Elizabeth and Glenn led the group into the house, finding it vacant, just like everything else.
“Come on,” Glenn motioned for the teens to follow him upstairs. “The attic entrance is this way.”
I dropped back from the stampeding group, taking in the house.
It was definitely smaller than mine with modest furniture against the walls. With little to no decorations, the rooms lacked the natural home feel.
“Wow,” I whispered as I spun in a small circle. I realized this was the first time I had been at their house after the Situation. “Elizabeth, I am so sorry-”
“Don’t.” She held up a hand to cut me off. “I don’t need your pity.”
I swallowed hard. “Did he really take everything with him?”
“I said stop!” She took a step closer. “Don’t meddle in things that aren’t your business. Just leave it.”
“Fine.” I took a step back, holding up my hands in an “I surrender” motion.
That satisfied her enough. She walked up the stairs to join the others.
I turned back around to look at the almost empty living room. The pictures of her family had been taken off the walls, leaving them a boring beige.
If I had known that it was this bad, I would not have said the things that I did.
If I had known what Elizabeth went through, I would have acted differently.
Here we were, in the midst of a living nightmare, and both of us were holding onto something stupid.
And we were letting it divide us.
I doubt that she and I would ever return to what we used to be, but I sure did not like where we were now.
Taking a deep breath, I vowed to myself that from now on, I would treat her how I used to.
I will try to forget the past for the sake of the youth group.
I will not like it, but I will do it.506Please respect copyright.PENANAbFsl4Vli0r
