Enoch stepped away from the Defendant as Hunter and Thomas knotted the ropes. He motioned to Byrant. “Do your thing.”
Byrant rubbed his hands together in anticipation and stepped forward, preparing to dissect the robot.
“Ok…” I stood, trying to calm my adrenaline after the exciting event. “Now back to our original question, how do we get to Paris?”
“I vote we stay here,” Danielle spoke up from the back. “What if David comes back?”
I sighed. “Look, Danielle. I know you are worried about your brother, but we can’t stay put with those things about.” I motioned to where the Defendant lay.
“But how are we supposed to get to Paris without a pilot?” Thomas asked.
“Maybe Danielle is right.” Enoch gripped his gun strap. “Maybe we should rethink going to Paris.”
“What? No!” I threw my arms out. “We are already across the Atlantic. Paris is only six hundred miles away!”
“Actually, 597 miles,” Byrant spoke from his position over the Defendant.
“Whatever. My point is that we can still-” I cut myself off as something caught my eye. “Uh, Josiah? Why are you holding a pink purse?”
Josiah looked down at the small purse in his hand before giving off a big smile. “Ah. This old thing? It’s nothing. But thank you for noticing.” He swung it over his shoulder. “It goes with my eyes.”
I stifled a laugh for not wanting to encourage him.
“I wonder what is in it.” He opened the purse and pulled out an assortments of items. “Wallet. Gum. Pen. Why is everything pink? Oo! Car keys!” He held out the keys and suddenly pressed the alarm button.
A car’s alarm blared a couple hundred feet from our group.
“That’s it! We drive to Paris!” I exclaimed. “We can find other keys like that one. It would only take a day!”
“What about when they run out of gas?” Hunter questioned.
“Then we find another vehicle.” I shrugged.
The teens around me nodded, agreeing with my idea. Only Enoch was the one to seem in objection.
“Alright guys. I think I’ve figured it out.” Bryant moved a little bit away from the Defendant so we could see. “Right here is a receiver. This is how it gets all of its commands.?
“So, someone is commanding it?” I asked.
Byrant shrugged. “It appears so. Or it could just be preprogramed. This is the transmitter. Everything it hears and sees is sent to something. Its wiring is pretty simple. But I did find this.” He holds up something small that seemed to look like a thumb drive.
“What is it?”
“I don’t know. It may hold some information on how the Defendant is programmed to certain environments and circumstances. But it isn’t a normal thumb drive. It requires a unique reader. “
We all nodded, showing that we follow him.
“But this is what caught my attention.” He flipped the drive over in his palm, revealing an engraving in the grey plastic.
It was a circle with a small fire in the center.
The same symbol on the diary we found.
