I did a mental head count, confirming the presence of all fifteen before sitting down on a blanket with my back toward the bus so I could face the woods.
Breathing softly, I watched calmly as James and Jack built a fire, using the collection of branches the other boys had stacked on a blanket.
Starting with the dry leaves, they used a match from my bag to start the fire. They held the match under the leaves before the yellow flame jumped to the leaves.
One by one, the fire overcame the leaves as their edges began to curl inward and as their color turned to a scorched black.
James grabbed a small twig from the stack next to him and leaned it over the fire. Grabbing more, he began to build a miniature triangle above the leaves.
The fire reached upwards, grasping at the twigs.
The loose strings of bark began to turn brighter shades before curling into the twig.
The fire did not hesitate to find its new home on the branches as it grew bigger, brighter, and stronger.
Grabbing the bigger pieces of wood, Jack placed two logs on the fire.
The logs were harder to conquer, but the fire continuously lapped at the bark, till it was able to spread to the bigger pieces.
Within moments, the logs had given in to the overwhelming pressure of the red flames.
James and Jack sat back on the blanket; job well done.
But they had no idea that it was hurting me inside.
