“So, Noel said that everyone needs to get their own bag and fill it with the things you will need,” I said loud enough so all the boys in the gift shop could hear me.
“Oh cool!” one of the junior highers exclaimed from amidst the shelves of trinkets. “Look at this snow globe!”
I identified the voice as Josiah.
“Will this break if I throw it at Byrant’s head?” Josiah tossed the snow globe up and down in his hand as if he was planning something.
“Maybe,” Levi encouraged him. “Put it in your bag and test your theory on the plane.”
Josiah nodded. “Good thinking.” He buried the globe into a backpack he had found.
I walked over to him. “And when she said things you will need, she meant food and water.” I reached into his bad and pulled out the globe, carefully setting if back on the shelf.
Rolling my eyes, I turned and walked away to find my own bag.
“Doesn’t matter.” I heard Josiah perk up. “I can still test my theory with a rock.
I stifled my laughter as I grabbed a drawstring backpack off a hanger.
Approving my choice of a bag, I followed Josiah out of the gift show and into a snack shop where Levi and Glenn were in a deep conversation.
“Does this feel real to you?” I heard Glenn ask Josiah and Levi as I tossed a packet of beef jerky into my bag.
Josiah punched Levi in the shoulder.
“Ow!” Levi rubbed his arm. “What was that for?”
“Yup!” Josiah turned back to Glenn. “Feels real to me.” Josiah smiled brightly. “I have always wanted to do that to someone.”
Glenn didn’t even smile. “But how could this be happening? I mean, everyone’s gone. And now this thing with Flairs? How come only a few people have them? And what does it mean?”
Levi did not make a noise.
Josiah shrugged. “It could be a lot worse.”
Everyone in the room turned to Josiah as if he was crazy.
“Think about it.” He pointed around him as he spoke. “We have access to food and water. We have some sort of clue as to a way to get out of this. And honestly, we would be in a pickle if David didn’t know how to fly. And look, the airport has some sort of electric generators so at lease we are able to see each other.”
The boys looked around as if no one had noticed the presence of electricity in the terminal.
“Plus,” Josiah continued. “At lease we all aren’t on our own. We’ve got each other. That’s the most important thing, right?”
Josiah suddenly disappeared in a swarm of shinning lights.
I smiled for him, knowing what was coming next.
