Elizabeth Flair: hidden

With Noel and Enoch settled into their respective vehicles, we were back on the road.
“Fifteen minutes,” James announced to the rest of the van.
Our parade of vehicles navigated the road, slowly dodging around other stationary cars that littered the road.
Occasionally, we would come across wrecked cars, which would always kill any conversation in the van.
This could not be real. People cannot just disappear. This is a dream.
A dream that felt realistic.
Suddenly, something dug into my hip.
Reaching into my back pocket, I remembered the object I had found in the tunnel.
Catching the cool metal with my fingers, I brought it out of my pocket and held it in front of me.
A long, silver chain hung below my hand as a charm lay in my palm.
I tilted my hand to see the charm better in the moonlight.
A lion was frozen mid-stride, with emeralds for eyes.
I smiled to myself. My dad had given this to me on my tenth birthday.
“Elizabeth,” Hunter gasped from his seat beside me. “Your necklace.”
My fist automatically closed over the charm.
“I thought you lost it.”
I swallowed then turned to the window, refusing to look at him. “Yeah. Me too.”
Reaching around my neck, I secured the clasp, then dropped the charm under my shirt, hiding it.
With my necklace back around my neck, I felt more at peace than I have in a long time.
“We are here,” James announced to the passengers. “Time to see if David really can fly one of these things.”
