Leaning against the bus, I watched the teens from a distance.
The girls had taken the blankets and begun laying them out in a circle, with an empty area in the center for a fire.
Some boys had split off in pairs looking for dry sticks from the edge of the forest, while others stood around awkwardly.
Closing my eyes for a second, I felt a sharp pain in my hand. I looked down and noticed that I had been gripping my Pendant absentmindedly. Blood slowly trickled around my figure where the edge of the medallion had cut into my skin.
I watched the thin trail of dark blood grow longer before a drip fell onto the dewy grass.
A thought came into my mind as I watched the blood.
If I were dead, I would not have to endure this any longer.
Then Sparrow’s laugh floated to me through the growing mist where she sat on a blanket playing a hand game with Carmen, with her unicorn sitting beside her.
Then I realized why I have decided to stay alive during the nightmare.
I push off the bus and walked soberly toward the circle, sitting down next to Hunter.
I will stay alive for Sparrow.
