“Welcome aboard! I hope you enjoy the flight. Thank you for choosing David’s Airlines.” I mockingly shook hands with the teens as they climbed the steps that led them into the jet.
I specifically choose this plane because it was spacious and comfortable for our group of teens and because it will also hold enough gas to at least get us to Bilbao, Spain from where we will refill and fly to Paris.
I felt a tug on my arm. Danielle pulled me away from the others and under the shelter of the wing.
“Are you sure about this?” She wrung her hands in front of her.
I looked down at my younger sister. Only two years younger than me, she was in between Josiah and I. With her long, jet-black hair and slitted eyes, she and I resembled our Asian father while Josiah took after our Russian mom.
“Of course, I am sure about this, I smiled at her.
“But you could crash and we could all die.” She pressed her lips together.
I had forgotten about her fear of flying.
“Is dying really the worst thing that could happen right now?” Noticing that did not work, I tried a different tactic. “Look, they would not have given me a pilot’s license if I wasn’t able to fly planes right?”
She nodded.
“Good! So, you have nothing to worry about.” I shoved my hands in my pockets. “You can even sit in the cockpit with me if you want.”
“No!” She looked frightened. “I’ll sit with Rose.” She referred to her best friend.
“Ok.” I nodded. “Come on. They are waiting for us.”
She followed me back to the steps.
Danielle was facing her biggest fear.
And I know at some point along this journey, all of us will have to face our fears.
