I took a deep breath. I was going to tell them about what life is for me. Never thought I would do this, but I trust this group, just because of everything we have been through.
“Yeah,” I began, not knowing where to start. “My dad passed away a long time ago. Since then, it has just been my mom, Sparrow, and me. Mom works two part-time jobs while simultaneously searching for a full-time job.”
The teens were absolutely silent around me. The only sound we heard came from the snaps of the firewood.
“We can barely afford the house bill and groceries. The car breaks down more than it runs. The dishwasher never seems to work properly. Expenses just seem to build up.” I stretched out my knees, letting my feet warm up closer to the fire. “But we were a family.” I look at Sparrow, who was oblivious to everything going on around her with complete focus on her unicorn.
My eyes locked with Noel’s over the fire.
She gave me a small smile, pity in her eyes.
Everyone else was mirroring her pity.
But I did not tell them to have their sympathy. I told them so they could understand me.
