I tried to slow my racing heart as I locked my eyes on the Defendant.
Clamping my hands into fists at my side, I rolled my shoulder and neck, feeling the fabric of the Pendant’s strap cut into my skin.
I did not dare turn my head, but I knew everyone was in their place.
The Defendant’s attention was set on me as it came closer.
Just as planned.
I held my hand up over my head, preparing to give my signal.
“Defend!” Its eerie scream sent a shiver down my back.
Not yet.
It was now withing fifty yards from my position.
Almost.
“Defend!”
Now.
I brought my hand down, signaling the other teens from their places.
The junior highers screamed as if they were going into a battle.
The Defendant slowed down, unaware of where to place his attention.
“The rope!” I yelled, running toward the Defendant.
Hunter and Thomas sprinted from their hiding positions to different sides of the Defendant, the rope held up between them.
Crossing in front of the Defendant, they trapped it in the rope.
Seeing their chance for glory, the junior highers stepped forward and began beating the robot with any stick or hard object they could find.
I blinked twice before confirming that Josiah was hitting the Defendant with a pink, laced purse he found on the ground nearby.
Hunter and Thomas continued to trap the robot creature with the rope till the Defendant had lost all use of its appendages.
“Stop!” I commanded to the junior highers.
They ceased beating the Defendant and stepped away from it.
Hunter and Thomas held the ropes taunt.
I stepped forward and kicked the Dependent on its chest causing it to fall backwards.
Stepping on top of it, I pinned it to the ground.
The Defendant’s eyes glowed bright green. Then suddenly they faded to red as he let out a scream, “You will never win!” Its body began to convulse. “You were never meant to win!”
The body stopped jerking and relaxed.
Then the red left the eyes, sending them to an empty black.
Everything was abruptly silent.
Of course, Josiah was the first to speak. “Well, that was intense. When’s lunch?”
