“Turn left up here.” Elizabeth pointed down a street as Enoch turned the wheel.
I looked behind us to confirm the other two cars in tow.
Enoch and Elizabeth sat up front as she instructed him on the route to her house.
Thomas and Noel sat in the back of the van, hunched over in a private conversation while comparing their Pendants.
I sat in the middle next to Sparrow who was clutching her arms close to her as if she were cold. She sat securely in a car seat one of the girls had prepared for her.
Gazing out the window at the scenery whizzing by, I noticed the stillness of it all. The trees swayed peacefully in the wind, but no other movement could be found.
Suddenly, Enoch slammed on the brakes, causing the wheels to screech against the pavement.
The two cars following us came to an abrupt halt beside our vehicle.
Everyone in the van became dead silent as we looked at the purpose of the stop.
Climbing out of the vehicles, we regrouped with the other teens. No one said a word.
Two cars had slammed head-on into each other, with glass and metal shards lying next to them, blocking the road. The wreck was devastating. No one could have survived that collision.
To my horror, I noticed another vehicle that had run off the road; its bumper was sticking up at an awkward angle.
Another car was next to it in the ditch. This one was lying on its top with only three wheels still attached.
Enoch took cautious steps toward the two collided cars, looking in through the windows.
“There’s no one here!” he called to us, the first words spoken since we came upon this disaster.
David and James ran down the ditch to inspect the other vehicles, but soon turned around, motioning they had come to the same conclusions.
But people would not just leave the crash site.
Unless they had no choice.
The older boys started corralling everyone back into their cars and away from the horrifying site.
My vehicle’s riders returned to their original seating arrangements, but the conversations did not pick back up.
Enoch motioned for the other drivers to follow him as he navigated his way through the wreckage. He drove off the side of the road and around the two smashed cars, careful not to roll into the ditch and join the other unlucky vehicles.
I turned away from the disturbing site and watched Sparrow, but what I saw with her made me want to turn back toward the wreck and try to permanently erase her image from my mind.
Clutching her arms tightly to her chest, a single tear fell down the chubby girl’s cheek.397Please respect copyright.PENANAo1mcO9dYLc
