hands around my mouth.
Then I felt the Glitch.
